Music isn't the only thing that rocks in "Rock of Ages." After all, '80s fashion is totally making a comeback.

Now, before you roll your eyes and get really nervous, take a beat. Regardless of the silliness, there's no denying Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Mary J. Blige and the rest of the gang look incredible. And you don't have to go big like they did when the Bourbon Room was in its heyday.

In the late 1950s/early '60s, rock 'n' roll was still in its infancy, drawing from such musically and racially disparate genres as country, R&B, gospel and blues for influence and inspiration. It had only been a few years since Billboard stopped calling R&B songs "race records," and the U.S., especially in the South, remained racially divided, with many black women serving as maids for white families.

Tate Taylor's upcoming film adaptation of the popular 2009 book "The Help" explores the racial and class dynamics between the titular maids and the families they support, with an accompanying soundtrack that draws from folk, country, doo-wop and early rock 'n' roll.

With the exception of "The Living Proof," a new song written and recorded by Mary J. Blige, "The Help" soundtrack is period-appropriate, combining classics such as Bob Dylan's folky "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" and Chubby Checker's pioneering "Let's Twist Again" with lesser-known tracks like Webb Pierce's country-tinged "I Ain't Never" and the vibrant gospel of Mavis Staples' "Don't Knock."

Dealing with such a politically charged environment, it's only natural the film's music supervisors would choose their selections based as much on social consciousness as musical ability and diversity. Bo Diddley ("Road Runner") and Ray Charles ("Hallelujah I Love Her So") were two of the first black musicians to make the white kids go nuts, while everything you need to know about gospel singer Dorothy Norwood is in the title "Victory Is Mine."

Blige, whose own aunt was a maid to a wealthy white family, wrote "The Living Proof" from the point of view of Aibileen (Viola Clark), a middle-aged black maid who recently lost her only son. It's an anthemic, gospel-tinged R&B track written to inspire; as Blige sings, "It's gonna be some lonely nights/But I am ready to carry on/I am so glad the worst is over/I can start living now."

More often than not, movies are made with one goal in mind:  box office return. A steady stream of sequels, prequels, reboots, redos, remakes and all other manner of "been there, done that" stories come out of Tinseltown to make that cash grab.

Today Mary J. Blige offers the “The Living Proof” that there's still heart in Hollywood.

When the singer-songwriter saw a screening of "The Help" starring Emma Stone (“Easy A”) and Viola Davis (“Doubt”) she couldn't help (sorry) but be inspired to lend her voice to the film. Based on the bestselling novel by the same name, "The Help" takes place in 1960s Mississippi, a time and place where African American maids were regularly trusted to raise the children in wealthy white families -- yet were denied use of something as basic and human as the bathroom.

Opening in theaters on August 12th, "The Help" follows three women, one white journalist (Stone) and two of the maids (Davis and the hilarious Octavia Spencer), who decide to tell the stories of the always essential, and often overlooked, "help." Blige was reminded of a favorite aunt when she saw the film and immediately sat down to write the song "The Living Proof" to give it an anthem that would bring it all together.

The last time Catherine Zeta-Jones decided to do a little singing and dancing onscreen, she walked away with an Oscar. So, if you're directing a big budget musical, you might want to ask her to come along for the ride.

Adam Shankman did, and now Zeta-Jones has officially joined the star-studded cast of "Rock of Ages" to rock out wuth Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Mary J. Blige and Russell Brand.

According to The Wrap, Zeta-Jones will be playing the villainous mayor who wants to keep rock and roll out of Los Angeles.

If the film adaptation sticks closely to the stage musical, Zeta-Jones won't get to belt out any big 1980s ballads, but we wouldn't be surprised if they make an exception for their Oscar winner.

Zeta-Jones has been in headlines recently for her hospitalization and candor for her mental health issues. She's been having a tumultuous time due to the illness of her husband, actor Michael Douglas, and it's good to see her name associated with a big and fun movie role. She's been absent from the big screen since 2009, but is ready to come back and remind everyone who she is. She has several films lined up, all of them hitting theaters in 2012, but none of them are any bigger than "Rock of Ages" -- and that's just describing the hair!

"Rock of Ages" is in rehearsals now, and will begin shooting any day now. It hits theaters on June 1, 2012.

To be fair, not even Meryl Streep could have made "Glitter" sparkle, and plenty of actresses have shined only when they got a shot at quality material.

Meow.

