Perhaps the most prolific and reliable character actor of the last 20 years, Luis Guzman is nothing short of an American treasure. Think of your favorite movie right now — was Luis Guzman in it? There is statistically a 23.9% chance you just said "Yes." That's Luis's career in a nutshell. No one plays the goofy, lovable criminal, sidekick or law enforcement officer better than Guzman, and everyone in Hollywood knows it — that's why he's been in approximately 5,891 movies since 1990.
Guzman recently co-starred in "The Last Stand" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Johnny Knoxville, where he played a deputy sheriff to Schwarzenegger's head honcho. "The Last Stand" is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
Luis recently spoke with NextMovie about "The Power of Love," turning down Adam Sandler's private jet, and "Do It." Get More »
This week: Steven Soderbergh's supposedly final film "Side Effects" is a psychological thriller starring Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones. We tell you why it's a final work worth checking out.
Also new this week is the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to leading-man status in "The Last Stand," the YA supernatural romance "Beautiful Creatures," Al Pacino and Christopher Walken in "Stand Up Guys" and a 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray of "National Lampoon's Vacation." Get More »
It's been said that January and February are dumping grounds for awful movies, and sure, history tells us that box office performance is generally weak during the first couple months of the year.
But we say the curse is finally broken, as the two best movies of 2013
so far have hit theaters.
What's that? 2013 is only four weeks old and there's basically no competition? What's your point?
Without further ado, nigh on the first weekend of February, here are the two best movies of the year.
You said it, Reverend. Greetings from the apocalypse! As we continue our trek across this wind-blasted winter landscape of mediocre cinema, it's important not to toss hope in a ditch like grandma's ashes. Jumpstart the VW bus we found abandoned next to the exploded gas station and let's move onward into the long MLK weekend with our head held high and noseplug firmly secured. It's how the good Doctor would have wanted it. Get More »
We guess it's swell and all that Johnny Knoxville is starring in "The Last Stand" (especially since he seems to be playing the same character in a movie that also has the same plot as "Walking Tall"), but we can't help but wonder what it would be like if someone else had been chosen to "Stand" alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger for his big comeback movie. (And doesn't J-Knox look a little Photoshopped there, anyway?)
Anyhow, imagine the verbal quips Arnold could've shared with the ever-quotable Raymond Babbitt (aka "Rain Man") or the feats of derring-do he could've accomplished with Johnny Five as his back-up. And Danny DeVito? Please, it would be the magic of "Twins" all over again (rather than the dark sorcery of "Junior," of course).
Dream with us below, before harsh reality takes its toll when "The Last Stand" opens on Jan. 18.
One of the most prolific and indispensable character actors of the last 30 years, Luis Guzman is a walking time capsule of our generation. But did you know that Arnold Schwarzenegger's trusty co-star in "The Last Stand" has lived a sort of Paul Bunyan-esque life? We've compiled some fun facts about Luis that you may not have known. Ah, 2013. Breathe in that sweet, fresh, new year air. You're walking in a winter wonderland. Everything is new. A sense of possibility! A sense of having no clue what any of these January releases are about.
It's true: We've all been so wrapped up in hustling to see November and December's awards contenders before Hollywood's sparkliest posse gathers to repeatedly congratulate its members that we totally forgot that there are new movies coming out. "'Mama'? What's that?" you may think, puzzling over the coming soon roster. "Sounds sweet."
Gentle movie enthusiast, come with us. We'll guide you through January's new releases and show you the light, movie math style. Click ahead for our simple arithmetic breakdowns of the coming attractions.
(And for the record, "Mama" is not sweet. It's 98 percent likely to scare the living bejeezus out of you and undo whatever goodwill you may harbor toward Jessica Chastain after "The Help.") Get More »
Arnold Schwarzenegger may have spent the last decade or so mixing it up in the political arena rather than with bad guys in front of a camera, but if anybody thought his action career was over, they are about to get a major wake up call when they get a look at the first trailer for his upcoming shoot 'em up "The Last Stand."
Hey, he did say he would be back.
And boy, is he ever back, with "The Expendables 2" coming out later this week on a wave of fanfare. Get More »
Watch out, lawbreakers, because there's a new crimefighting duo in town and they go by the name of ... Arnold Schwarzenegger and Johnny Knoxville?
We're not quite sure just what is in the water down in New Mexico, but according to a press release from Lionsgate, Knoxville, Forest Whitaker and Harry Dean Stanton are among those who have joined Schwarzenegger on the set of the new shoot-em-up "The Last Stand." Looks like someone used the Casting Randomizer again. Get More »
