New on DVD and Blu-ray: 'The Cabin in the Woods' and More

This week: Joss Whedon reinvigorates the horror genre with the shockingly clever "The Cabin in the Woods," starring a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth.

Also new this week is the sweet senior comedy "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," the music documentary "Katy Perry: Part of Me" and the Blu-ray collection "Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures."

'The Cabin in the Woods'

Storyline: The initial premise will seem familiar to horror fans — five college friends go to a remote cabin in the woods to party for the weekend — until the group becomes pawns in a planned sacrifice that is bigger in scope than they could have ever imagined. This meta-horror mind-bender produced and co-written by Joss Whedon and directed and co-written by Drew Goddard stars Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchinson, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins and a certain genre legend in a cameo.
Extras! While there are many behind-the-scenes featurettes included on both the DVD and Blu-ray, the one to not miss is "We Are Not Who We Are: Making 'The Cabin in the Woods,'" in which Whedon and Goddard go full nerd and describe how they locked themselves in a hotel room for days and cranked out the first draft, their fortune of having "Thor" in the film and more.
We Say: What horror film ever gets a 90% Fresh rating? The brilliant part of "The Cabin in the Woods" is that when you find out what is really going on, it's nothing you could have predicted or expected. Although it's never truly terrifying, this loving send-up of the genre is not to be missed and the nods to countless horror movies will have fans geeking out right up until the mind-blowing finale.

'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel'

Storyline: Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and Tom Wilkinson star in this British comedic adventure about seven seniors that decide to "outsource" their retirement to a resort in India, where friendships and romances blossom in unexpected ways.
Extras! The best bonus features are exclusive to the Blu-ray, including a feature on the real hotel and "Trekking to India: Life Is Never the Same."
We Say: This isn't groundbreaking cinema, but it is a sweet story filled with emotional performances by its talented cast of veteran actors.

'Katy Perry: Part of Me'

Storyline: This music documentary for fans of the popular "Firework" songbird features behind-the-scenes interviews, personal moments between Perry and her pals, footage of rehearsals, a look at the choreography and more.
Extras! Both the DVD and Blu-ray contain more backstage footage from Perry's "California Dreams" tour. The pop doc is also available in 3-D in the combo pack for those that want their pop stars to pop out of the TV.
We Say: If you're a fan of Perry's spirited ditties, then this movie satisfies by showcasing the hard work and dedication that Perry puts into her hit-making machine.

'Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures' Blu-ray

Storyline: This collection of our favorite globetrotting archeology professor turned whip-cracking adventurer Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) features the coveted Blu-ray debuts of "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," as well as the more recent "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which was previously available on BD.
Extras! The set contains seven hours of behind-the-scenes footage, including an hour of previously unreleased material.
We Say: This beloved quadrilogy by director Steven Spielberg and creator George Lucas (yes, even "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" got a "Fresh" Rotten Tomatoes rating, you hindsight haters) is the Holy Grail of Blu-rays. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" has been meticulously restored and looks like it came out yesterday, while "Temple of Doom" and "The Last Crusade" have also been remastered for their high-definition upgrades. A treasured franchise like this is the reason Blu-ray was invented.

No? Then it's our pleasure to introduce you to Kitty Purry, a multi-talented feline whose fandom knows no bounds. Her rags-to-riches story is being chronicled in the new biopic, "Kitty Purry: Part of Me."

You might say that Kitty Purry's road to superstardom was a bit less rocky than that of her human counterpart, Katy Perry. Sure, Kitty didn't have a hit single that received as much airplay as, say, "I Kissed a Girl," but at least there was no short-lived marriage to Russell Brand (or is that Russell Terrier Brand?).

Ultimately, Kitty's just One of the Cats. Thanks to our pal Old Red Jalopy for helping tell her story and for providing a fine new addition to our collection of cat movie posters.

5 Movie Roles Katy Perry Could Nail

Making a concert documentary doesn't exactly require a well-endowed thespian bone — instructions: sing, dance, chat on-camera about singing and dancing, etc. — but Katy Perry, the subject of this July's "Katy Perry: Part of Me," has proven before that she actually does have a set of acting chops to work with.

She voiced a character for last year's "The Smurfs" and has dabbled in TV, and while she's got "Smurfs 2" on deck, is rumored for another music movie, "One Chance," and dreams of being in "Blade Runner 2," we hope she'll soon step outside of that zone and give acting some full-throttle acceleration. These five movie roles would totally suit such a transition.

Wonder Woman

C'mon. Just look at her. Katy Perry has the perfect, um, physical endowments to portray the legendary comic book heroine Wonder Woman (a.k.a. Diana of Themyscira). The buxom sometimes-brunette has the picaresque face, legs for days stature and tender attitude for the part. Plus, Katy Perry loves to play dress-up. Just imagine her in the costume. It's a cosplay dream come true. Adrianne Palicki's cute and all, but with Katy Perry around, it's hard to even fathom how anyone else could be pictured in the role.

