In "The Hunger Games," the future of North America (called Panem) is grim. For proof, look no further than the titular televised battle to the death that the Capitol puts on for sport. Teens killing teens? Hilarious!

The shocking thing is that the post-apocalyptic future Katniss Everdeen inhabits is far from the bleakest or most bizarre dystopia in movie history. The following 15 movies teach us one basic truth: Be afraid, very afraid of the future -- particularly genetic mutations, man-made viruses, and nuclear holocausts.

1. '12 Monkeys' (1995)

Setting: 2035 America
Why the Future Sucks: Forty years after a man-made virus has wiped out 99 percent of the population, humans have escaped Earth's uninhabitable surface by living in locked underground chambers. Scientists figure out a way to send a convicted criminal (Bruce Willis) to the past to stop the disease, but with a set-up like that, what could go right? After his mission turns haywire, he discovers the truth behind the epidemic but can't prevent history from repeating itself and dooming humanity for a second time.

2. 'Blade Runner' (1982)

Setting: 2019 Los Angeles
Why the Future Sucks: It always rains. Angelenos speak a bizarre pidgin that suggests geopolitical cataclysm. And a powerful corporation rules the world with such impunity that it has created a race of robot slaves to mine distant moons, while secretly populating Earth with robots programmed to think they're human. Although L.A. is still habitable (though wet), and the world enjoys flying cars, the real future nightmare comes from the corporation's power to cause humans to doubt their own humanity.

3. 'The Book of Eli' (2010)

Setting: Post-apocalyptic America
Why the Future Sucks: Following a nuclear holocaust, bandits and warlords control the distribution of scarce food and water. Without protection from men, women face rape or attack. Most are illiterate thugs, except for Denzel Washington's Eli. A kickass loner unaffiliated with any of the roving gangs that menace him, Eli sets off to deliver his (and likely the last available) copy of the Bible to California, where he hopes some part of pre-war culture has survived.

4. 'Children of Men' (2006)

Setting: 2027 England
Why the Future Sucks: Humanity is in chaos after two decades of inexplicable, worldwide infertility. The United Kingdom clings to order with a xenophobic police state that rounds up, detains and deports anyone who isn't British while battling violent pro-immigrant terrorists. On the bright side, a West African refugee (Claire-Hope Ashitey) is mysteriously pregnant; but if a cynical bureaucrat (Clive Owen) can't ferry her to safety, the end of humanity seems inevitable.

5. 'Gattaca' (1997)

Setting: Near future, America
Why the Future Sucks: In the future, the elites are no longer conceived; they're selected according to their parents' best traits. These outstanding genetic specimens are the "valids," while babies created the old-fashioned way (with the attendant genetic failings) are the "invalids." Because eugenics restricts the opportunities available to invalids such as Vincent (Ethan Hawke), he impersonates a wheelchair-bound valid (Jude Law) to fulfill his dream of becoming an astronaut. Vincent’s love of a genetically superior woman (Uma Thurman), however, and his own DNA, nearly foil his plans.

6. 'I Am Legend' (2007)

Setting: 2012, New York City
Why the Future Sucks: Hooray, there's a cure for cancer!! Oops, the vaccine kills or zombifies everyone who's taken it. As the last man in New York and one of the last humans on the planet, virologist Lt. Colonel Robert Neville (Will Smith) watches reruns on TV, works out (look at his abs), goes big-game hunting in the ruins of Manhattan with his dog, and desperately tries to find a cure for the disease that's destroyed almost all of humanity.

7. 'Idiocracy' (2006)

Setting: 2505 America
Why the Future Sucks: An Army librarian (Luke Wilson) of average intelligence and a prostitute (Maya Rudolph) are selected for a suspended animation experiment in 2005 and awaken 500 years in the future. While they don’t wake to any killer diseases or nuclear wastelands, the future in Mike Judge's comedy is hilariously awful. The average IQ has plummeted, creating a society of consumer-obsessed fools lacking basis problem-solving skills, surrounded by material goods and mountains of garbage. Wilson emerges as literally the smartest person alive.

8. 'In Time' (2011)

Setting: 2161 America
Why the Future Sucks: A genetic mutation allows humans to age only until 25, at which point your "time" begins to run out. After 25, humans have a year to live, unless they can earn or borrow the new currency: time. When the timer hits zero, you fizzle out and die instantly. While there's something intriguing (and we'll admit, sexy) about everyone looking 25 no matter how old they really are, it's still a system where the rich live longer and the poor toil for every second.

