The visual effects department had to do a pretty bang-up job to make Joseph Gordon-Levitt look even remotely similar to a young yippee ki-yaying mother-f---er Bruce Willis in Rian Johnson's time-hopping "Looper," but since Hollywood's baddest, baldest ass-kicker was blessed with three daughters and no sons in real life, there wasn't much of a choice. Sure, all that pain and suffering ultimately paid off, but there are some people who've got it way, way easier.

For fellow action hero Will Smith, for example, his prime mini-me is his own son Jaden who doesn't need a stitch of prosthesis to pull it off because, you know, doy. The two star as, surprise surprise, father and son in M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming sci-fi thriller "After Earth," and we swear that the older Fresh Prince Jr. gets, the more of that Big Willie Style he inherits.

Surprisingly enough, they're not the only Hollywood-ites to mirror one another so closely across the generation space. LaLa Land Looperism is actually more common than ya might think, and we've got our lucky 13 favorites plucked out right here for your amazement.

The casting director on "Stuck on Love" must've needed exactly zero minutes to knot together this mother-daughter pair for the indie family drama. One of the most eagerly anticipated — and simultaneously dreaded — films on the horizon is the indie drama "Greetings From Tim Buckley," which serves as a biopic of Tim's son, the late, great musician Jeff Buckley. From the moment it was announced until the moment it debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, fans were holding their breath, wondering if the movie and star Penn Badgley could possibly do Jeff justice.

Well, now we have the first trailer for "Greetings From Tim Buckley." And the verdict?

Looks like you'll have to watch it and judge for yourself.

Set in 1991, "Greetings from Tim Buckley" tells the story of a tribute concert for Tim Buckley, who became a folk icon before his untimely death at the age of 28 in 1975. The concert, of course, was headlined by Buckley, who only met his father twice — and who became a musical legend in his own right before his own untimely death at the age of 30 in 1997.

Turns out Penn Badgley is not just another pretty face – apparently he has a pretty voice as well. Who would've thought "Gossip Girl"'s Dan Humphrey could carry a tune? In his latest film, "Greetings From Tim Buckley," Badgley manages to capture the very essence of one of the most ethereal musicians of the '90s, Jeff Buckley.

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, "Greetings From Tim Buckley" chronicles the days in the life of Jeff Buckley leading up to a tribute concert for his mostly absent father, 1960s folk artist Tim Buckley.

We caught up with a particularly chatty Badgley to talk about how he prepared to play an iconic music artist, his own personal music background and, of course, his hair.

Going into this, were you a fan of Jeff Buckley or his father, Tim Buckley?
I didn't know Tim's music at all. I didn't know Tim existed before this script. And I was a fan of Jeff's. I think I listened to him the perfect amount. I deeply respected him and it was like, "That's Jeff Buckley. Of course, he's amazing," but I didn't know his music that well. I knew his live performances of Sin-é. His album I wasn't a huge fan of because of the broad '90s pop production. I love the music itself but it turned me off to a lot of the production and then once I got past that I just saw how beautiful and amazing it was.

I didn't even listen to him that much leading up to [filming the movie]. I studied him for like a week. Think about it: an entire week of watching one person. But the key there is evoking his qualities and being natural myself and letting the qualities that I have take over as opposed to mimicking him. Mimicry, to me, would have been the worst thing we could have done to this movie because he's not Ray Charles or Johnny Cash. He's this mysterious, misunderstood, weird, tragic icon. And to do him justice, you gotta do something different. I'm only using those examples because that's what everybody's like, they see that and they're like, "You have to look and sound and be exactly like him." And that's not what we were gonna do. There are plenty of biopics where they don't do that but I think that's become the standard … We're trying to get to a deeper, larger soul. We weren’t trying to be some big, bombastic "Look at Jeff Buckley" – it was more like "Look at Jeff Buckley, just for a second."

I'm talking so much because, for the first time, I'm so proud.

What was your musical background before coming into this movie?
I've always loved music. I listen to music the way a lot of actors watch movies. I'm actually cinematically totally uneducated. Haven't seen "Goodfellas" or "Grease." But I just poured over music. Neither of my parents play music. As weird as it was, my parents actually showed me "Kokomo" by The Beach Boys, All 4 One's "I Swear" and an Aaron Neville and Kathy Lee Gifford Christmas album. I mean, my parents have the worst musical tastes. But my dad listened to jazz. There was a Yusef Lateef album and a couple Miles Davis albums he had, the iconic stuff that everybody knows. So my musical background is weird in that I don't really have one. I love music and I've always sung to myself.

You were self-taught vocals and guitar, is that correct? Is what we see on screen all you?
Yeah. But I stopped playing the guitar for about eight years so, when I got this movie, I was like, "Oh, s**t."

[What you see on screen] is all live too. We all did it. The whole concert, everything was real. We played the concert without stopping all the way through. We just did that three times. Thank God it all worked. But the real important thing is that the reason anybody watching the movie feels something is because it was simple and honest and real. And that's the coolest thing about it.

