As the year draws to an end, we can't help but reflect on all the memorable movies and stand out performances of 2011. But nothing made our hearts skip a collective beat like the actors who scorched up the big screen with their scintillating romances this year.
Whether it was teen newlyweds who brought new meaning to the idea of everlasting love, best friends who finally gave in to their undeniable feelings or superheroes who couldn't resist the magnetic pull of attraction, these couples had it bad for each other, and we for them. Take a look at the 20 sexiest cinematic couples of 2011.
Sometimes life imitates art. Jamie Waylett, the actor famous for playing Draco Malfoy's "big-boned" bully sidekick Vincent Crabbe in six of the 'Harry Potter' films, finds himself facing a slew of charges — including possession of a homemade petrol bomb — linked to his involvement in the London riots over the summer.
The British authorities allege that the 22-year-old thesp armed himself with a Molotov cocktail with the intention of doing some serious damage during the fray.
Making matters even worse for Waylett, police discovered 15 cannabis plants in his bedroom, which wouldn't be such a big deal if he hadn't already been busted for growing marijuana back in 2009 — which led to him being written out of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2." (You'd think he'd have learned his lesson). Get More »
HP Day has arrived - "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" is here. And while hordes of wizard wannabes are happily queuing up to see the conclusion of a story they've inhabited for nigh-on 10 years, there may be some people out there who are curious as to what all the hullabaloo is about, and want to see what is likely to be the movie of the summer without having to sit through more than 14 hours of previous films.
Thankfully, animator Scott Coello has put together a recap video that sums up the entire saga in two-and-a-half minutes...after a fashion.
Sure, Coello's clip KIND OF gives us the story in a nutshell, but it's more hilarious than informative, filled with insane commentary (like denoting that spells in JK Rowling's wizarding world sound like you're ordering food), ridiculous sound effects, and the occasional piercing observation (like the fact that they gave the line "Black could be anywhere" in "Prisoner of Azkaban" to one of Hogwarts', like, three black students). So you're going to see "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" on Thursday at midnight, eh?
Midnight showings of big movies are sometimes bigger spectacles than the films themselves. It's midnight, after all, and that's a time when things are prone to getting a little... well, crazy. And more than a little weird. And most definitely passionate.
It's worth it to take part in such an event. Moviegoing experiences come and go, but you'll cherish the memories of a midnight screening forever.
Here's just a few tips to keep in mind before you embark on your adventure:
"Harry Potter" character Luna Lovegood seems to live in her own world, but the actress who plays her in the hit films is clearly focused on the Muggle world.
Evanna Lynch, who stars as the saucer-eyed Hogwarts student, has joined the Harry Potter Alliance "Not in Harry's Name" campaign to ensure that Harry Potter chocolate is not made by child slaves (or elves, for that matter).
“As an actor in the Harry Potter films and as a lifelong fan of the Harry Potter series, it would give me great satisfaction to know that chocolate sold in Harry’s name is consistent with the values in Harry Potter,” said Lynch. "If we do not act in a way that is moral toward cocoa farmers now by ensuring that chocolate is fair trade, we will all pay a price in the future.” Get More »
The cast of the "Harry Potter" franchise has been such an ubiquitous presence in our lives that it's hard to believe nearly 10 (count 'em, 10!) years have gone by since we first met Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." The trio were just wide-eyed schoolkids and we've watched them blossom into three attractive and talented actors.
We've heard how they got their Harry Potter jobs over and over again -- how Grint filmed himself rapping to convince producers he was Ron Weasley, that Watson was recommended by her acting teacher and Radcliffe (a veteran of BBC productions) needed to overcome his parents to try for the part. We knew you liked Johnny Depp -- really, who doesn't? -- but we didn't predict you liked him this much.
When we launched our Summer Movie Mega-Poll a few weeks ago, we hoped to get to the bottom of some really important issues, like what movie you're most looking forward to this summer and who's sexier, Ryan Reynolds or Chris Evans. What we found was that you really love that Depp guy. He topped that sexiest list -- beating both Reynolds and Evans -- and proved the main reason you're going to see "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."
But Depp's not the only one who made an impact. The magic man himself, Harry Potter, also fared rather well.
Without further ado, here are the full results of our summer movie poll. Thanks to all for playing! Get More »
The last Harry Potter movie arrives in theaters on July 15, and you can bet Potterites are already champing at the bit to see whether Harry wins, if Ron and Hermione end up together forever and if Voldemort gets his nose back.
But what if you want to be a part of one of the summer's biggest movie events but don't want to invest approximately 20 hours of your time catching up? Comics artist Lucy Knisley has the answer. Get More »
We may be muggles, but we don't have to dress like them.
Not everything in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" is so magical that we can't have them as well. Hermione's red dress, Dark Mark tattoos and all the cozy sweaters are totally within our reach and our budgets.
Don't believe us? Accio "Harry Potter" fashion!
Even the panic we feel at the rapidly-approaching end of the "Harry Potter" era couldn't dampen our enthusiasm for meeting the cast at last week's "Harry Potter: The Exhibition" event.
Just in time for the release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" on DVD and Blu-ray -- and mere months before the eighth and final film hits theaters -- we asked Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright), Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), Professor Flitwick (Warwick Davis) and more to pick their favorite moments from the series and describe the strangest fans in all of Pottermania.