9. 'The Island' (2005)

Setting: Near future, America
Why the Future Sucks: Clones live in isolation until they're needed by their "originals" in the real world. Imagine you're Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor), a clueless clone with that future. You're unhappy with your highly managed schedule and strictly controlled life when you discover that "winning the lottery" in your universe is really code for being killed or having your organs harvested. That's bound to ruin anyone's life – not to mention the other you.

10. 'Mad Max' (1979)

Setting: Future Australia
Why the Future Sucks: Dystopian life Down Under is just as bad as it is in the States or Great Britain -- well, except for the fact that you might catch a glimpse of a young, leather-clad Mel Gibson. You can trace the vengeful Gibson stereotype to this precise moment in history. As a police officer whose wife, baby and best friend are killed by a nefarious motorcycle gang, Gibson's Max becomes an unhinged antihero ready to do anything in the Australian wastelands to bring down perpetrators.

11. 'The Planet of the Apes' (1968)

Setting: 3978
Why the Future Sucks: After astronauts crash-land on a strange planet, they discover that the rulers are highly evolved apes who speak and act like humans, while humans are mute, primitive creatures who do little more than wear animal skins. Astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) struggles mightily to free himself from his damn dirty ape overloads and return to his home planet, but when he spies the ruins of the Statue of Liberty in the sand, it's clear that he's actually traveled in time to a simian-controlled Earth.

12. 'The Road' (2009)

Setting: The near future, America
Why the Future Sucks: Based on author Cormac McCarthy's bestselling novel, this depiction of the future might be the grimmest on the list. An unspecified catastrophe kills most of the animal and plant life on Earth, and those who are left behind resort to widespread murder and cannibalism to survive. Armed with only a handgun and two bullets, an unnamed father (Viggo Mortensen) and his tween son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) try to find a sanctuary while scrounging for food and evading roaming gangs of murderous cannibals.

13. 'Soylent Green' (1973)

Setting: 2022, New York City
Why the Future Sucks: As the movie's poster advertised, in the year 2022, "people are still the same, they'll do anything to get what they need," and what they need is more food produced by the Soylent Corporation. After the company introduces new food source Soylent Green, which contains "high energy plankton," the supply runs out, causing food riots in the overpopulated, over-polluted streets of New York. As it turns out, the secret ingredient in the Soylent Green wafer isn't plankton, but people.

14. 'V for Vendetta' (2005)

Setting: Near future, United Kingdom
Why The Future Sucks: Once again a nuclear disaster has decimated the Earth but left the United Kingdom relatively intact, although controlled by the totalitarian Norsefire government. As with all fascist societies, those aligned with the ruling party can do as they please (like try to rape innocent women walking around past curfew). The only source of dissent is led by a masked freedom fighter who blows up government buildings and his terrorized acolyte (Natalie Portman).

15. 'WALL-E' (2008)

Setting: 2805
Why the Future Sucks: In the distant future, we've accumulated so much trash, courtesy of the Buy n Large corporation, that Earth becomes uninhabitable. The only beings who remain are WALL-E, a robotic trash compacter who's oblivious to the futility of his programming, and his cockroach pal, Hal. Meanwhile, what remains of the human race -- rendered immobile by obesity and complacency -- travels on a spaceship and through the virtual world that tries to replace the planet they've thrown out.

Cillian Murphy Demands Your Time in Exclusive 'In Time' Deleted Scene

Roger Daltrey used to wish that "I hope I die before I get old." His wish would have been granted in the Justin Timberlake futuristic sci-fi movie "In Time," in which everyone older than 25 dies unless they can buy time, which has become the new commodity. ("Buy time"? Get it?)

In this exclusive deleted scene from the movie, Cillian Murphy slips on the villain mask once again to play timekeeper Raymond Leon, a cop who chases down stolen time. Here, he questions a woman over the suspicious amount of time she's displaying. "It was a gift," she tells the dubious Murphy, proving that time, indeed, is on her side.

