Twinkies: The delicious, cream-filled, golden cake snack that could survive a nuclear holocaust (but not), apparently can't survive a massive bakery strike. Hostess announced today that it will go bankrupt and shut its doors, taking about a year to wind down.

While this news is devastating to snack lovers everywhere (and means a loss of thousands of jobs at Hostess bakeries across the country), Twinkies hold an important place in film lovers' hearts. It's even a case of life imitating art: Soon, we'll all be like Tallahassee in "Zombieland," just looking for Twinkies in a Twinkie-less world.

Below, enjoy our film clip eulogy to our favorite indestructible snack.

'Ghostbusters' (1984)

"Let's say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of psychokinetic energy in the New York City area." Yes, let's. From now on, let's all give "Ghostbusters" (and snack cakes) its due and measure our lives in terms of Twinkies.

'Die Hard' (1988)

"What's in these things, anyway?" A question many have asked, then decided they'd rather not know the answer to. "Die Hard" dares to go there.

'The Iron Giant' (1999) 

Twinkies feature prominently in the animated sci-fi flick, like in this clip, where Hogarth attempts to improve upon perfection by adding more cream filling.

'Van Wilder' (2002)

This is one treat you never want to eat. Who can forget the clinical precision with which Van Wilder (Ryan Reynolds) adds his own special doggy-style cream filling to a pile of Twinkies?

'The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift' (2006) 

Who could forget pint-sized rapper Lil Bow-Wow's star turn as Twinkie in the nth installment of the drag-racing series? Um, not us!

'WALL-E' (2008)

Pixar's post-apocalyptic/sad robot love story winks in the direction of the rumor that Twinkies are indestructible: Cockroaches and Twinkies are among the only recognizable survivors in WALL-E's garbage lair in the year 2085.

'Zombieland' (2009)

All he wants is vengeance... and Twinkies. Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) has had everything precious taken from him by the zombie apocalypse, but he'll be damned if his favorite snack is taken too. Traveling across the country busting undead heads, he also hunts for Twinkies.

'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' (2011) 

Although Shia LaBeouf wasn't spotted eating one of the now-doomed snacks in the film itself, Hostess did have a highly visible (and highly hilarious) tie-in campaign with the movie's release. Behold, Chocwave cupcakes and Snoballimus Prime Snoballs!

Universal]]> This adaptation of Elmore Leonard's book had Steven Soderbergh as a commercial director and George Clooney as a formidable star, but Lopez was the sexiest screen attraction. As U.S. Marshal Karen Sisco, she's good with a shotgun, but comes down with a serious case of Stockholm Syndrome after a cozy ride in a car trunk with Clooney's bank robber.

Universal]]> The cute redhead gets an "Easy A" on her marksmanship, taking out one zombie after another in this post-apocalyptic comedy. This summer she needs Peter Parker to come to her rescue, but back in the day all she needed was a pump-action shotgun to get the job done.

Director James Cameron amped up Ripley's heroism without sacrificing her protective feminine nature, and Weater snagged an unprecedented Oscar nomination for a sci-fi fantasy role.

Jovovich would not only get to play video game heroine Alice in a neverending parade of sequels, but also snagged a husband and muse in the form of director Paul W.S. Anderson.

Screen Gems]]> The British beauty that brings the "sex" to sexagenarian got to show what she was made of as a retired Black Ops assassin opposite Bruce Willis in this high-octane comic book adaptation. She takes down a slew of bodyguards with a Heckler & Koch MP5K submachine gun, all before her afternoon tea.

Summit]]> Being an amputee stripper may seem like a handicap, but in the sordid mind of auteur extraordinaire Robert Rodriguez, it's just an opportunity for an upgrade. McGowan's Cherry Darling brandishes a M4 Carbine with a M203 grenade launcher attachment in place of her wooden leg and uses it to wipe out a whole army of zombies single, uh, leggedly.

Dimension Films]]> Kunis is "That '70s Gunslinger" in this overblown video game adaptation. To play her Russian assassin character Mona Sax, she learned how to disassemble and rebuild an MP5K blindfolded. This screen beauty must have shared good chemistry with costar Mark Wahlberg since they'll reteam this summer for the filthy teddy bear comedy "Ted."

20th Century Fox]]> How the daughter of one of the fugliest movie directors of all time, Dario Argento, turned out to be one of the most sizzling hot Italians in the world is beyond us, but we loved her as the pistol-packin' paramour of Vin Diesel's extreme sports spy Xander Cage.

