Crafting a Top 10 Movies of the Year list always presents a little bit of a conundrum: Do you include the greatest films created, technically and artistically speaking, or do you go with the ones you simply enjoyed the most? It's the "best" versus "favorite" argument.
I tend to lean toward the latter and highlight the movies that had the most emotional impact on me, be it through laughter, shock, thrills or tears.
Maybe it also helps to give less heralded movies some shine. "Argo" is probably a better film than "Ruby Sparks." But honestly, I enjoyed "Ruby Sparks" more. "Argo" will be on everyone else's list, and you may not have heard of "Ruby Sparks" or "Searching for Sugar Man," movies you'd probably really like.
So here are my 10 favorite movies of the year. And hey, at least I can always cheat with some Honorable Mentions. "Argo" made it there. Get More »
Awards season is now underway, which means for the next few months Hollywood will carry out its competitive annual tradition of putting roses on the noses, so to speak, of the year's decidedly best actors and actresses of the human variety. Looking back at some of the finest flicks from 2012, though, we noticed some pretty significant contributions coming in courtesy of the rest of the animal kingdom.
So, to throw our furry film friends a proverbial golden bone, here are our top five picks for tail-waggingest animal performances of the year. Get More »
Though "Ruby Sparks" may be one of Zoe Kazan's first leading roles in a movie, she's no stranger to Hollywood. Kazan has had supporting roles alongside such heavyweights as Ryan Gosling ("Fracture"), Leonardo DiCaprio ("Revolutionary Road") and Meryl Streep ("It's Complicated"). Not to mention she's the granddaughter of the late Oscar-winning filmmaker Elia Kazan ("On the Waterfront").
Kazan is now pulling double duty in "Ruby Sparks," which arrives on DVD and Blu-ray this week, having written the screenplay and playing the lead. Ruby is a fictional character created by young novelist Calvin (played by Kazan's real-life boyfriend Paul Dano) who suddenly appears in the flesh in Calvin's home the next morning. She's the girl of Calvin's dreams who can also be controlled by whatever he writes with his typewriter. As the movie progresses, their relationship stops being a fantasy and gets really real.
We're not making this up — thanks to our giveaway, two lucky people are going to win a "Ruby Sparks" Blu-ray.
"Ruby Sparks" follows Calvin Weir-Fields (Paul Dano), a novelist struggling with that condition most feared by creative-types: writer's block. Since he's having trouble finding his muse, he decides to make one instead — in the form of a pretty lady named Ruby Sparks (Zoe Kazan). The young scrible is soon striking up a romance with this fictional character, which creates all sorts of mind-boggling — and often very charming — existential conundrums. Get More »
When news broke that Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris had finally picked a project to follow up their Academy Award-winning feature film debut "Little Miss Sunshine," you can bet that more than a few eyebrows were raised. Sure their indie smash was a totally disarming winner, but their breakout film was made a whopping six years ago — and since then they've released zilch. Get More »
In the upcoming "Ruby Sparks," "vivid" is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to describing Calvin's imagination. The protagonist, played by Paul Dano, is an author struggling to write his next big novel. He finally feels inspired — not to mention in love — when he creates a character named Ruby Sparks (Zoe Kazan).
Like something out of "Pygmalion," Ruby shows up in Calvin's apartment the next day, and the writer can control her every thought, action and emotion with the clickity-clack of his typewriter. Calvin is faced with a difficult choice: have a real relationship with Ruby or use his typewriter to create a fairytale ending.
Now that we've sparked your interest, there's no need to keep wondering what "Ruby Sparks" will look like. Not only is the movie almost here (in select theaters Wednesday) but we've also got four never-before-seen exclusive images to give you a glimpse of this fantasy rom-com from Fox Searchlight. If you're looking for a break from a summer full of epic superhero movies, "Ruby Sparks" is the answer.
The movie follows Calvin (Paul Dano), a young novelist who finds inspiration in a new character has created, a young woman named Ruby Sparks (Zoe Kazan) who is also in love with the author. When Ruby comes to life in Calvin's apartment, they have to adjust to having their relationship in the real world.
It's been five years since "There Will Be Blood" hit theaters, but Paul Dano still can't escape the biggest catchphrase to come out of the Oscar-nominated movie — and probably of that year — "I drink your milkshake!"
During our interview for Dano's upcoming romantic comedy "Ruby Sparks," the star told us that fans still recite the quote to him, made famous by Daniel Day-Lewis in the film, and then some... Get More »