Extras! Don't let the DVD/Blu-ray featurette title "Drive Without a Driver: Entretien Avec Nicolas Winding Refn" scare you away. It's not in subtitles and has director Refn explaining the laborious six-year process it took to bring "Drive" to the silver screen.
We Say: "Drive" is one of the best movies of 2011, so don't let the Academy's Oscar snub suggest otherwise. "Drive" could spark the next generation of action films, complete with memorable performances and a cutting-edge electro soundtrack as well as quiet, dramatic moments that other films in the genre fill with tiresome guns and bombast.

Storyline: In a dystopian future where the aging gene has been switched off, time is the currency traded to extend one's life beyond the allotted 25 years. We Say: If you loved Carpenter's film, this tense prequel meshes perfectly with it and features an impressive combination of practical and CGI creature effects as well as a welcome Ripley-like performance by Winstead.

Extras! "The Dream Cast" has Craig, Weisz and Watts -- all of whom we love in other roles -- explain their inexplicable attraction to this project.
We Say: Although you can feel the chemistry between Craig and Weisz that the couple took off-screen, this preposterous mystery with a snicker-worthy M. Night Shyamalan twist collapses like a house of cards.

Today's best styles don't usually play a role in sci-fi films. "In Time," however, is another story.

The film sets Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried in the not-so-distant future, where time literally is money, people stop aging at 25 and you have to fight for or buy every second of your life thereafter.

You might expect a concept to futuristic to mean crazy costumes a la Lady Gaga or something. However, the styles aren't so far from what we wear today. Everything looks a bit more polished and sterile, but still totally sleek and sexy by today's definition.

6 Clips Arrive Just 'In Time' for Justin Timberlake

Writer-director Andrew Niccol has made waves in the sci-fi genre exploring sociopolitical issues of obedience, genetics, and the nature of reality with mindbenders like "Gattaca," "S1m0ne" and the screenplay for "The Truman Show."

Now he's put his own twist on the "Logan's Run" concept of youth run amok in the new action thriller "In Time." Unlike with "Logan," where people over 25 die, in this film they just stop aging and live forever ... if they can afford it. Justin Timberlake plays Will Salas, a poor young man short on time who inherits a huge swath of immortality from an upper-class dude. When the corrupt timekeeping police force finds out, the manhunt begins.

Amanda Seyfried and her huge anime eyes costar, so check out all the young, futuristic hotness on display below.

1. Confusing Time. "Is she my mother, my sister, daughter? You're hoping she's not my wife." Geez, Vincent Kartheiser, this is starting to sound like an episode of "Mad Men."

Amanda Seyfried, Justin Timberlake and Olivia Wilde were just a few of the stars who made science fiction sexy again at the premiere of "In Time."

The good-looking young actors who appear in a movie about staying young and good-looking forever graced the red carpet at the Los Angeles event, which also featured an appearance by director Andrew Niccol and "S1m0ne" herself, Rachel Roberts. And can we just say that Matt Bomer needs to own that car?

But then you'd be missing what's sure to be one of fall's most acclaimed films, a drama equally as emotional as it is high-kicking and hard-swinging, about estranged brothers (Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton) who reunite in the most unusual of circumstances: in the cage at a high-stakes mixed martial arts showdown. His first of two prestige films this fall is the buzzed-about "Drive," in which he stars as a taciturn stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway man for local thieves. When things go sour, he finds himself in a race against time -- and unfortunately for time, racing is what he does best. Welcome to the superstar club, Ryan.

'Abduction'

Starring: Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins
The Scoop: Can Taylor Lautner thrive outside of "The Twilight Saga"? To which we say, does a werewolf have fleas? (That's rhetorical). The answer, provided by "Abduction," is a resounding yes as the abtacular teen idol jumps to the big leagues in a story about a kid who realizes his life is a lie when he sees his own face on a missing person's website. So who is behind the abduction? It's going to be a tricky one for Lautner to solve, because based on his "Twilight" fan base, he has about 50 million suspects.

'Moneyball'

Starring: Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman
The Scoop: We know what you're thinking: Watching a movie about baseball? Isn't that the only thing more boring than actually watching baseball itself? But we remind you that your average baseball game doesn't have Brad Pitt in it. And since this film -- about a general manager for the Oakland A's who overturns the traditions of the league and creates a whole new style of baseball in the process -- is a labor of love for Pitt, you can be sure that he and co-stars Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman have brought their A-game. Play ball!

