If you've going to make an Oscar-nominated, critically heralded movie musical based on theatrical powerhouse "Les Miserables," you'd better do it right. And this bonus feature from the soon-to-be-released DVD for "Les Mis" shows that its actors — Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Eddie Redmayne, and so on — didn't just show up to set and sing. No sir, as true-to-form vocalists, the actors (who sang live to camera, if you weren't aware from the five billion comments they made about it in the press) went through warm-ups.
And if you don't know anything about vocal warm-ups, you should really watch this video. Because Samantha Barks basically meows like a cat at an ear drum-shattering decibel, but you know what? It works. It so works. In fact, if you think being a movie star isn't hard work, just you watch Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter do off-camera trills. Watch and learn, friends.
And then howl...from your diaphragm.
If there's one thing you can say about "Les Miserables," it's that its actors — particularly Oscar nominees Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway — don't just chew the scenery. They gnaw, gobble, and chew it up, before spitting it out again -- but, hey, that's how you win an Oscar, isn't it? (We'll find out on Sunday.)
Did you ever think "The Lord of the Rings"' Gollum — of all people, nay, creatures — could emote the same raw, haunting, endlessly-tragic passion that Jackman and Hathaway helped make "Les Miz" an epic soul-crusher? Well, one YouTuber decided to turn that question into a reality by doing his best impression of Gollum singing "I Dreamed A Dream."
If you're like me, the frogginess of his throat will make your toes curl in repulsion, your stomach ready to deep heave in disgust. But you're probably not like me (because I have a thing with voices, sorry) and you will enjoy this.