Now that you've had a taste for music, will there ever be a Penn Badgely album? Will you be transitioning to music?
There will never be a Penn Badgely album [laughs]. But for the first time, I'm friends with a bunch of musicians, so I'm playing with them and opening for them. But I've gotta get my legs. There was this thing online of me singing "Lilac Wine." It's good that people liked it, but it's also not representative of what I want to do at all. I got talked into doing that by a good friend who was like "You just gotta play, so do 'Lilac Wine.'" I was like, "No, I can't do that! I've never played before. It's messy – that's Jeff's thing." I want to play music, I like to play music. I don't know where that will go.

There has been so much fuss over your hair in the past year – do you agree with it?
You know what's so funny about that? It's my hair. On the show ["Gossip Girl"] since day one, it's been such a topic of conversation with producers. And no matter what I do, even if they've asked me to do it a year prior, they're not happy. They're just not happy with my hair. Ever. So what I'm gonna do, I think, finally, when it's over, is just shave it off and get rid of all that. It's like, "Uhh, beard? No beard? I'm sorry – it's my hair. I'm not asking your opinion [laughs]." It’s like, it's long because I'm trying to grow my hair out, would you calm down?!

James Dean-esque musician Jeff Buckley has the "died too young" mystique, and that's been a big part of the devotion he's inspired in his fans, but there's another component as well: The guy was an actual, honest-to-God great singer.

When it was announced that "Gossip Girl" star Penn Badgley would portray Jeff Buckley in the indie biopic "Greetings From Tim Buckley" it was met with a hearty amount of skepticism, but it seems like the pretty boy actor might just be able to deliver in the singing department if a new YouTube video (via My Discman Broke) is any indication.

Badgley, who shot "Greetings" last year, decided to perform live in a club for the first time in his life this past weekend at Cameo Gallery, and played the cover of "Lilac Wine" from Buckley's 1994 album "Grace." You can compare it to the original here, and see that he's actually doing a better-than-expected mimicry of the singer who died of accidental drowning in 1997.

The song was originally written by James Shelton in 1950, and had well-received covers by Nina Simone and Elkie Brooks, but it was Buckley's soulful rendition that introduced the track to a whole new generation. Generation X, to be specific.

"Greetings," which co-stars Imogen Poots, revolves around the 1991 tribute concert for his famous father Tim Buckley at St. Ann's Church, and the woman Jeff meets along the way. While this film is sanctioned by the estate of Tim Buckley, there's a rival version called "Mystery White Boy" starring Broadway's Spider-Man, Reeve Carney, as Jeff and is actually endorsed by Jeff's estate.

Whether either of them can capture the star's life, we can safely say that Badgley has at least got one part pretty right.

It-girl du jour Imogen Poots is clearly on the rise— the blond bombshell just landed the female lead opposite "Gossip Girl" heartthrob Penn Badgley in the soon-to-shoot "Greetings From Tim Buckley."

The drama, written by Emma Sheanshang, David Brendel and Dan Algrant (who will also direct), follows the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley's famed 1991 performance at a tribute concert for his father, who had abandoned him.

Poots will play a young woman who meets Buckley (Badgley) while working at the concert, and, shockingly totally predictably catches his eye. The two take off on a four-day journey together that will change both of their lives, Deadline reports.

Sounds like good movie fare to us.

Shooting is slated to begin as soon as next month, which means it shouldn't be too long before we see these two hotties tearing it up (and maybe taking it off?) on the silver screen.

In the meantime, however, you can catch Poots in the comedy horror flick, "Fright Night," which hits theaters August 19. Summer's feeling hotter already.

Penn Badgley will indeed be playing the role of Jeff Buckley in an upcoming film featuring the late singer-songwriter, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

However, this is not the same Jeff Buckley film that Badgley was rumored to have been involved with last week. You know, the one that the "Gossip Girl" star had supposedly been chosen for over Robert Pattinson.

That film, which still doesn't have its Buckley, is currently untitled. This film, in which Penn Badgley has officially been cast as Buckley, is called "Greetings From Tim Buckley."

"Greetings From Tim Buckley" chronicles the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s 1991 appearance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he comes to understand the father who abandoned him and his cathartic performance launches his career.

Patrick Milling Smith of Smuggler Films, the production company behind the project, apparently couldn't be happier about the casting of Badgley:

"We had been searching well over a year for an actor that can come close to Jeff's spirit while also having the serious musical chops required to authentically tell this story. Penn's audition blew us away and we knew we found our star."

Meanwhile, the role of Jeff Buckley in the currently untitled biopic that's set to be directed by Jake Scott and produced by Orian Williams is still uncast. Williams went on the record last week to say that neither Badgley nor Pattinson were involved with that project, though he did say that he had "met with" the latter gentleman.

Which means RPattz could still get that one.

Got all that? It starts to make sense the more you talk about it...

