The first (and most obvious) is the dancing -- Julianne Hough and Kenny Wormald are at the pinnacle of the dance world and their moves put the '80s moves to shame. Even when they're doing the same moves.

The very same can be said of the fashion. While the new "Footloose" takes its cues from the original -- Ariel's amazing boots are appropriately amazing -- it also improves on them. Wormald's Ren dresses the way you try to get your boyfriend to dress. Ariel puts the sexy in small, country town.

Updating a classic can be treacherous, like building a strip mall on hallowed ground; but director Craig Brewer ("Hustle & Flow") avoided the dreaded "High School Musical" route for his remake of "Footloose."

Fans will be relieved to hear that two of the original songs made the cut. Some other adjustments include having four very different dance sequences, and demolition derby buses instead of tractors. Brewer also anchored the script by fleshing out a backstory in which five Bomont teens were tragically killed after a night of dancing and loud music.

But the best upgrade to "Footloose" is the casting of professional dancers in the two lead roles. Everybody loves '80s dance movies, but come on, back then it was super-obvious whenever they swapped Kevin Bacon or Jennifer Beals with their wig-wearing dance doubles.

Wormald as Ren McCormack: You can thank Justin Timberlake for this one. The music superstar recommended Wormald to his "Black Snake Moan" director after Wormald danced in Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveShow tour in 2007. Since "Footloose" catapulted the career of Kevin Bacon in 1984 -- the same year Wormald was born -- Brewer always felt that the role of Ren should go to a newcomer. Wormald already had a thick Massachusetts accent, so Brewer simply swapped Ren’s hometown from Chicago to Boston. Expect to see Wormald (and his sinuous athletic body) kill it in the "angry dance" warehouse scene.

Where You’ve Seen Her: ABC’s "Dancing With the Stars," "Burlesque"

Hough as Ariel Moore: This triple threat beat out Hayden Panettiere, Miley Cyrus and Amanda Bynes to fill Ariel’s red cowboy boots. Hough (pronounced "Huff") came from a religious Southern family, so she could easily relate to the wild and rebellious preacher’s daughter. Her Ariel is more vulnerable than ever, especially in those daddy-daughter scenes. Frankly, Hough doesn't have too tough a job replacing Lori Singer, who was known at the time as little more than the poor man’s Daryl Hannah.

Teller as Willard: Last year, Teller wowed critics with his feature debut opposite Nicole Kidman in "Rabbit Hole." Teller steals many a scene as Willard, Ren’s country friend who learns to dance, and audiences in preview screenings have responded strongly to his sweet and funny portrayal. Interestingly enough, this is not Teller’s first crack at the endearing role played so memorably by the late Chris Penn. During his sophomore year, Teller made his acting debut as Willard in a high school production.

Colon as Rusty: In her largest role to date, Colon is all sassy smiles and curly locks as Ariel’s best friend, not unlike SJP from the first film. But her being of Puerto Rican descent helps inject some much-needed diversity into the all-white original cast. Expect Colon’s Rusty to be a lot smarter, tougher, and more kick ass this time, while still looking adorable saying lines like, "sexier than socks on a rooster."

Where You’ve Seen Him: ABC Family’s "Jane by Design," "All My Children"

Blain as Woody: The part of Woody did not exist in the previous "Footloose," but Brewer decided that Ren and Willard needed another dude friend to complete the bro-triangle. So instead of the odd couple from the first film, you have a small posse of three friends who navigate the krunk dancing scene in Bomont, teach Willard to dance and help Ren make his own personal prom a success. Blain is an actor/model/singer enjoying his biggest breakthrough role to date.

Seventeen years after the original "Footloose" inspired audiences around the world to kick off their Sunday shoes, Craig Brewer's "Footloose" remake arrives in theaters this Friday, October 14.

Although Brewer and his filmmaking forebear, Herbert Ross, share an affection for music-driven movies, it remains to be seen whether the director of "Hustle & Flow" and "Black Snake Moan" will go on to Ross's highs of "The Secret of My Success," or the lows of "Undercover Blues."

In the meantime, we took a look at both theatrical versions of this iconic story in order to see what they have in common, and where Brewer might have cut a little bit loose.

The Location: Although both films are set in a town called Bomont, the '84 film takes place in Utah, which actually has a town with that name, while the '11 film relocates the conflict to the South, fabricating a Bomont, Georgia.

The Main Character: In both versions, Ren McCormack is a high school senior who relocates from "the big city" to a small town. Played in '84 by Kevin Bacon and in '11 by Kenny Wormald, Ren is no troublemaker, but nevertheless has trouble adjusting to his new settings, especially after he attracts the attention of a cute classmate named Ariel and her preacher father, who presides over the townspeople like a benevolent dictator. That said, Ren is from Boston in the '11 film instead of Chicago, and arrives in town after the death of his mother, whereas his mom is there with him in the original.

His Love Interest: Ariel (Lori Singer in '84, Julianne Hough in '11) is a small-town girl whose rebellious attitude towards her father hides a deep well of pain over the loss of her older brother, who died a few years before in the accident that inspired Bomont to institute uncompromising rules like no dancing and no loud music. Both young women "aren't even a virgin," and can take a punch as well as they dish it out. And both look pretty terrific in a pair of tight jeans, or an off-the-shoulder, peach-colored prom dress.

Her Father: Reverend Moore (John Lithgow/Dennis Quaid) is a monolithic minister who does not hold office but nonetheless exerts considerable influence over the townspeople. Like his daughter Ariel, he's driven by the accidental death of his son and, also like her, goes a little overboard when it comes to meting out paternal advice. Although Lithgow's Moore is more hellfire and brimstone than Quaid's self-righteous, folksy alternative, the former actually proved more evenhanded in his depiction of a man living by the Good Book but having to deal with a daughter with common sense.

The Sidekicks: In the '84 film, Chris Penn and Sarah Jessica Parker play Willard and Rusty, a couple of nerdy small-town kids who find their lives changed forever -- and of course for the better -- by Ren's appearance. Played by Miles Teller and Ziah Colon in the remake, the characters are remarkably the same, although Rusty is a stand-in for all of Ariel's friends from the first one, not just one of them. And while she actually resembles Sarah Jessica Parker enough to be a physical stand-in as well, kudos to Brewer and his casting agent for putting a young woman of color in the film, which makes her sweetly innocent romance with Willard interracial.