For over 25 years, Woody Harrelson has entertained us with a wide array of characters ranging from psychopaths to lovable losers. This year alone we've seen him in two very different parts: a wickedly corrupt L.A. cop in "Rampart" and a Republican party strategist in "Game Change." His latest role -- sure to be one of his more colorful -- is Haymitch Abernathy, the drunken mentor of Katniss in "The Hunger Games."

To celebrate his versatility, we look back at Harrelson’s nine best performances in what has become an impressive career.

9. 'A Scanner Darkly' (2006)

"The Hunger Games" isn’t the first time Harrelson has worked with existing material. In Richard Linklater’s adaptation of the classic Philip K. Dick sci-fi thriller, Harrelson plays Ernie Luckman, the mellow yet extremely paranoid member of a group of drug addicts that have an undercover cop in their midst. Starring opposite Robert Downey Jr., Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder, a laid-back Harrelson blends in perfectly with the ensemble. Watch here.

8. 'Indecent Proposal' (1993)

He honed his comedic chops on TV (spending eight years on "Cheers") and supporting roles in movies, but Harrelson got his first taste of dramatic work when he costarred opposite Demi Moore and Robert Redford in this sexually charged drama from the director of "Fatal Attraction," Adrian Lyne. Harrelson plays a husband who, while dealing with financial hardship, agrees to let a sly billionaire (Redford) spend the night with his wife (Moore) for a million dollars, then mentally falls apart afterwards. 7. 'Zombieland' (2009)

After years of doing small indies or taking bit parts in larger movies, Harrelson finally signed on for a legitimate lead role. And seriously, could anyone else have starred as Tallahassee? In this zombie-infested post-apocalyptic comedy he plays the trigger-happy good ol' boy to perfection. And it takes talent when you’re a devout vegan but can believably play someone who craves Twinkies. Watch here.

6. 'No Country for Old Men' (2007)

In a film filled with so many outstanding performances, Harrelson's is often forgotten. But his scene opposite Javier Bardem is chilling -- his character, Carson Wells, a bounty hunter hired to hunt down Chigurh (Bardem), suddenly becomes the hunted. Just look at Harrelson’s face when he sits in the room with Bardem. He knows it's bye-bye time. Watch here.

5. 'White Men Can't Jump' (1992)

There's just something about Harrelson teaming with Wesley Snipes that puts a smile on our faces (but we won’t talk about "Money Train"). In this comedy set on the basketball courts of Venice, California, Harrelson and Snipes play a pair of hustlers who use the stereotypes of white players to make money. Harrelson showed he got game; the film's basketball coach, NBA Hall of Famer Bob Lanier, admitted during shooting that both he and Snipes had reached a college basketball Division III skill level. Though their believability as ballers is impressive, what makes the film is Harrelson's ability to keep up with Snipes’ motor mouth. Watch here.

4. 'Kingpin' (1996)

"Zombieland" wasn't the only time Harrelson starred opposite Bill Murray. The first time was in this Farrelly brothers cult classic. Harrelson plays a former bowling prodigy who looses his hand after hustling with another pro, "Big Ern" (Murray). Having played the pretty boy for most of his career, Harrelson abandoned his typical persona for comedy, playing an overweight slob with a horrible combover and hook on one hand. 3. 'The Messenger' (2009)

Before "Rampart," Harrelson and writer-director Oren Moverman teamed for a harrowing look at a soldier's return from combat and his new responsibility. Harrelson earned an Oscar nomination for his gripping supporting performance as a casualty notification officer responsible for instructing his newest member (Ben Foster) on how to deliver the news of a soldier's death to their next of kin. When he falls off the wagon at the end of the movie, the vulnerability of this hardass superior officer is revealed, leading to the film's most touching moment. Watch here.

2. 'The People vs. Larry Flynt' (1996)

His Oscar-nominated performance as the controversial Hustler publisher Larry Flynt was a landmark in Harrelson's career. Embodying Flynt physically and vocally, Harrelson was at the peak of his talents (and popularity) and surprised many in the industry who just thought of him as a fun-loving hippie. Though the film covered serious material, it's Harrelson's comic timing that lightens the hardships in Flynt's life. Watch here.

1. 'Natural Born Killers' (1994)

Oliver Stone's highly controversial, ultra-violent love fable starred Harrelson and Juliette Lewis as a pair of psychopathic murders on a nationwide killing spree for the heck of it. Sporting a shaved head and Coke-bottle sunglasses for the film's poster, Harrelson quickly became a lightning rod for criticism about violence in movies. Like it or not, the dark role would epitomize his no-fear attitude towards playing difficult characters. Watch here.

