"The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" hits theaters in just over a week, and series author Cassandra Clare has fessed up to getting pretty darn emotional about all the hubbub in adapting her romantical-slash-supernatural story. In fact, at last night's big splashy L.A. premiere for the film she admitted to being absolutely reduced to tears when visiting the set. Get More »
Sigourney Weaver's name is practically synonymous with Sci-fi Scream Queen, and while she's had plenty of success with dramedies too, her true bread and butter has come from fiddling with the various fantastic film worlds filled with things like killer aliens and then some nice blue aliens and gooey ghosts and even robots with hearts! You get the gist; she's got a way with weird.
And, at least when compared to its contemporaries in interest, Cassie Clare's YA hit series "The Mortal Instruments" kinda goes there when it comes to strange stuff, like a maybe-maybe not brother and sister pair making out hardcore all the time and best friends turning into rats and motorcycles flying through the air and faerie queens spiking drinks with you-cannot-ever-leave-'til-I-say-so potions and such. Frankly, it's right up Weaver's alley, so if she's gonna do the teen scene ... and so it is. Weaver's now joined the cast of the second entry of the six-parter, "The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes." Get More »
It's always a good omen when the star of an anticipated film says that at one point during the filmmaking process, he found himself "standing there thinking, 'Oh God, this is going to be a disaster.'" Or, at least, the stars of "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" must hope so. Get More »
We here at NextMovie are as YA-curious as the next guy, and after paying a little visit to the Toronto, Ontario set of "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" we're thinkin' that maybe Sony's gotten itself that much-fussed Next Big Thing on its hands after all.
Yep, we trekked right up to Hollywood North and took studious notes while chatting up author Cassandra Clare and the film's shockingly gorgeous cast members: Lily Collins (that ruby-tressed heroine du jour, Clary Fray), Jamie Campbell Bower (main hunk Jace Wayland), Robert Sheehan (BFF-with-a-crush Simon Lewis), Kevin Zegers (the adoptive brohan with a 'tude, Alec Lightwood) and Jemima West (whip-wielder, Isabelle Lightwood). Sony Pictures is ready for its shot at the YA adaptation game with "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" rolling into theaters in a just over a month. With not one ("Divergent"), not two ("The Maze Runner") but three ("Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters") hopeful successors to the "Twilight"-"The Hunger Games" loot scoop on deck, all eyes are on the ticket counter* for this one.
The back-to-back floppery of "Beautiful Creatures" and "The Host" has left a lot of industry folks confused about the perceived ticketing draw of Young Adult book-to-film properties. Aren't these movies supposed to be raking in gobs of dough and keying up innumerable sequels, the last of which will be a two-parter of some sort? Where are all the ladies and their signs at the midnight lines and the tattoos and such? To that we say, see the list. Know the list. The formula is much more complicated than it might seem.
Young Adult Fiction is all the rage in cinema right now. True, "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" have made their final bows, but in their place has come a maelstrom of successors, including "The Hunger Games," "Warm Bodies," "Beautiful Creatures," "The Host," and the upcoming big-screen adaptations of "Divergent" and "The Mortal Instruments."
Most of these stories are seen through the eyes of a young heroine, and with all of these yarns sharing similar elements of romance, fantasy and conspiracy, keeping track of all the distinctive details of each leading lady and their respective heroine's journeys can be a daunting task indeed. In the interest of simplicity and at-a-glance organization, NextMovie's own Nick DeSantis (artwork) and Amanda Bell (stats) have conjured this handy chart to help in keeping all the ladies in line — literally.