Capitol Hottie

We love Katy Perry, and we love "The Hunger Games." Putting the two together? Win. And since she already sports fashions highly suitable for the Capitol lifestyle, we could totally picture her as one of the stylists or some sexy officer of Panem for "Catching Fire." Bonus? She'd probably get to keep whatever zany hair color(s) she's workin' at the time. In the alternative, she'd make for one sponsor-friendly Quarter Quell tribute.

Seelie Queen

If it's too late for Katy Perry to muster a place in "The Hunger Games," fellow YA phenom "The Mortal Instruments" is still an option. As far as we know, the Queen of Seelie Court (Faerie Queen) has yet to be cast because she won't come into the picture until later in the series, but could you imagine? Long ruby locks, pointy ears, elegant gowns and wings? All that plus Katy Perry's natural baby blues? Now that's an image. We also wouldn't complain if she were one of those fierce she-shadowhunters. Just sayin'.

Hot "Transformers 4" Girl

Megan Fox, Schmegan Fox. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley who? "Transformers 4" will take the series in a different direction — possibly into outer space — with a new cast in tow, so Katy Perry should totally get the resident hot girl role. The typical props involved — fast cars and a bevy of spiffy weapons — would match up with her well, especially if, say, she were to play a badass warrior chick a la pal Rihanna in "Battleship." Michael Bay, look no further!

Stripper

Thanks to Channing Tatum and Co. with "Magic Mike," stripper is the new pink. So, this option almost writes itself. Sure, Katy Perry's been known to don her fair share of barely-there and risqué frocks, sing about kissing girls and, err, tweet about diddling skittles, but somehow she's still one of America's sweethearts. If she really wanted to step away from Smurfette, a stripper-themed movie would definitely be one way to do it. Not to mention it'd be guaranteed box office gold whether or not she actually took it all off.

Katy Perry has always dreamt big, so it's no surprise the pop star is seeing her dreams play out on the big screen in the intimate new 3-D documentary "Katy Perry: Part of Me."

"When I was a 19-year old girl, [I] just moved to Los Angeles and I had this dream, like I knew exactly what I wanted to do," Perry tells us in the video above. "I guess I foreshadowed my future in some ways."

What she didn't anticipate, though, was her marriage to actor Russell Brand slowly falling apart during filming. With the cameras rolling, Perry can be seen uncontrollably backstage before a performance.

"If you were to have seen that movie without even a mention of it, you would be a bit confused, I think, and it would be silly and ignorant of me to think I could have completely avoided it."

Fans can get a full-on 3-D experience of the pop singer's highs and lows when "Katy Perry: Part of Me" hits theaters July 5.

Katy Perry Dreams of Being a Replicant in 'Blade Runner 2'

Believe it or not, Katy Perry is a total sci-fi chick.

During our interview with the pop star for her upcoming movie, "Katy Perry: Part of Me," we asked her what would be a fantasy gig were she to dip her toes into deeper acting waters. She surprised (and impressed) us with a dream role that doesn't involve donning a furry costume or gracing a certain bathing suit and tall boots. In fact, her pick would be a bit more, well, robotic.

"I guess, if there was going to be a 'Blade Runner 2,' that I would maybe want to be Rachael," she told us exclusively. "But I know that is saying too much. But that's a dream, and I have lots of 'em."

For those who haven't seen the 1982, Ridley Scott-directed classic, Sean Young played the original Rachael, a replicant (or genetically engineered organic robot) who believes herself to be human. Harrison Ford famously starred as retired police officer Rick Deckard.

Alcon Entertainment has the rights to make "Blade Runner" sequels and prequels and Scott is reportedly keen to make a second film. No word yet from Ford or Young on reprising their roles, so maybe Miss Perry is onto something.

'Katy Perry: Part of Me' Debuts Three Days Early With Twitter Fan Premieres

It's official: the Katy Perry movie is (almost) here.

Though "Katy Perry: Part of Me" doesn't strut into theaters Thursday, July 5, the songstress-turned-"actress" tweeted fans with news of special advance screenings of the 3-D film that will happen on Monday, July 2. Didn't get the memo? Don't fret.

To promote the one-day-only shows, the powers-that-be have created the hashtag #KP3D Movie Sneak that will point Twitter's millions of users to a direct link where they can nab tickets to the advance showings. But … (drum roll please) … there's more!

At every special screening location, moviegoers will snap up a pair of pink collectible Katy Perry RealD 3-D glasses and an exclusive pin-up poster. The promotion links "Katy Perry: Part of Me" directly with Katy's 22 million Twitter followers, allowing them to be part of the film-making process. Which is pretty cool if you ask us.