Dimension]]> This model turned actress has made a career of looking hot and glamorous while single-handedly butchering thousands upon thousands of people and zombies in a variety of dystopian futures and historical slaughterhouses ('The Fifth Element', 'Utraviolet', 'The Messenger'). Mass murder has never been so pret-a-porter.

Screen Gems]]> Since "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," Jolie has been playing action stars with a grace and intensity no other actress in Hollywood can touch. But in "Wanted," she takes it to a whole next level, contorting her body and bending her gunshots in superhuman feats of dexterity that blow away the competition.

Universal]]> When Ripley (Weaver) and her fellow intergalactic truck drivers pick up exactly the kind of hitchhiker your parents always warned you about (double mouth full of fangs, razor tail, bleeds acid, etc.) only she and her gnarly '80s perm are a match for movie history's rudest, extraterrestrial freeloader.

20th Century Fox]]> Some actresses look sexy doing anything. And this campy Western's main appeal is that it happens to have two of them (Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek) running around Mexico in bustiers and bullet belts. Cruz plays a noble bank robber with an itchy trigger finger... and a way of making one forget what else happens in the movie.

20th Century Fox]]> Keanu Reeves might be "The One" in this sci-fi mind-bender. But it's Trinity (Moss), the super-slick virtual operative in black, who steals the show by running on walls while armed to the teeth, or suspending herself in midair for dramatic effect before kicking some lowly mortal clear across the room.

Warner Bros.]]> Sarah Connor (Hamilton) left all previous female action stars in the dust when she teamed up with the robot assassin known as The Terminator (who strongly resembled former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger) and then birthed the future savior of the world. Hard to beat that.

TriStar]]> When Mike Myers needed a British bird who would embody all the shagadelic attributes of 60's-era spy babes, there was really only one choice: Hurley. On a side note, female secret agents aren't wearing nearly enough silver go-go outfits these days.

New Line]]> There's something about how Fonda looked completely awkward holding a ridiculous, futuristic laser that, in its own way, is sexy -- or at least really cute. On an epic quest to save the galaxy from evil in the year 40,000, Barbarella manages to outlast an orgasm machine, survive killer birds and lose her clothes with alarming regularity.

Paramount]]> Jinx's (Berry) bikini-clad entrance pays homage to -- and just might upstage -- Ursula Andress' classic ocean emersion from 1962's "Dr. No." But Berry doesn't just look amazing: She can also hold her own next to James Bond, taking out super villains like only the sexiest of spies can (It's a scientific fact that a spy's deadliness is in equal proportion to his/her sexiness).

Using her younger sister to tug on her mark's heartstrings, this gun-toting con artist adapts to a rapidly changing world economy, where, if you don't use your brain, the zombies will.

This week sees the release of "Paul," Simon Pegg & Nick Frost's outrageous comic road movie where they play two British sci-fi nerds in America who help a rowdy alien (Seth Rogen) get back to his home planet. Over the course of their journey they inevitably get their minds blown in many ways, although Paul's love of super-strong Mary Jane is definitely involved at one point.

Since Jack Kerouac first put pedal to the literary metal, the horizon-expanding aspect of a road trip seems intrinsically linked with a factor of trippiness, and thus we chose the nine greatest movies that indulge in a bizarre, crazy, and surreal atmosphere. Dig it, man!

9. 'The Hangover' (2009)

The equation is simple: 4 dudes + a night of extreme Vegas boozing = 3 dudes. When the self-proclaimed Wolf Pack of four guys celebrating their friend's bachelor party cannot recall the debauchery of the night before, and wake up to a hotel room filled with odd artifacts of their Sin City fun (a baby, a hospital bracelet, tiger, etc), they have to pull together what little is left of their braincells to find the groom before he's late to the altar. Todd Phillips took a trio of talented but less-than-household names (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis) and made the most-successful R-rated comedy of all time, with a little punching up from Mike Tyson. Iron Mike doesn't like to lose.

8. 'Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome' (1985)

George Miller's previous two chapters in his Mad Max oeuvre were already pretty nuts, a strange amalgam of American International biker gang movies, Akira Kurosawa samurai films, and Joseph Campbell hero mythology, mixed with S&M leather and an Outback flavor. This third entry in the trilogy gave a nitro-boost to weirdness, though, with next-level stuff like a barter city powered by pig excrement, Tina Turner's wiggity-whack hairstyle, and a gravity-defying battle to-the-death with a down syndrome giant inside the title arena. Mel Gibson's rugged intensity is personified in this, his most iconic character, and now that we're living in the era of CGI cars and "digital doubles," it's refreshing to see old school car chases with real blokes risking their bollocks for our amusement.

