The witching hour is approaching fast, people, 'cause it's Halloween, and that means tonight the costumes will go on and once that spiked apple cider starts flowing, all inhibitions will probably soar right out the door. Will it be a treat? That totally depends.
'Til night falls, though, how about a little holiday-themed movie-to-book trickery to tide even your spookiest inner demons over?
A la their blood brothers over at "The Cabin in the Woods," the 2013 remake of 'Evil Dead,' not satisfied with merely scaring the ever-living s**t out of people for two hours at a time on the big screen, will be its own haunted maze come Halloween at Universal Studios in Orlando or Universal Studios Hollywood.
Someone's excited! (Though I feel like just flashing the above .gif on a projector against the side of the building would do the trick equally, right? Perhaps I speak only for myself?) Get More »
Basically, "The Cabin in the Woods" went and took all the usual conventions of an increasingly tired horror genre, balled 'em up into a bloody weird wad of awesome and then proceeded to blow everybody's minds with an endless barrage of monsters. The movie went from your everyday boo factor trip to some creepy old house into this gnarly statement on mortality and fear and a buncha other stuff that we still don't quite understand ... all stemming from the twisted little mind-matching of director Drew Goddard and his pal Joss Whedon.
And while Whedon's been off imbibing Shakespeare and preparing for "The Avengers 2," Goddard's been busy tooling on a way to keep right on creepin' everyone out with his board full of ghouls, and now he's found it. This Halloween, the Universal Studios-going world will have the chance to visit an actual "Cabin in the Woods" maze designed in part by the man himself. Get More »
Chris Hemsworth worked the rugged look in every possible way this year: outdoors guy, Norse god, huntsman and, now, homemade soldier. His rippling muscles and blue eyes alone prove there's something in the Aussie water.
This week he's trading in his mighty "Thor" hammer for an assault rifle in "Red Dawn," keeping America safe from invading communist forces.
Sure, Chris' younger brother Liam enjoyed some time in the spotlight this year with '"The Hunger Games," but between "Snow White and the Huntsman," "The Cabin in the Woods," "The Avengers" and now "Red Dawn," the elder Hemsworth is the only one we want to cuddle with out in the wilderness.
See for yourself with Chris' Hot People Looking Hot gallery. Trust us, you'll forget all about the threat of the North Korean army after going through these pics.
This week: Joss Whedon reinvigorates the horror genre with the shockingly clever "The Cabin in the Woods," starring a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth.
Also new this week is the sweet senior comedy "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," the music documentary "Katy Perry: Part of Me" and the Blu-ray collection "Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures." Get More »
If you heard the distant booming of cannons over the weekend, don't worry, that's just Hollywood announcing that another batch of box office challengers has been eliminated by the unstoppable force known as "The Hunger Games."
Yes, according to Hollywood.com, "The Hunger Games" has won the box office title for the fourth weekend in a row, earning $21.5 million to bring its total to a whopping $337 million. The last film to top the box office four weekends in a row was "Avatar," which took the top spot seven times.
It wasn't all bad news for the rest of the movie business, as "The Three Stooges" and "The Cabin in the Woods" both had solid debuts, earning $17.1 and $14.8 million respectively. For a look at the full box office chart, including returning films "Titanic 3D" and "American Reunion," head to Hollywood.com.
Because he's a generous guy, Joss Whedon is giving us another movie besides "The Avengers" this year. This week we're getting "The Cabin in the Woods," Whedon's take, with cowriter-director Drew Goddard, on the title horror subgenre that subverts expectations ... and then some.
Before you take a trip down the rabbit hole of this terror/sci-fi hybrid, we suggest boning up on the essentials, where the standards were set. Seclusion + nature - good sense ÷ gore = all the protagonists of these films. Get More »
Once upon a time, bad jokes would come and go in the blink of an eye. Then we got Photoshop, and bad jokes could live on, in full-color glory, forever and ever and ever.
In honor of producer Joss Whedon's phenomenal new horror/fantasy/whatever movie "Cabin in the Woods" and our ridiculous sense of humor, please enjoy this exclusive poster for the smash hit... "Kevins in the Woods."
The buzz around "The Cabin in the Woods" is deafening, and Jesse Williams is in the middle of the beehive.
The former teacher, model and "Grey's Anatomy" hot doc is part of the ensemble headed off to the "Woods" cooked up by cowriter Joss Whedon and writer-director Drew Goddard. His character Holden is a smart cookie who can also kick some butt, which comes in handy when he and his friends run into some serious trouble during a weekend getaway. To know more is the spoil the fun, so don't read any reviews -- just head for the "Cabin," and get to know a little bit more about Williams first. Get More »
South by Southwest starts on March 9, and Sundance had better watch its back.
Although Park City's film festival still reigns supreme as America's preeminent independent film event, Austin's SXSW is running a close second. The reason? It's cooler. And we're not talking the temperature. Get More »