But what do Katy's fans think?

"From Katy's first Tweet announcing the movie, her fans have been incredibly passionate and supportive," the President of Insurge Pictures (who's pretty important, just FYI) explained. "We want to make sure they are among the first to see the film they helped shape."

The early showings of the flick will play on a whopping 100 screens in the U.S. and Canada at both 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. So grab your best girlfriends and mark your calendars because your backstage pass into Katy Perry's world has arrived!

Dick ("Total Recall"), plus a return visit to MIB headquarters.

Instead of making a splashy debut as a director, he wrote this grounded drama (along with partner Roberto Orci) about a man named Sam (Pine) who has to deliver $150,000 to a 30-year-old alcoholic sister he's never met. He encounters her troubled 12-year-old son and probably learns something about himself, too.

The Scoop: From the 3-D stop-motion geniuses at Laika -- the very patient animators who brought us "Coraline" -- comes this slab of spooky fun revolving around an outcast kid named Norman Babcock (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who communicates with the dead to protect his sleepy New England town from a horde of ghosts, witches and zombies. The trailers are awesome, with some incredible puppet animation and a hilarious "Monster House" vibe to the story.

The Woodman continues his globetrotting (London, Barcelona, France) with this trip to the boot of Europe as famous Italians (Benigni) mix with American tourists (Baldwin, Eisenberg, Page) in four interconnected comedic vignettes. Throw in an Academy Award-winning Spaniard (Cruz) and Allen himself, and you've got yourself a heaping plate of laughs al dente.

Only one way to find out, as Steven Soderbergh directs a beefcake wonderland eager to please. Whoa! Katy Perry Was Almost in 'The Help'?!

What would happen if, in an alternate universe, Katy Perry was in "The Help?" Would it have been like when you meet your doppelganger or when dogs and cats shack up together or something? The mind reels!

We'll never find out now, because pesky scheduling conflicts kept the blue-haired songstress from making her dramatic debut in this feel-good favorite. Seriously.

As she told Teen Vogue, "I wasn't going to be Emma Stone or anything — but I couldn't because the shooting schedule conflicted with the release of my record."

She was pretty bummed about it because she had a gut feeling that "it was going to be an important film," Perry told the teen mag. "Not that I need to do drama first, but I do want to do something that makes a strong impression. You don't really get off the hook being a musician first … I feel like the stakes are really high."

We'll always have "The Smurfs," right? Remember, when she was Smurfette? That totally happened.

And if you still want a gander at Katy Perry onscreen, you'll be able to see her in three amazing dimensions this July in her concern film, "Katy Perry: Part of Me." From religious teen to fireworks-popping dream, Perry will be doling out life details "like you're seeing it from my best friend-buddy perspective," as she told MTV.

We'll never get to see her take a bite of Minnie's special chocolate pie, but at least we'll be able to see her rock that Kathy Beth Terry headgear once again.

If Katy Perry's announcement over the weekend that her 3-D concert film "Katy Perry: Part of Me" is going to come out for the Fourth of July had you all atwitter — or even freaking out on Twitter — then we've got even better news for you, because America's top pop chanteuse has just released the first teaser trailer for "Katy Perry: Part of Me" as well.

You wanted a piece of Katy Perry? You got it!

So just what can we expect from "Katy Perry: Part of Me?" Well, naturally we'll be getting plenty of on stage musical performances, but judging by the trailer there will also be behind the scenes footage, personal, soul bearing interviews and rare family photos. In other words, everything true Perry fans has been waiting for.

Katy Perry's New 3-D Movie Is a 4th of July Party

For most Americans, nothing tops some good old fashion fireworks on the Fourth of July. But in the nearly two and a half centuries since America was born, we're guessing our nation's birthday has never seen a "Firework" display quite like the one Katy Perry is about to put on.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Katy Perry has announced the details of her upcoming 3-D concert film and the newly christened "Katy Perry: Part of Me" is set to hit theaters around the Fourth of July. George Washington would be so proud.

Of course, Perry didn't reveal the exact date of "Katy Perry: Part of Me's" theatrical release; you have to play these things close to the chest sometimes, especially when that chest has a tendency to fire off high intensity flares.

But Perry, who made the announcement during last night's 2012 Kids' Choice Awards on Nickelodeon, couldn't help teasing the notion of celebrating America's founding in the most American way possible: By making some serious money at the box office. "Go and see it and be a firework," she told the red carpet crowd, referring to her hit single "Firework."

Perry also teased the possibility of another appearance of her popular character from "The Smurfs," Smurfette, a performance which won her the Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Voice From an Animated Movie. "The only reason why I'm still here today is because I've never grown up," she said. "I can't wait to do 'Smurfs 2.'"

We can only imagine the fireworks display that occasion might inspire.
