Actors and actresses from all walks of life populate Hollywood, just waiting to display a range of accents that perfectly represent whatever nationality they're portraying onscreen. Unfortunately, only about two dozen actors at any given time can actually open a movie at the box office.

'One Day' Soundtrack Resurrects '90s Classics

One Day
Focus Features

Critics may be tripping over themselves thinking of new pejorative words to describe "One Day," but eternal optimists can at least look to the film's soundtrack for a glimmer of quality.

Adapted from David Nicholls' best-selling 2009 book of the same name, Lone Scherfig's romance follows Dexter (Jim Sturgess) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) over the course of 20 years, starting with the pair meeting as university students in 1988 and checking up on them every subsequent anniversary of the day they met.

You'd think following two people over two decades would necessitate a time-spanning soundtrack. Get More »

Video Q&A: Jim Sturgess on Dex's 'Epic Journey' in 'One Day'

Jim Sturgess in One Day

You'd think that playing an upper-class bloke would be a nice change of pace for Jim Sturgess, who was last seen in Peter Weir's intense drama "The Way Back." In that film, Sturgess played Janusz, a man who escapes from a gulag in Siberia and walks 4,000 miles to India.

But Sturgess admits in our exclusive interview that Dexter, his character in the film "One Day," is grappling with his own demons... and they're no walk in the park, either. As someone who drinks and drugs his way to the top of a fancy TV career and then falls way, way down, Dexter is a complicated dude with a lot on his mind -- including his longtime friend Emma, played by Anne Hathaway.

And then there are all the fans of the David Nicholls novel, whom Sturgess knows may have formed their own ideas about Dex in their minds. Luckily, director Lone Scherfig had the final say when it came to casting Sturgess in the role. "I just have to hope that's all right," Sturgess grins.

Watch the video and see what else Sturgess had to say about Dex, the novel and the making of the film.

Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess Say Yes to Discomfort

MTV

Usually it's a bad thing for curious fans when celebrities only give yes or no answers during an interview -- but not when the interview takes place on MTV's After Hours.

Case in point: the brand new interview with "One Day" stars Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway, who prove that sometimes a yes/no question is the best question of all when they participate in the newest game show sensation, "The Yes/No Show."

Is Sturgess on medication? Is Hathaway's Catwoman better than Halle Berry's? Do the stars Google themselves? If you want to find out the answers, head over to MTV Movies Blog -- and say yes to entertainment.

Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess Unite for 'One Day' Trailer

Focus

The romance genre is one that's particularly difficult to nail. The films walk a tonal line -- on one side fluffy and frivolous, the other too heavy for its own good. It's about finding something genuine, a relationship that can captivate as well as relate to audiences. Many have tried, few have succeeded.

This summer, Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess will give it a go under the supervision of "An Education" director Lone Scherfig, in the new romantic drama, "One Day." Get More »