The Villain: Chuck Cranston is a little older, and a lot dumber, than most of the crazy kids in this mixed-up world. But he has good looks and the forbidden allure of being older, even if in the new film (as played by John Patrick Flueger) he's more conspicuously grown up (he already graduated and races cars for a living).

The Plot: Exactly like the '84 version, "Footloose" follows the adventures of Ren as he becomes an unlikely rebel against the unreasonably strict rules imposed by the town elders of Bomont. Despite being a gymnast and a good student, he is unfairly vilified after another student plants a joint on him, but he makes an impassioned speech to the town elders at the film's climax in which he insists to them that now "is our time," and therefore they should rescind the rule about public dancing and let the kids shake their butts in a good, upstanding fashion.

The Look: Director Craig Brewer re-creates almost every detail from the original that made it distinctive, from the font used over the opening credits to the provincial but not totally close-minded town where the story is set. While many of the clothes are appropriately updated, there are a handful of nods to the first film, especially when Ren ends up in a wifebeater, boogieing alone in an abandoned warehouse, and when Ariel goes out one night in a very similar dress to the one that her predecessor wore.

The Cutting Loose, Footloose: Both films feature a lot of dancing, but what's most surprising about the '11 "Footloose" is that its dance choreography is in many cases almost exactly the same as in the original. Ren's warehouse punch-dancing follows almost all of the same beats as in the original, and the other sequences largely follow the narrative and dance rhythms of their predecessors, although the filmmakers wisely updated the club sequence to include some country line dancing. But if you wanted a second, liberated end-credits dancing sequence where the cast and crew are able to completely get down, then you've come to the right place.

Seems someone finally took our order for a "Footloose" remake, extra hot, hold the Bacon.

Now a cast led by Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough have kicked off their Sunday shoes and are dancing like they've never danced before! Wait, that last one was "Flashdance" ... whatever.

In a modern-day reimagining of the 1984 film, Wormald takes over the Kevin Bacon role of Ren McCormack, a rebellious city boy who moves to a podunk town where dancing and rock music are banned. Dennis Quaid costars as the reverend who doesn't like to cut loose so much, and Hough as the reverend's daughter with the shortest shorts this side of the "30-Second Film Festival."

1. Nice Tie. "It's Ariel, like 'The Little Mermaid' but bitchier."

2. Willard (Miles Teller) explains the town laws against dancing, skipping, whistling, humming quietly and eating corn-on-the-cob without a bib.

3. During this line dance the cast had to be told whether they were remaking "Footloose" or "Thelma and Louise."

4. Your Father Is Here. Reverend Shaw lives out every father's dream of watching his little girl grind on some lowlife in a parking lot.

How many degrees away from Kevin Bacon are you if you play his character almost 30 years later? Kenny Wormald, who is kicking off his Sunday shoes as Ren McCormack in the remake of 1984's "Footloose," is about to find out. The new "Footloose" opens this Friday and costars Julianne Hough from "Dancing With the Stars," Dennis Quaid and Andie MacDowell.

Age: 27 (the exact same age as the original "Footloose")

What He's Done: Wormald danced his way into Paramount's hearts through nerve-wracking open auditions. Before this, he starred in 2008's "Center Stage: Turn It Up," shook his groove thang in a number of music videos, and even toured with Justin Timberlake and the Pussycat Dolls as a backup dancer.

What He's Doing Now: Wormald's Ren is a big-city boy with little-city blues in Bomont, where no one is allowed to dance or listen to rock 'n' roll or have any fun ever, ever, ever! Luckily, Ren is there to shake things up and show them how to get down. Oh, and woo the local reverend's daughter, played by Julianne Hough of "Dancing With the Stars," "Burlesque," and "Rock of Ages."

Reminds Us of: A less pouty James Dean, a 21st century Kevin Bacon, or a freshly showered Skeet Ulrich.

Fun Facts: Wormald told Details he realized his true calling at a New Kids on the Block concert on his sixth birthday.

Quotable: About the "Dirty Dancing" rumors and whether or not he'd take the gig, he said, "I don't know, man. You can only p*ss off so many soccer moms in one year."

Shout Out: "The best thing we did was to go to a sincere person," director Craig Brewer told HitFix. "That sounds funny, but that's the truth. What's Next: There's nothing set in stone for this young padawan, but the rumor mill is buzzing that he might take on another iconic role that requires filling some big dance shoes: Johnny Castle (the role originally played by Patrick Swayze) in a remake of "Dirty Dancing." We've been hearing about the "Footloose" remake for so long that it's kind of hard to believe it's finally here. But yes, it's now officially a real live movie, and Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Victoria Justice, Patrick John Flueger and even Kenny Loggins himself were at the L.A. premiere to mark the occasion. Dennis Quaid, who plays the dance-hating Rev. Moore, was, somewhat appropriately, not present.

"Everybody cut, everybody cut. Everybody cut, everybody cut. Everybody cut ... FOOTLOOSE."

With that clarion call, Kenny Loggins sent a generation of teenagers into spasms of what approximated dancing in the 1980s. The soundtrack to the 1984 film "Footloose" made almost as much of a pop culture impact as the movie itself, and tracks like the title song, "Almost Paradise," and "Let's Hear It For the Boy" were ubiquitous at middle school dances and roller rinks throughout America.

Now, we're on the verge of a "Footloose" remake, this time transplanted from the Midwest to the South. The movie looks ... well, interesting ... but can a remade soundtrack be as big of a draw as a remade film? We're not so sure, but that doesn't mean the "Footloose" soundtrack isn't worth checking out.

To go along with the geographical changes of the film, "Footloose" has countrified the music. Nowhere is this more evident than in the title track, which was covered by "The Voice" judge and country superstar Blake Shelton. Surprisingly, it's not a bad transition, as Shelton's version has a rougher edge than Loggins' polished '80s version. Jana Kramer's take on "Let's Hear It For the Boy" is also a lot of fun, retaining the silly-funky spirit of the 1984 original while making it definitively more modern.

Other holdovers don't fare as well. Ella Mae Bowen turns the in-your-face "I Need a Hero" into something dirge-ish, and her voice is auto-tuned within an inch of its life. Victoria Justice and Hunter Hayes make out better with their twangy version of "Almost Paradise," but it lacks the power that artists like Heart's Ann Wilson were able to put into the original.