Movies: "Crossroads" (2002)

Report: She was playing an aspiring singer, she was surrounded by talent like Dan Akroyd, Kim Cattrall, Justin Long and Taryn Manning and the teenybopper storyline revolved around three BFFs on a road trip, yet surprisingly, Britney's first major big-screen role was a big dull dud. Even more surprisingly: the mess, a commercial and critical flop, was written by Shonda Rhimes. Yes, that Shonda Rhimes.

Gwen Stefani

Movies: "The Aviator" (2004)

Report: Her onscreen time was relatively brief, but Stefani's turn as Hollywood legend Jean Harlow was memorable in the Martin Scorsese-directed Howard Hughes biopic. Stefani's wide-eyed look and retro-inspired style, aided by a top-notch hair and make up crew, of course, led to an impeccably accurate portrayal of Harlow, whose star-making role came courtesy of Hughes and his 1930 hit "Hell's Angels."

Jessica Simpson

Movies: "The Dukes of Hazzard" (2005), "Employee of the Month" (2006)

Report: Whatever else happened onscreen -- including a nominee for worst line ever when her Daisy Duke tells a cop, "I think something bounced up into my undercarriage" -- Simpson had made sure she filled out her denim Daisy Dukes nice and properly, so all was mostly forgiven for that one. As for her follow up, with Dane Cook, in "Employee of the Month," there's too much bad acting to forgive, but we sure do want to forget it.

Movies: "Smokin' Aces" (2006), "The Nanny Diaries" (2007), "The Secret Life of Bees" (2008)

Report: R&B/pop diva Keys brought her laidback cool to the role of Georgia Sykes, the hitwoman who, with partner Sharice Watters (Taraji P. Henson), is hired to off Vegas magician and wannabe gangster Buddy "Aces" Israel (Jeremy Piven). Her subsequent roles, in "The Nanny Dairies" and "The Secret Life of Bees," were much lower key, but "Aces" has us hopin' for more guntotin', action-packed performances from the new mama.

Movies: "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" (2009)

Report: Her role as singing bartender Tanya, BFF of Taraji P. Henson's April, in Tyler Perry's "I Can Do Bad All By Myself," was enough to have us excited for her first major starring role, playing legendary jazz singer and pianist Nina Simone in the 2012 biopic "Nina."

Movies: "Grindhouse: Planet Terror" (2007), "Nine" (2009)

Report: Who wouldn't have fun playing Tammy (the lesbian lover of Marley Shelton's married anesthesiologist Dakota), who gets attacked and has her brains eaten by zombies while trying to reunite with Dakota? Not Fergie, whose performance in the Robert Rodriguez horror flick was every bit as convincing as her big song-and-dance number in "Nine."

Jennifer Hudson

Movies: "Dreamgirls" (2006), "Sex and the City" (2008), "The Secret Life of Bees" (2008)

Report: Oscar and Golden Globe wins for Hudson's performance as Effie White not only surprised viewers who'd watched her awkwardly sing her way to a seventh-place finish on the third season of "American Idol," but also forced snarky "AI" judge Simon Cowell to admit he'd underestimated the skills and star potential of the former reality TV star.

Movies: "Valentine's Day" (2010)

Report: She won the Teen Choice Award for Breakout Female, but it's tough to gauge whether she was acting -- playing giggly high schooler Felicia, who's enjoying puppy love and teddy bear gifts from boyfriend Willy (Taylor Lautner) -- or whether she was just living out on screen the crushes she and boy Taylor allegedly (if her new songs are being interpreted correctly) lived out in real life.

Movies: "Domino" (2005), "Idlewild" (2006), "For Colored Girls" (2010)

Report: If you need a quirky character actress, quirky character Gray may just be your woman. She's memorably played half of a fake I.D.-making set of twins ("Domino"), a drunken nightclub diva named Taffy (in "Idlewild") and, in "For Colored Girls," a creepy back-alley abortionist who "will make you rethink ever having unsafe sex," according to Huffington Post reviewer Jenee Darden.

Janet Jackson

Movies: "Poetic Justice" (1993), "Nutty Professor II" (2000),"Why Did I Get Married?" (2007), "For Colored Girls" (2010)

Report: Those of us who remember her in "Good Times" and as Willis' girlfriend on "Diff'rent Strokes" weren't so surprised to see her unfurl her acting talents on the big screen after her mega-successful pop star career took hold. As for critical response to those roles, she did receive Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for "Poetic Justice" ... in the best original song categories; she also won a Razzie Award for Worst New Star for the flick. Her more recent, dramatic roles -- as successful women whose personal and professional lives don't mesh -- in Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?" flicks and "For Colored Girls," have won her far more positive reviews.