Meanwhile, Penn Badgley is probably best known for his role as Dan Humphrey on "Gossip Girl." His film credits include "John Tucker Must Die," "The Stepfather" and "Easy A." And we think he will make a fine Jeff Buckley... in one of the Jeff Buckley movies currently in the works.

"Greetings From Tim Buckley" will begin production in New York City this August.

UPDATE: Penn Badgley has NOT been cast in the untitled Jeff Buckley biopic, according to the film's co-producer, Orian Williams.

"Penn is not involved in the film at all," Williams said in a phone interview with the Los Angeles Times. "It's crazy how these stories get out."

When asked about Robert Pattinson being a contender for the role of the late singer-songwriter, Williams said that although he's a fan of the "Twilight" star, he'd only had preliminary meetings with him.

Casting for the project probably won't begin until October.

When you've got three of young Hollywood's hottest stars battling for the lead in your film (before it even has a title), you know you're doing something right.

That's exactly the situation director Jake Scott found himself in when Oscar-nom James Franco, "Twilight" heartthrob Rob Pattinson and "Gossip Girl" thesp Penn Badgley started battling for the lead role in a biopic about Jeff Buckley, the famed musician who died at 30.

Sure, watching these three duke it out was probably fun for a while, but ultimately, a decision had to be made — and (perhaps surprisingly) rumor has it that Badgley's nabbed the part.

Franco has so much going on he might not even have noticed, but how is poor Rob holding up?

According to an unnamed insider, Rob "is devastated he's lost out on the one role he really wanted… [he] was really pushing himself to get it." The source tells Hollywood Life, "Rob hasn't heard 'no' a lot lately, so he's really bummed. He was passionate about this project."

If the rumors are true, however, though Rob is disappointed, Penn is ecstatic. The same chatty insider claims "Penn thinks it's the film of a lifetime… He's been trying to push out of the 'Gossip Girl' image and knows this film will be the perfect opportunity to do so."

Can't argue with that.

And we're pretty sure Rob will find another role of a lifetime or two fall in his lap very soon.

This weekend, Hollywood's movers and shakers will be gathering in Los Angeles for one of the biggest award events around -- assuming, of course, Kanye West lets them.

So what should the discerning movie fan be on the lookout for at MTV's 2010 Video Music Awards (this Sunday at 9 p.m. EST)? Our money is on the crowded "Video of the Year" category, which has previously proven to be a breeding ground for acclaimed directors such as Spike Jonze and David Fincher.

And, of course, you can't overlook Kanye himself, who is going to be introduced by this summer's MTV Movie Awards host Aziz Ansari; considering Ansari has appeared in just about every decent comedy Hollywood has put out over the last two years, who knows what might go down in West's highly anticipated return to the VMAs. Is a surprise guest spot by Ansari's "Get Him to the Greek" co-star, Russell Brand, in the cards? After all, his fiancé, Katy Perry, is one of the presenters. Hmm…

OK, so that may be just speculation at this point, but to help you further plan your VMA viewing experience, here are a few movie stars we do know will be on hand (and make sure you don't flip away during the commercials, because we're guessing you may get a sneak peek at some of their films).

Take a quick look at the rest of our list. Go on, we'll wait. OK, notice a pattern? Yes, everyone else is appearing alongside the co-stars of their latest movie. So why is that important? Only because Cher's new movie is "Burlesque," which happens to co-star a certain someone named Christina Aguilera. Don't be surprised if Xtina makes a surprise appearance and maybe even (dare we hope?) joins Cher for a duet.

Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Jesse Eisenberg

It's not often that someone overshadows J.T., especially not at the VMAs, but that may be the case this year when he appears with his "Social Network" co-stars. And it's not even current It-boy Eisenberg we're talking about -- it's Andrew Garfield, who will likely have every eye glued to him thanks to his recent casting as the lead in the new "Spider-man" relaunch.

The Cast of 'Jackass'

Expect a big welcome for the cast of "Jackass," which returns to the place where it all started, MTV. We're not sure if they have any stunts planned, though we don't think it would be too much to ask to at least get Eminem in one of those flying harnesses. Regardless of what form their rebellion takes, though, we expect that by the time Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O leave the stage, they will have made an indelible mark on the VMAs -- and on the impressionable minds of those watching at home.

Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson

The team of "Star Trek" hunk Pine and "Sin City" femme fatale Dawson may not seem like the most obvious pairing, but that's only if you haven't heard about their new film, "Unstoppable," which co-stars Denzel Washington in a story about a runaway train. We don't expect Denzel to make an appearance (though the VMAs are always full of surprises) but that's OK; if all three of them were on stage at the same time, the intense concentration of physical hotness might cause the whole event to implode.

Emma Stone and Penn Badgley

Talk about a power couple: thanks to last year's surprise smash "Zombieland," Emma Stone is one of the hottest young actresses in Hollywood, while Penn Badgley has been setting hearts aflutter on The CW's "Gossip Girl." Considering that their new film, "Easy A," is a perfect match for MTV's hip target demographic, we have a feeling that their VMA appearance could be the talk of the Internet next week.