Fortunately, it's not all nostalgia here. Shelton's "The Voice" costar Cee Lo Green and Kenny Wayne Shepherd team up for an excellent take on legendary bluesman Robert Johnson's "Walkin' Blues," and music from artists such as Big & Rich and David Banner round things out.

You have to give the folks behind the soundtrack props for touching on the classic elements of the original "Footloose" while still putting their own, countryish spin on them. Whether or not you enjoy this new take will depend on your tolerance for country, your fondness for the original film, and whether or not you're a teenager -- on the inside or out.

This Friday, a special sneak preview of "Footloose" will be screened for lucky fans in 25 select cities around the continent. Now there's a real reason to dance.

We think it's pretty cool -- and so does "Footloose" star Kenny Wormald, who is so jacked about the pre-release and his current tour to support "Footloose" that he's begun posting exclusive video diaries over at MTV's Hollywood Crush. Every generation has a story about rebellious teens who rise up and challenge the oppressive adults threatening to extinguish their youthful fun. Not surprisingly, the Reagan Era had more of these movies than most, and 1984's "Footloose" was the most contagious of them all, with its energetic, hits-filled soundtrack featuring the maddeningly catchy title song by Kenny Loggins.

Kevin Bacon stars as Ren McCormack, a Chicago teen who moves with his mother to the small town of Bomont in what appears to be Utah, where the film was shot. Bomont is a repressed Christian community under the influence of Reverend Shaw Moore (John Lithgow), a rousing orator who has convinced his congregation that rock music is the Devil's work and that dancing should remain banned in Bomont.

At school, Ren's urban flair (he wears skinny ties!) makes him a target, but he holds his own and quickly finds a wingman in Willard (Chris Penn). Ren has eyes for Reverend Shaw's daughter, Ariel (Lori Singer, in a role that was initially considered for Madonna), a rebellious adrenaline junkie who -- out of boredom or because of some undiagnosed hyperactivity disorder -- likes to crawl between cars while traveling at high speeds and stand in front of approaching trains. Ren can't get enough of this country-bred wildcat, and soon he is on a large tractor playing chicken opposite Ariel's boyfriend in some kind of backwoods mating contest. Before long, Ren, Ariel, Willard and Ariel's friend Rusty (Sarah Jessica Parker) are sneaking out of town to shake their stuff at a dance hall the next town over.

As frustrated as the indigenous teens are about the town's ban on rock music and dancing, Ren makes an appeal to the city council for a school dance, cleverly appealing to the town's Bible thumpers by citing passages in the Good Book that reference dancing. Slowly Reverend Shaw loosens up to Ren's proposal and can even be seen dancing with his wife (Dianne Wiest) outside an old grain mill, where the prom is going full tilt and a community of teens dances off years of pent-up energy.

It's no coincidence that Paramount is releasing "Footloose" on Blu-ray for the first time weeks before the remake opens in theaters. We're not sure how successful the new movie will be in capturing the spirit of a generation, but we're pretty certain the remake won't contain the totally awesome '80s montages that the original had. In the first montage, Bacon, alone in a barn, whips himself into a herky-jerky dance frenzy out of sheer frustration, complete with flashbacks of all the images haunting his head. The second montage -- an extended sequence in which Bacon takes the late Penn all over the countryside to teach his best bud how to dance -- is the stuff of true bromance and comes from an innocence the remake will be hard pressed to replicate.

The name of the movie may be "Footloose," but if the new exclusive clip on Hollywood Crush is any indication, feet are about to take a back seat to butts, hips and the other parts of the body collectively known as "your money maker."

This is definitely not your dad's "Footloose," because not only is there no sign of Huey Lewis anywhere to be heard, the new dance moves -- which features stars Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough doing the pants-on pseudo-nasty in front of a crowd of titillated onlookers -- make Kevin Bacon look like Nerdly J. Poindexter.

So check it out over on Hollywood Crush. Because these kids weren't kidding when they said they had to cut loose.

Rebooting an iconic film isn't such an easy thing to do — but with country crooner Blake Shelton and choreography guru Jamal Sims on board for "Footloose," it gets a whole lot easier, especially when both creative forces are committed to keep the hometown vibe of the original while adding their own modern twist.

Or something like that.

In any case, it comes as no surprise that Shelton's new version of Kenny Loggins' aptly titled hit, "Footloose," captures the country soul of the 1984 chart-topper.

While Shelton knows he wasn't the first choice for the song (the powers-that-be had been gunning for a female voice this time around), he campaigned for himself and "whined about it enough" (his words, not ours) until they let him cut it. According to The Boot, Sheldon describes the resulting song as "a fun, uptempo, catchy version just like Kenny Loggins did."

We've gotta admit, it has just enough spunk to make you want to get up and dance, which, we're pretty sure, is the point. (Hear it for yourself at The Boot).

As for the dancing on-screen, "Step Up" choreographer Jamal Sims took charge, the L.A. Times reports. Staying right in step with Shelton, Sims added updated dance moves, but preserved the "Southern homeyness" of the original. In other words, this is not "Glee."

And that's a good thing, because the key to this reboot's success may lie in its homage to the original. Keep up the good work, boys.

Starring in: "Restless" (September 16)
So Fresh: When your dad is the late Dennis Hopper, you're pretty much born cool; but Henry's first film as a bona fide grown-up proves he's not messing around with any fluffy stuff. Hopper costars with Mia Wasikowska as Enoch and Annabel, two damaged lovebirds in this multiple hanky film from the esteemed Gus Van Sant. This isn't your typical Nicholas Sparks romantic drama. Annabel has cancer and three months to live, and death-obsessed Enoch's best friend is Hiroshi, the ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot. "Restless" drips cool, from Wasikowska's pixie haircut to the delicate, tinkly score from Danny Elfman. Put Hopper down on your "to watch" list of arty young actors with a fabulous future ahead of them.

Lily Collins

Starring in: "Abduction" (September 23)
So Fresh: Lily Collins first grabbed our attention in "The Blind Side," and since then, the offers have been rolling in. She's got plenty of projects lined up, like the starring role in Tarsem Singh's upcoming Snow White film and the adaptation of YA hit "The Mortal Instruments," but her first starring role is opposite hunky lycanthrope Taylor Lautner in this fast-paced thriller. Lautner, her rumored ex-beau, has told press peeps, "There is an intense steamy scene," although things stay rather PG-13. Speaking of supernatural critters, she also narrowly escaped getting vamped out in "Priest" with Paul Bettany and another "Twilight"-er, Cam Gigandet. Looks like she's done with those feel-good Sandra Bullock flicks for now.