'50/50'

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick
The Scoop: Is there anything funnier than cancer? Before you answer that, you might want to check out "50/50," which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a youngster who is diagnosed with The Big C. Seth Rogen plays his best bud, which is fitting considering Rogen co-wrote the movie with his real-life best bud, who also suffered from cancer. The result is both moving and surprisingly funny. And hey, how often do you get to see JGL shave his head on screen? See, even cancer has its upside.

The Scoop: It's not your imagination: Jessica Chastain has been in every single movie this year. Okay, that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but not by much; "Take Shelter" is one of six movies (along with the critically acclaimed "The Help" and "The Tree of Life") the emerging star headlines in 2011. This time she plays the beleaguered wife of a man ("Revolutionary Road" Oscar nom Michael Shannon) who has terrifying visions. Is he going mad? Or are his visions actually harbingers of the coming apocalypse? We trust Chastain to make yet another right decision.

'Dream House

Starring: Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts
The Scoop: We think it's probably safe to say that the title "Dream House" is intended to be somewhat ironic considering this movie is about a couple (Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz) who discover their new home is really, really, seriously haunted. Of course, the pair did end up getting married after this horror flick finished filming, so maybe this really was their "Dream House." For the rest of us, though, it's just a good old-fashioned haunted house movie. And in this age of overdone gimmicks, that really could be a dream come true.

'What's Your Number?'

Starring: Anna Faris, Chris Evans
The Scoop: Any excuse to see Anna Faris in action is a good excuse, but few have been quite as good as this one: "Number" features the "Scary Movie" star as a young woman who realizes she might have already met -- and dumped -- her dream guy. So she begins tracking down all of her exes to figure out which one of them was actually Mr. Right, which provides the perfect opportunity for everyone from Aziz Ansari to Andy Samberg to Zachary Quinto to provide cameos as the men in her past. Faris's number could be number one after this.

'The Ides of March

Starring: George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman
The Scoop: Nobody does smart films like George Clooney (see: "Syriana," "Good Night and Good Luck") and now he's back with perhaps his best effort yet. "The Ides of March" features Clooney (who also directs) as a presidential candidate with a dark secret. When his campaign director (Ryan Gosling) discovers that secret he must balance his ideology with the practical politics of winning at all costs. Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman help round out a brilliant cast. That smell in the air? That's the smell of award season approaching.

'Wanderlust'

Starring: Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd, Malin Akerman
The Scoop: Jennifer Aniston is kind of like the female Paul Rudd, so it's only fitting that Aniston and Rudd are teaming up here for this new rom-com about a posh New York couple who, forced by the economic downturn to move to the deep south, end up accidentally joining a hippie commune. Oh yeah, did we mention that it's written and directed by "Wet Hot American Summer" writer David Wain? And produced by, of course, Judd Apatow? Say no more.

'The Big Year

Starring: Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Steve Martin
The Scoop: The unexpected comedy dream team of Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson comes together for a film with an even more unexpected premise: Black and Martin play dudes who team up to take down Wilson in a cutthroat national bird watching championship. That's a real thing, believe it or not. Frankly, we'd watch these three sleep, so the fact that they are in a quirky, offbeat film like "The Big year" is just gravy.

'Footloose'

Starring: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid
The Scoop: It's the generational gap to end all generational gaps. Whether or not you remember leg warmers and Cabbage Patch Kids may determine whether or not you find the idea of a "Footloose" remake to be heresy. Still, we have high hopes that this updated version -- which shows how a rebellious teen (in this case Kenny Wormald) teaches an uptight town the joy of dancing -- will introduce a new generation to the fun of cutting footloose.

'Paranormal Activity 3'

Starring: These aren't actors, it's found footage!
The Scoop: The 1980s are the hottest thing going in Hollywood these days, so it's a real stroke of luck for the people behind the wildly popular "Paranormal Activity" horror franchise that the footage they've found this time happens to be on old VHS tapes from that decade. Those tapes also happen to show sisters Katie and Kristi as little girls -- little girls who innocently stumble upon an undying evil that will haunt their lives forever. What will they find next?!

