Everyone has that friend with the red pen perpetually in hand, delighting in correcting your "whos" to "whoms."
We hate to admit it, but it's true: On occasion, we're that friend. Not only are we grammar snobs, we're also huge movie nerds. Sorry. You can just imagine the cringe that crosses our delicate faces every time someone utters the name of a certain Casey Affleck movie coming out this Friday. "Ain't Them Bodies Saints"? "Ain't Them?"
We're sorry to have to make an example of David Lowery, but he's not the only one who has committed English crime. Where's your hyphen, "The To Do List"? Did you mean to say something else, "She Hate Me"? In an effort to soothe our grammatically rattled souls, here are 10 copy edited movie posters. The wrongs have been made right. Get More »
Greetings from the apocalypse! Woody Allen may have been cracking wise with that quote, but when it comes to Wolverine, eternity is no laughing matter. Somehow this weekend has found a way to include both in your moviegoing diet, so let's feast, shall we? Get More »
Aubrey Plaza is no one trick pony. In fact, in this Friday's "The To Do List," she proves that she has all kinds of versatile skills up her sleeve in the role of Brandy Klark, an ambitious, self-serious, college-bound valedictorian who feels she has a little bit more learning to do before she heads off to college. She may have received sex ed in school but her practical experience is lacking, to say the least. Armed with a Trapper Keeper containing a filthy list of sex acts and very little know-how, Brandy sets out to get it — and herself — done before college. Summa cum laude, indeed.
Playing Brandy is a departure from Plaza's usual gig as scowly April Ludgate on NBC's "Parks and Recreation" — and even from her most high-profile film gig thus far, "Safety Not Guaranteed." NextMovie caught up with Plaza on a rooftop in San Diego's Gaslamp District during this year's Comic-Con to discuss her new movie, the nuances of skorts and how to make realistic fake semen. Aubrey Plaza is well on her way to becoming a national treasure. Her portrayal of April Ludgate, whose hipster sarcasm and stoicism hides a big, huge heart, is one of the best things about "Parks and Recreation." She's making quite a name for herself in the world of indie film, too, with acclaimed turns in last year's "Safety Not Guaranteed" and this week's "The To Do List." Get More »
Know what a "bumping donut" is?
It's only the first day of Comic-Con, but we're already thanking the geek gods for all of the awesome footage, posters and interviews rolling in. Included in the mix: this exclusive clip from "The To Do List," which features Brandy Klark (Aubrey Plaza) introducing herself to Willy (Bill Hader) for the first time.
In the raunchy coming-of-age comedy, Plaza is a college-bound valedictorian who wants to shed her good-girl image before heading off to university. The plan? Create a list of all the sex-related activities she missed out on in high school. With the help of her friends and older sister (Rachel Bilson), Brandy attempts to check these sexploits off her list one by one, all the while lusting after resident stud, Rusty Waters ("Friday Night Lights'" Scott Porter). We all know the drill by now: Movies are seasonal. Come winter, dramatic fare and Oscar hopefuls take center stage, demanding all the attention and boxes of tissues we can muster. Fall is a screamfest, while spring is ripe time for rom-coms. And come the dog days of July and summertime, you're gonna want to grab your fireproof suit and a pair of barbecue tongs to defend yourself: It's explosion time.
This year follows the trend perfectly: We have the monsters and robots of "Pacific Rim," hi-yos galore in the revamp of "The Lone Ranger" and sequels a-plenty with the trio of "Despicable Me 2," "Grown Ups 2" and "The Smurfs 2."
There's reason to hope, however, with this crop of four fantastic indies seeing July release, and one coming out so early in August that it's basically July anyway. Scout out your local art house and be ready for these decidedly different summer movies to break you out of your sweaty doldrums. Get More »
Writer/director Maggie Carey's "The To Do List," opening next month, is a comedy concerning a dweeby virgin (Aubrey Plaza, basically a female Max Fischer) who decides to become sexually experienced before leaving for college. Thankfully, it doesn't shy away from the dirtiness of old school sex comedies (informed, somewhat, by its 1993 setting) and the entire movie is a wild, oddly sweet coming-of-age with an emphasis on the coming. For just how raunchy this movie can get, a new red band trailer gives you a good idea. Get More »
While the "Anchorman" star was making the A-listers in the room LOL with his speech, the "Parks and Recreation" star — with the name of her August film "The To Do List" scrolled across her chest — jumped onstage and tried to wrestle the statue out of his hand. While it seemed like it may have been a gag, MTV News can confirm that the moment was anything but planned. Get More »
In the August movie, Plaza plays a high school student wanting to check some sexual life experiences off her bucket list before graduating and hitting the college dating scene. Somewhere along the way, she spends some of the film, well, loving herself, and she had to go into a bit of a fantasy world in order to shoot the self-love scene in front of the movie's crew.