Juno Temple

Starring in: "Dirty Girl" (October 7)
So Fresh: Juno Temple is already known across the pond for her role in the wicked schoolgirl romp "St. Trinian's" and its sequel, but her star began to rise here in the U.S. with help from super-hip Gregg Araki's sexy sci-fi film "Kaboom." Her breakout role in "Dirty Girl" is hilarious and sassy, all set to an excellent '80s soundtrack. It's the tale of a girl on the loose, looking for who she is in the world, along with her gay best friend and their "baby," a sack full of flour named Joan (after Jett and Crawford, naturally). A road trip flick that's surprisingly sweet, "Dirty Girl" is just a taste of things to come for Temple, who switches neatly between indies like "Little Birds" and "Jack and Diane" and blockbusters like "The Three Musketeers" and "The Dark Knight Rises."

Starring in: "Footloose" (October 14)
So Fresh: This dancin' fool is no joke when it comes to fancy footwork, which is a good thing since he has some big shoes to fill in this remake. Taking on the role of Ren McCormack puts Wormald about half a degree away from Kevin Bacon, who got a big career boost from the role in the 1984 original. (Which, by the way, was the year Wormald was born!) Wormald will have to bring some bite to the role, too, as director Craig Brewer is known for films like "Hustle and Flow" and "Black Snake Moan." What's next for young Wormald? If "Footloose" takes off, the sky -- or the stage or screen -- is the limit.

Starring in: "Footloose" (October 14)
So Fresh: The Ariel to Wormald's Ren, Hough has busted a move for years on "Dancing With the Stars." This two-time winner rumba-ed her way to number one with speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno and even managed to get Adam Carolla to do the tango. After "Footloose," we'll be seeing Hough in the film adaptation of the rock 'n' roll stage musical "Rock of Ages" as the lead Sherrie Christian; she joins a wild cast that includes Tom Cruise, Malin Akerman, Bryan Cranston, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Alec Baldwin and other big names. It looks like Hough's dancing feet will be taking her far.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Starring in: "The Thing" (October 14)
So Fresh: In this prequel to John Carpenter's terrifying 1982 movie, Winstead takes a flamethrower to her "Scott Pilgrim" alter ego Ramona Flowers, not to mention a whole buttload of slimy, gooey, awful aliens. While we loved Ramona's cool style and multicolored hair, it's great to see Winstead as a parka-wearing scientist caught in the middle of an increasingly horrific situation. (Not to mention that Carpenter's "The Thing" was all dudes, all the time.) We'll be seeing more of Winstead next summer as Mary Todd Lincoln in Timur Bekmambetov's big screen adaptation of "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," alongside Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper, and Anthony Mackie. So protect your neck -- Ms. Winstead's coming.

Logan Lerman

Starring in: "The Three Musketeers" (October 21)
So Fresh: The boy behind Percy Jackson's adventures is growing up before our eyes. Although there's at least one more "Percy Jackson" movie in store for Lerman, he's making a 3-D splash this October in Paul W.S. Anderson's action-adventure extravaganza "The Three Musketeers." As D'Artagnan, Lerman will be slicing and dicing his way through France, accompanied by the lovely Gabriella Wilde as Constance and shoulder-to-shoulder with Ray Stevenson, Matthew Macfadyen and Luke Evans as the Three Musketeers. Aforementioned up-and-comer Juno Temple stars as Queen Anne, and Temple's "Dirty Girl" costar Milla Jovovich will be kicking butt in a corset as M'lady De Winter. Lerman also stars in the YA fave "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" alongside Emma Watson and Ezra Miller, which will hit theaters in 2012.

Starring in: "Martha Marcy May Marlene" (October 21)
So Fresh: While some Sundance "It" Girls don't catch fire, there's no question that Olsen is hot, hot, hot. "Martha Marcy May Marlene" (or as we like to call it, "MMMM") is a tightly wound thriller about a young woman who gets caught up in a creepy cult, complete with a Charles Manson-like figure played by the extraordinary John Hawkes. Once she leaves, her real life is haunted by memories that leave her confused and disturbed; plus, her sister and brother-in-law are utterly perplexed by her bizarre and unexplained behavior. "MMMM" is total Oscar Bait ™, but Olsen already has more projects to come. And she did it without a lick of help from her older sisters MK and Ashley.

Felicity Jones

Starring in: "Like Crazy" (October 28)
So Fresh: Felicity Jones took home the Special Jury Prize at Sundance for her role in this heart-wringing drama about long distance love. "Like Crazy" had critics and festivalgoers sniffling about the back-and-forth relationship between Anna (Jones) and Jacob (Anton Yelchin) as they try and figure out how to make their international love work. Distance isn't their only problem, though, once Anna gets booted from the U.S. for visa problems. Crossed wires, mixed messages, text messages and missed phone calls over the years will have you rooting for this couple to make it work despite it all. There's plenty more coming down the pipeline for this "Tempest"-uous actress, so even if Anna and Jacob can't work it out, we'll be seeing more of Ms. Jones for years to come.

Henry Cavill

Starring in: "Immortals" (November 11)
So Fresh: Cavill was "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer's first choice for Edward Cullen, and although she later decided he was perhaps a little long in the tooth for the high school vamp, his career is still sparkling bright. After a slew of roles in films and on TV, Cavill will be front and center in Tarsem Singh's 3-D mythical extravaganza about Theseus's fight against gnarly King Hyperion. There'll be nary a shirt in sight and plenty of fighting in this film that Singh has described as "Caravaggio meets 'Fight Club.'" No pressure, Henry. Fans are already scrutinizing his Superman outfit for "Man of Steel" as we write this -- where are his trunks? Where are they?! -- and by the time he whips off his Clark Kent glasses in 2013, the world won't know what hit 'em.

Asa Butterfield

Starring in: "Hugo" (November 23)
So Fresh: How many kids can say that their first starring role was under a legendary director like Martin Scorsese, in a fantastical story surrounded by a star-studded cast? Not many, that's for sure. Based on the book by Brian Selznick, "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," this film is bursting at the seams with all kinds of delicious, steam-punky weirdness that has fans of the book and movie-lovers alike chomping at the bit. Described by Selznick as an "orphan, clock keeper, and thief," Hugo is sure to be Butterfield's breakout role, especially alongside actors like Chloe Moretz, Jude Law, Emily Mortimer, Ray Winstone, Ben Kingsley and Christopher Lee. Plus, Scorsese will have tons of fun with all of the film and historical references Selznick packed in there. Mark this down as a must-see.