'The Three Musketeers'

Starring: Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, Milla Jovovich
The Scoop: The classic Alexandre Dumas novel "The Three Musketeers" has been adapted for film umpteen times, so you're probably already familiar with the tale of the legendary band of French warriors and their motto, "all for one, one for all." But you probably haven't seen it like this before; after all, this time "Resident Evil" director Paul W.S. Anderson is at the helm, with his wife Milla Jovovich is co-starring as the sinister Milady de Winter. Add in the likes of Orlando Bloom and Christoph Waltz -- not to mention eye-popping 3-D -- and it's safe to say that this isn't your father's (or mother's) "Three Musketeers."

'The Rum Diary'

Starring: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart
The Scoop: Johnny Depp has been working for years to bring his buddy Hunter S. Thompson's novel "The Rum Diary to the big screen and darned if he hasn't finally done it. Of course, being the biggest movie star in the world doesn't hurt, either. Depp headlines the story of a journalist who ditches the mainland in favor of Puerto Rico where he begins drinking, carousing and keeping a detailed diary of his exploits. A rogue who guzzle rum? Captain Jack Sparrow would most definitely approve.

'In Time'

Starring: Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde
The Scoop: Justin Timberlake has been a force in pop culture for a long time now, but he still looks fresh as a daisy, which makes him the perfect person to star in "In Time." JT plays a guy living in a future where people are immortal -- if they are rich enough. If not, they "expire" at age 25. When he inherits a fortune, his future seems secure, but murder charges have a way of messing up even the best plan, so he goes on the run (along with co-star Amanda Seyfried). Will Timberlake achieve the same immortality on screen that his talents have already earned him off screen? Let's just say that the future looks bright.

'Like Crazy'

Starring: Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, Jennifer Lawrence
The Scoop: Anton Yelchin's fourth film of the year (following "The Beaver," "The Smurfs" and "Fright Night") may be his best of the year as well. Here the up-and-coming star plays a college student who falls in love with a foreign exchange student (Felicity Jones). When she overstays her visa, though, she gets strong-armed out of the country by government officials, turning their perfect romance into a perfect mess. Considering "Like Crazy" won the top prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival, though, their loss is everyone's gain.

This Just In: Justin Timberlake in First 'In Time' Trailer

Originally saddled with with the groovy title "I'm.mortal," the sci-fi thriller "In Time" affords all-around renaissance man his first chance to live out every young man's fantasy: running around with a gun and a hot chick.

That hot chick is his former "Alpha Dog" co-star Amanda Seyfried, but WHY they're running is a whole other kettle of fish explained by the first trailer courtesy of Cinema Blend.

In this new film from New Zealander Andrew Niccol, the mind-bending writer/director behind high-concept classics like "The Truman Show" and "Gattica," Timberlake plays a dude trying to make his way on the lower rungs of a future society where folks don't age, they just kinda run out of time.

See, time has become currency, and the rich get richer while the poor get dying-er.

When he unwittingly inherits a buttload of time off some wealthy dude (Alex Pettyfer), the corrupt cops known as "time keepers" (led by "28 Days Later" star Cillian Murphy) go after our hero with a vengeance. Olivia Wilde can also be seen running around for some reason.

All in all it looks like a clever satiric twist on the "Logan's Run" concept, and it is definitely trippy seeing a world where no one ages to the point where your wife and daughter both look the same age. Yikes! We just hope a newer version of the poster for the October 28 release utilizes this clever wordplay: justIN TIMbErlake.

First Look at Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried Arrives Just 'In Time'

Stepping behind the camera for the first time in six years is bound to be a bit stressful, but from the first peek at Andrew Nichol's upcoming sci-fi thriller "In Time," the director has this wild world totally under control.

Rope of Silicon has the first two photos from the futuristic adventure, where time is money. Literally. Time has become currency, allowing the rich to achieve immortality and never age past 25.

Starring Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde and Cillian Murphy, the film sure looks like it's going to be chock-full o' hotness—and industrial landscapes.

We've got JT in a suit, slinging a gun and looking pretty damn determined about something. And we've got Seyfried in some sort of futuristic cocktail dress with opera-length leather gloves (meow!) managing to appear equally scuffed up and wide-eyed.

Which is no surprise, since she's Timberlake's hostage. (Well, if you have to be someone's captive, you might as well be his.)

Formerly called "I'm.mortal" and "Now" before settling on the current title, "In Time" is scheduled to hit theaters October 28, but with Comic-Con fast-approaching (and the film showcasing there), hopefully a trailer will surface sooner than that.