7. 'Wristcutters: A Love Story' (2006)

After unceremoniously offing himself, Zia (nearly famous "Almost Famous" star Patrick Fugit) finds himself trapped in a limboland populated entirely with suicides. The world is strange only for how utterly mundanely alike it is to our own, except that no one can smile and if you shot yourself on Earth you may still have a bullet hole in your head kinda deal. When Zia discovers his girlfriend (Leslie Bibb) took her own life shortly after he did, he sets off on a cross-country… er, cross-purgatory road trip to find her. With his edgy Russian rocker friend Eugene (Shea Whigham) and a pixie-ish hitchhiker (Shannyn Sossamon), they encounter a strange cult of miracle worshippers led by none other than Tom Waits.

Trippiest Moment: A vortex to another dimension is discovered under the passenger-side seat.

6. 'Natural Born Killers' (1994)

Oliver Stone's ultraviolent indictment of mass-media brainwashing concerns two homicidal psychopaths named Mickey (Woody Harrelson) and Mallory (Juliette Lewis), who set off on a love-soaked kill rampage across America. These latter-day Starkweathers clearly get off on the murders they commit, but it's the tabloid-obsessed audiences who are truly mesmerized. Stone uses lens filters, special effects, Dutch angles, black & white, animation, sitcom laughtracks, archival TV footage, and just about every experimental film technique you could think of to alternately take you inside the killers' heads then back out again into the media circus around them. If that sounds like the most paranoid amusement park ride of all time, that's because it is.

5. 'Pee-Wee's Big Adventure' (1985)

Paul Reubens is currently creating a whole new generation of fans through the resurrection of his most famous character, Pee Wee Herman, the wackiest manchild who ever was. Back in the day he won over Gen Xers and their parents alike through this crazypants road movie in which Pee Wee travels the country looking for his beloved bicycle. Tim Burton made his directorial debut, and he and Reubens' sensibilities go together like peanut butter and jellybeans (meaning deliciously). Playing like a live-action cartoon, the movie has everything from biker gangs to evil clowns to escaped convicts to Godzilla; just remember to steer clear of the basement if you visit The Alamo.

4. 'Easy Rider' (1969)

Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda rode their choppers into movie history and literally reshaped the cinematic landscape with this ode to freedom and irresponsibility. The born-to-be-wild duo of Billy and Captain America score a huge drug deal (cameo by legendary music producer & convicted murderer Phil Spector!) and take a magic Harley ride through a hippie commune, jail, Louisiana, and hillbilly country. Even though they "blew it, man" in a spiritual sense, they managed to make Jack Nicholson a star, open the floodgates for a wave of youth-oriented/director-controlled films, and define a generation. You dig?

3. 'Zombieland' (2009)

The second entry on our list of triptastic films to feature Woody Harrelson. Coincidence? We think not. With the planet engulfed in an apocalyptic zombie epidemic, the High Times poster boy hit the road with unlikely companion Jesse Eisenberg on a quest to find a certain cream-filled Hostess treat, kicking all manner of undead ass along the way. The chemistry between Harrelson's whiskey guzzlin', uzi totin' good ol' boy and Eisenberg's twitching powderkeg of neurosis melds perfectly, appropriate since the movie's tone exists somewhere between Woody Allen and Bruce Campbell. Sequel, please!

Thompson's freewheeling tome for the death of the American Dream had proved "unfilmmable" for decades after powerhouses like Martin Scorsese, Ralph Bakshi, and Oliver Stone couldn't get it off the ground. Dorothy's coma fantasy showcases a candy-colored land of cowardly lions, brainless scarecrows, heartless tin men, and a bunch of singing little people with a really bad union. Because it's important to teach children that ugly people are evil and pretty people are good, there are corresponding witches for said moral lesson. In defense of the Wicked Witch of the West, you'd be kinda peeved too if your skin had been bleached green in some apparent Land of Oz Nuclear Power Plant disaster. Cue up "Dark Side of the Moon" and let this movie whisk you down the Yellow Brick Road, and although skipping and singing towards your destination is great cardio, we recommend the Emerald City Commuter Bus for the trip back.