Starring in: "New Year's Eve" (December 9)
So Fresh: Michele made a splash in the Broadway hit "Spring Awakening," but it looks like this "Glee"-ful gal has set her sights on the big screen. Remember "Valentine's Day"? Well, Garry Marshall's revisiting the whole intertwining-ensemble-holiday thing for "New Year's Eve," where Michele will sing with Jon Bon Jovi and apparently score a midnight kiss in Times Square from Ashton Kutcher. Sure, NYC nights are pretty exciting, but that's a lot for anyone to handle. Michele is also putting her pretty pipes to work for "Dorothy of Oz," the 3-D animated film that picks up where "The Wizard of Oz" left off.

Starring in: "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" (December 16)
So Fresh: This tiny Swede rocked our world as the fierce androgynous hacker Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and its sequels with her mad skills and bad attitude. She'll be making her English-language debut this December as a French gypsy opposite Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, whose bromance is elementary. This big-budget Warner Bros. vehicle will shuttle us straight into the holidaze. Not enough Noomi? She'll be taking on some outer space critters in Ridley Scott's 2012 movie "Prometheus," which takes place in the famous Giger-esque universe of "Alien."

Starring in: "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" (December 21)
So Fresh: Speak of the (dragon-tattooed) devil! The girl who gave Mark Zuckerberg an earful in "The Social Network" has some more sass to dole out as Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's remake of the Swedish smash hits. Mara had some serious competition for the role, but she managed to convince the finicky Fincher she was the perfect pick. Judging by the trailer and stark photos, including her incredible shoot for W magazine, we'd guess she's right.

Starring in: "War Horse" (December 28)
So Fresh: Steven Spielbeg is pretty much the man, and being hand-selected by him to star in an obviously Oscar-tastic film is like having a little tiny crown deposited on your head by an angel. An angel who makes careers. Irvine stars as Albert, a kid whose best friend is sent to France to fight in the first World War. Albert's BFF, however, is a horse named Joey, so it's not like things are going to go all that well for him in the war, right? Expect lots of "Saving Private Ryan"-style war stuff, heart-tugging animal love (the platonic kind), and a veddy impressive British cast.

But then you'd be missing what's sure to be one of fall's most acclaimed films, a drama equally as emotional as it is high-kicking and hard-swinging, about estranged brothers (Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton) who reunite in the most unusual of circumstances: in the cage at a high-stakes mixed martial arts showdown. The Scoop: Can Taylor Lautner thrive outside of "The Twilight Saga"? To which we say, does a werewolf have fleas? (That's rhetorical). The answer, provided by "Abduction," is a resounding yes as the abtacular teen idol jumps to the big leagues in a story about a kid who realizes his life is a lie when he sees his own face on a missing person's website. So who is behind the abduction? It's going to be a tricky one for Lautner to solve, because based on his "Twilight" fan base, he has about 50 million suspects.

The Scoop: We know what you're thinking: Watching a movie about baseball? Isn't that the only thing more boring than actually watching baseball itself? And since this film -- about a general manager for the Oakland A's who overturns the traditions of the league and creates a whole new style of baseball in the process -- is a labor of love for Pitt, you can be sure that he and co-stars Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman have brought their A-game. Play ball!

'50/50'

The Scoop: Is there anything funnier than cancer? Before you answer that, you might want to check out "50/50," which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a youngster who is diagnosed with The Big C. Seth Rogen plays his best bud, which is fitting considering Rogen co-wrote the movie with his real-life best bud, who also suffered from cancer. The result is both moving and surprisingly funny. And hey, how often do you get to see JGL shave his head on screen? See, even cancer has its upside.

'Take Shelter'

Starring: Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain
The Scoop: It's not your imagination: Jessica Chastain has been in every single movie this year. Okay, that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but not by much; "Take Shelter" is one of six movies (along with the critically acclaimed "The Help" and "The Tree of Life") the emerging star headlines in 2011. This time she plays the beleaguered wife of a man ("Revolutionary Road" Oscar nom Michael Shannon) who has terrifying visions. Is he going mad? Or are his visions actually harbingers of the coming apocalypse? We trust Chastain to make yet another right decision.

'Dream House

Starring: Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts
The Scoop: We think it's probably safe to say that the title "Dream House" is intended to be somewhat ironic considering this movie is about a couple (Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz) who discover their new home is really, really, seriously haunted. Of course, the pair did end up getting married after this horror flick finished filming, so maybe this really was their "Dream House." For the rest of us, though, it's just a good old-fashioned haunted house movie. And in this age of overdone gimmicks, that really could be a dream come true.

'What's Your Number?'

Starring: Anna Faris, Chris Evans
The Scoop: Any excuse to see Anna Faris in action is a good excuse, but few have been quite as good as this one: "Number" features the "Scary Movie" star as a young woman who realizes she might have already met -- and dumped -- her dream guy. So she begins tracking down all of her exes to figure out which one of them was actually Mr. Right, which provides the perfect opportunity for everyone from Aziz Ansari to Andy Samberg to Zachary Quinto to provide cameos as the men in her past. Faris's number could be number one after this.

The Scoop: Nobody does smart films like George Clooney (see: "Syriana," "Good Night and Good Luck") and now he's back with perhaps his best effort yet. "The Ides of March" features Clooney (who also directs) as a presidential candidate with a dark secret. When his campaign director (Ryan Gosling) discovers that secret he must balance his ideology with the practical politics of winning at all costs. Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman help round out a brilliant cast. That smell in the air? That's the smell of award season approaching.

'Wanderlust'

Starring: Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd, Malin Akerman
The Scoop: Jennifer Aniston is kind of like the female Paul Rudd, so it's only fitting that Aniston and Rudd are teaming up here for this new rom-com about a posh New York couple who, forced by the economic downturn to move to the deep south, end up accidentally joining a hippie commune. Oh yeah, did we mention that it's written and directed by "Wet Hot American Summer" writer David Wain? And produced by, of course, Judd Apatow? Say no more.

'The Big Year

Starring: Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Steve Martin
The Scoop: The unexpected comedy dream team of Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson comes together for a film with an even more unexpected premise: Black and Martin play dudes who team up to take down Wilson in a cutthroat national bird watching championship. That's a real thing, believe it or not. Frankly, we'd watch these three sleep, so the fact that they are in a quirky, offbeat film like "The Big year" is just gravy.

Starring: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid
The Scoop: It's the generational gap to end all generational gaps. Whether or not you remember leg warmers and Cabbage Patch Kids may determine whether or not you find the idea of a "Footloose" remake to be heresy. Still, we have high hopes that this updated version -- which shows how a rebellious teen (in this case Kenny Wormald) teaches an uptight town the joy of dancing -- will introduce a new generation to the fun of cutting footloose.

'Paranormal Activity 3'

Starring: These aren't actors, it's found footage!
The Scoop: The 1980s are the hottest thing going in Hollywood these days, so it's a real stroke of luck for the people behind the wildly popular "Paranormal Activity" horror franchise that the footage they've found this time happens to be on old VHS tapes from that decade. Those tapes also happen to show sisters Katie and Kristi as little girls -- little girls who innocently stumble upon an undying evil that will haunt their lives forever. What will they find next?!

But you probably haven't seen it like this before; after all, this time "Resident Evil" director Paul W.S. Anderson is at the helm, with his wife Milla Jovovich is co-starring as the sinister Milady de Winter. Add in the likes of Orlando Bloom and Christoph Waltz -- not to mention eye-popping 3-D -- and it's safe to say that this isn't your father's (or mother's) "Three Musketeers."

'The Rum Diary'

Starring: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart
The Scoop: Johnny Depp has been working for years to bring his buddy Hunter S. Thompson's novel "The Rum Diary to the big screen and darned if he hasn't finally done it. Of course, being the biggest movie star in the world doesn't hurt, either. Depp headlines the story of a journalist who ditches the mainland in favor of Puerto Rico where he begins drinking, carousing and keeping a detailed diary of his exploits. A rogue who guzzle rum? Captain Jack Sparrow would most definitely approve.

'In Time'

Starring: Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde
The Scoop: Justin Timberlake has been a force in pop culture for a long time now, but he still looks fresh as a daisy, which makes him the perfect person to star in "In Time." JT plays a guy living in a future where people are immortal -- if they are rich enough. If not, they "expire" at age 25. When he inherits a fortune, his future seems secure, but murder charges have a way of messing up even the best plan, so he goes on the run (along with co-star Amanda Seyfried). Will Timberlake achieve the same immortality on screen that his talents have already earned him off screen? Let's just say that the future looks bright.

'Like Crazy'

Starring: Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, Jennifer Lawrence
The Scoop: Anton Yelchin's fourth film of the year (following "The Beaver," "The Smurfs" and "Fright Night") may be his best of the year as well. Here the up-and-coming star plays a college student who falls in love with a foreign exchange student (Felicity Jones). When she overstays her visa, though, she gets strong-armed out of the country by government officials, turning their perfect romance into a perfect mess. Considering "Like Crazy" won the top prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival, though, their loss is everyone's gain.

Kenny Wormald may not be a household name… yet. His biggest films to date include "Clerks II" (in which he simply plays a character called "Dancer") and "Center Stage: Turn It Up" (yeah, we never heard of that one either).

But that's all about to change when "Footloose" sashays onto screens on October 14—and Wormald, who plays leading man Ren MacCormick, is already being coined as "star material" by the powers that be.

Which is why this 27-year-old triple threat has reportedly been tapped to play Johnny Castle in the upcoming "Dirty Dancing" reboot.

According to the Hollywood Insider, word around Tinseltown is that many of those involved in the remake have screened "Footlose" and like what they see.

Apparently the guy can sing, dance and, above all, make the ladies swoon.

While there are, in theory, a "couple" of young actors being considered for the part of Johnny, it seems that Wormald is currently in the lead, and if "Footloose" does well, he may just slide right into Swayze's shoes. Oh, Baby.

We'll always have fond memories of Kenny Loggins and his contribution to the original "Footloose" soundtrack. We never would've had the phrase "Kick off your Sunday shoes" without him, a phrase that has become synonymous with images of Kevin Bacon furiously dancing about, a wild and potent portrait of teenage rebellion -- one that had a great tune to go with it.

But the time has come for another "Footloose," and with it a brand new song that summarizes the film's themes of youthful revolution, anarchy and general rowdiness. You watched Big & Rich perform their new ditty, "Fake I.D.," at the CMT Awards earlier this month, and now you can watch the official music video for the song, which features some rabble-rousing footage from the new movie.

Well, it's definitely "Footloose," even without the Kenny Loggins croonin'.

The long-awaited first look at the "Footloose" remake is finally here, and it promises the same kind of foot-stomping, chest-beating teen rebellion that made the original 1984 film such a rabble-rousing classic.

Ren (Kenny Wormald) will once again have a cathartic solo dance-off with himself in a run-down warehouse and Ariel (Julianne Hough) will once again flash a "Dance Your Ass Off" T-shirt in the courtroom. Even the broken-down yellow VW Bug is back. 

There are some new elements, too, including an actual look at the car accident that prompted the whole "No Dancing" thing in the sleepy Southern town of Bomont. Dennis Quaid's portrayal of the pedantic Reverend Moore also looks to be a bit less maniacal than John Lithgow's (though, really, how could it not be?).

Director Kenny Ortega looks like he's fashioned both a "Footloose" for a new generation and a loving homage to the original for the old-timers.

Country duo Big & Rich gave us an early taste of the upcoming "Footloose" remake when they performed their contribution to the soundtrack, "Fake I.D.," at Wednesday night's CMT Awards.

If the gleefully anarchic lyrics to "Fake I.D." are any indication, the spirit of teenage rebellion is going to be just as alive and well in the "Footloose" remake as it was in the original 1984 film, which starred Kevin Bacon before he went on to playing eternally young mutant Nazi war criminals.

Now Seth Rogen looks to update the legend for a new generation with a post-modern, ironic take on the whole superhero concept: this time around, it's his faithful sidekick, Kato (Jay Chou), who does the actual butt-kicking. And since "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" director Michael Gondry is behind the camera, we're guessing this version has a pretty good chance at sticking. Watch the trailer

That's pretty much the entire premise behind "The Roommate," which stars Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly as co-eds who are assigned the same room -- and, as it happens, the same nightmares thanks to a personal relationship that gets way, way too personal (think "Single White Female: The College Years"). It's every student's worst nightmare come true.

'The Adjustment Bureau'

The Scoop: Legendary sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick has had so many movies based on his works you'd think by now Hollywood would be reduced to adapting his grocery lists. Luckily for Tinseltown, however, Dick was renowned for his Speed-induced ability to churn out an incredible volume of work -- including the latest project of his to see the silver screen, "The Adjustment Bureau." In typical Dick fashion, this story almost defies a simple description, but here's our try: Matt Damon plays a politician whose life takes a turn for the weird when he meets a mysterious ballerina whose secrets could unravel a vast conspiracy. Looks like "1/2 Gallon of Milk and a Dozen Eggs" will have to wait a little longer. | Watch the trailer 

'Rango'

Starring: Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Timothy Olyphant
The Scoop: Over the course of his long career, Johnny Depp has often been compared to a chameleon thanks to his ability to immerse himself in any role. Well, that should come in handy with "Rango," since he is literally playing a chameleon: Rango is a lizard who, through a series of incredible circumstances, ends up becoming the sheriff of an Old West town. This animated feature reunites Depp with Gore Verbisnki, who famously directed the star in the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films. 'Red Riding Hood'

The Scoop: Hey guys, remember Catherine Hardwicke? Back in the day (that is to say, 2008), she was on top of the world, having set the record for the highest grossing film ever directed by a woman, a little something called "Twilight." And then, she kinda got dumped by the studio. Well, now she's back with an edgy, goth-modern take on the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. 

This time around, though, Red ain't so little; instead, she's played by Amada Seyfried as a hot young woman whose snowbound medieval village is under attack by a werewolf. If living well truly is the best revenge, we think Hardwicke is about get her payback in spades. | Watch the trailer 

'Paul'

Starring: Seth Rogen, Simon Pegg, Kristen Wiig, Nick Frost
The Scoop: Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have made a career lampooning Hollywood genres, from horror ("Shawn of the Dead") to action ("Hot Fuzz"). Now they take on -- or take down -- sci-fi with "Paul." The premise is pretty simple: Pegg and Frost play two dorks who, while on a trip to see Area 51, pick up an alien hitchhiker by the name of Paul (animated through CGI with voicework from Seth Rogen). Paul, it turns out, is just as big a loser as they are, which leads to hilarity on all sides, especially when you throw in the always fantastic Kristen Wiig. Heck yeah. | Watch the trailer 

'Sucker Punch'

Starring: Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish
The Scoop: Critics of Zack Snyder have claimed that his movies fetishize their subjects: from the oiled bare chests of "300" to the spandex sex of "Watchmen," his stylish and lovingly lavish fight scenes combine romance and violence in ways that many critics don't like. Well, we have a suggestion for those folks: Don't go see "Sucker Punch," because seriously, things are about to be taken to a whole new level. That's because "Punch" features a slew of hot chicks trying to escape from a mental institution via the use of machine guns, grenades and dragons -- all while rocking school-girl outfits and samurai swords. 'The Beaver'

The Scoop: Imagine if Mel Gibson ran the Muppets? The mere thought is probably like a punch to your brain, but as crazy as it sounds, that's pretty much the idea behind "The Beaver." Follow along: Mel Gibson plays a down-on-his-luck loser whose life takes a sudden and bizarre turn when he wakes up one day to find a beaver puppet on his hand. At first it's a godsend, as the beaver's confident personality cleans up Gibson's life. But when the beaver refuses to give up control, Gibson has to fight to save his family from the dark menace on the end of his arm. Jodie Foster directs and co-stars, so now you know the answer to this future trivia question: What the hell happened to Jodie Foster? | Watch the trailer

The Scoop: Once upon a time, there was a slovenly rogue of a Brit by the name of Dudley Moore who charmed audiences with his patented combination of humor and off-color antics. 

Moore, sadly, is no longer with us, but his legacy now lives on in Russell Brand, who gamely steps into Moore's shoes in this remake of Moore's most famous film, "Arthur." Dame Helen Mirren gives the whole proceeding a much needed air of respectability in the role of Arthur's nanny, while rising star Greta Gerwig supplies the hots as his object d' affection. This should be something to see. 

'Your Highness'

Starring: Danny McBride, Zooey Deschanel, James Franco, Natalie Portman
The Scoop: We love "Harry Potter" and "The Lord of the Rings" as much as the next guys, but sometimes even we have to admit all that self-serious fantasy stuff can start to get just a wee bit ridiculous at times. Luckily, Danny McBride exists for just this reason. The divine plot of "Your Highness:" James Franco (seriously, is there anything he can't do?) is a prince who has to go on one of those typical fantasy quests to save his true love -- only instead of Aragorn or Hermione helping him, his posse consists of his dumbass brother Thad (McBride, of course). This may be the first Medieval stoner comedy. | Watch the trailer 

'Scream 4'

Starring: Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette
The Scoop: Yes, that's right: The horror movie you thought you would never see is finally here. And "Scream 4" carries with it not only the baggage of fan expectations, but also an entirely different kind of baggage: stars Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who met on the set of the original "Scream" and later married, announced their divorce right after filming ended on this one. Youch. We're not sure how the murder mystery is going to unfold this time around (there's also a new class of cast members, including Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettierre), but we're pretty sure of one thing -- the onscreen chemistry between the cast members is likely to be as sharp as Ghostface's knife. | Watch the trailer 

'Water for Elephants'

Starring: Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz
The Scoop: Move over, Dumbo, because there's a new elephant movie in Hollywood these days and if the legion of Twi-Hards have anything to say about it, "Water for Elephants" is about to become the new gold standard in pachyderm cinema. That, of course, is because the lead role is being played by that brooding hair factory Robert Pattinson, whose famous locks are on full display in this period piece about a guy who joins a circus only to fall in love with the ringleader's wife (Reese Witherspoon in her first cougariffic role). The ringleader, though, is "Inglourious Basterds" bastard Christoph Waltz, so RPattz just may be screwing around with the wrong guy. You know what they say: hair today, gone tomorrow. 'Fast Five'

Starring: Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson
The Scoop: Just how many times can the cast and crew of "Fast and the Furious" replay their tried-and-true formula of hot girls, car chases and gunplay? We're not sure, but the answer is "at least five." This time around, though, "Fast Five" adds a couple of wrinkles to the proceedings in the form of a new, menacing foe (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the role of a government agent) and a great new locale (the maze-like slums of Rio de Janeiro). If they keep coming up with cool twists like these, we're looking forward to seeing the next five films in the series. | Watch the trailer

'Thor'

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman
The Scoop: Geeks and pundits alike have been debating "Thor" almost from the moment it was announced: Can Marvel catch lightning in a bottle a second time and turn a relatively unknown superhero into a blockbuster franchise like they did with "Iron Man?" Or is this going to be another "Watchmen"-style flop? Well, one thing we've learned over the years is that the best way to end a debate is with a giant hammer right to the face. That's pretty much what Marvel is giving fans with this high-octane thriller. And while star Chris Hemsworth doesn't have quite the same Q Rating as Robert Downey Jr., director Kenneth Branagh is wisely hedging his bets with big names in key supporting roles -- namely crowd pleasers Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman. 'Something Borrowed'

The Scoop: "Big Love's" Ginnifer Goodwin is set to hit the big time when "Something Borrowed" comes out this May. That's because she seems to have the perfect setup to finally launch an A-list movie career: a popular co-star (Kate Hudson) and a winning premise (she plays a woman who falls in love with her best friend's fiancé). Sure, it's hard to come up with something new in the always crowded world of Hollywood romantic comedies, but we think that Goodwin is just the right person to break the rom-com mold -- because in the world of cinema, she's truly "something new." 

'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'

Starring: Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane
The Scoop: Keira Knightley? Gone. Orlando Bloom? Gone. And Johnny Depp? Well, he's still here, which pretty much ensures that we'll be here as well when "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" opens. Because, honestly, let's face it: As much as we love Knightley and Bloom, it's Captain Jack Sparrow that puts butts in the seats. And this time around he has some new faces (Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane) and new places (London, Florida) up his sleeves when this story about the search for the Fountain of Youth arrives. 'The Hangover Part II'

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms
The Scoop: One of the best things about the surprise smash hit "Hangover' was just that -- it was a surprise. So will the sequel be as funny now that everyone knows what the schtick is? Well, consider this: Former president Bill Clinton appears in the film. And consider this: Mel Gibson doesn't, after the cast refused to let him rehab his image at their expense. Sure, that last part doesn't necessarily sound funny, but it proves that this time, the gang from "Hangover" knows exactly what it's doing. And that's a pretty scary -- and pretty funny -- concept. 

'X-Men: First Class'

Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence
The Scoop: As much as we all swooned over Hugh Jackman's hairy avenger Wolverine, the true heart of the original "X-Men" trilogy was the ideological struggle between Professor Charles Xavier and his more militant opposite, Magneto. "X-Men: First Class," which turns back the clock to the days when the two were best buddies, aims to explain how their paths diverged, while also giving Hollywood the chance to reboot the franchise without having to pay A-listers like Jackman and Ian McKellen. Hey, if it means more chance of more movies with more mutants, then we're all for it. 

'Super 8'

Starring: Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Kyle Chandler
The Scoop: Remember back when "Cloverfield" took the country by storm, thanks in large part to its super-secret viral campaign that left pretty much everything -- including the premise -- up to the imagination? Well, it's time for round two, because once again J.J. Abrams is back with a movie so secret only his hair stylist knows for sure what it's about. We gathered this much from the creepy trailer, though: It has to do with some kind of alien (probably) escaping from the government (maybe) and it's executive produced by Steven Spielberg (definitely). Let the buzz commence. 

'Bad Teacher'

Starring: Cameron Diaz, Lucy Punch, Justin Timberlake, Jason Segel
The Scoop: Fresh off his almost-Oscar worthy hype from "The Social Network," Justin Timberlake is back and this time he's getting funny. Yes, the man behind SNL's "Dick in a Box" is taking his first stab at big screen comedy (we refuse to count "The Love Guru"), this time opposite Cameron Diaz rather than his own entombed junk. Diaz and Lucy Punch play two teachers who both make a romantic play for the same guy -- J.T. -- who also happens to be one of their co-workers. A healthy workplace environment? No. A healthy comedy environment? Heck yeah. We can't wait to see what Timberlake pulls out of his box this time. 

'Green Lantern'

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard
The Scoop: DC Comics and Warner Bros. look to copy Marvel's "Iron Man" success by unveiling their own second banana franchise, "Green Lantern." The latest superhero gig for Ryan Reynolds ("Blade: Trinity," "X-Men Origins: Wolverine) find his abs decked out in emerald when a dying alien cop appoints him the new sheriff of the solar system. 

Unfortunately, Peter Sarsgaard's evil mastermind, Hector Hammond, has different ideas, which happens when your brain mutates to gigantic proportions. Will fans flock to see the throwdown? Or should DC stick to Batman and Superman and leave the rest of the Superfriends to the cartoons? One of the biggest questions of the year can only be answered one way: by your wallet.

'Cars 2'

Starring: Owen Wilson, Michael Keaton, Michael Caine
The Scoop: Can Pixar do anything wrong? If the evidence of the past 15-plus years means anything, the answer is no, which is itself reason enough to be psyched about "Cars 2." Other good reasons to get excited: "Toy Story 3" proved that sequels can be even better than the original, and this time around Michael Caine joins the cast as a debonair British spy car. Not to mention Michael Keaton is also on board, as are returning cast members Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy. Which leaves us with just one question: Why haven't we just gone ahead and elected Pixar president already? If anyone could straighten out this crazy world, it's those guys. | Watch the trailer 

'Larry Crowne'

Starring: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Bryan Cranston
The Scoop: Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are pretty much the dream team of American film royalty, which is why it was so surprising when their first film together, "Charlie Wilson's War," turned into a box office dud despite critical acclaim. So will audiences be more interested in "Larry Crowne's" less political story (co-written by Hanks and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" star Nia Vardalos) about an unemployed, middle-aged guy (Hanks) who returns to college only to find unexpected romance with his professor (Roberts)? Well, you know what they say: Second time's the charm. 

'Transformers: Dark of the Moon'

Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tyrese Gibson
The Scoop: "Transformers 2" was one of the highest grossing films of all time, but it wasn't exactly popular with everyone; even the movie's own stars took turns bashing it in the media. As a result, super-hot film accessory Megan Fox was sent packing, replaced by supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, while director Michael Bay unveiled a sleek new trailer for "Dark of the Moon" that promises to add new depth to the tale of a bunch of alien robots beating everything they see into a pulp. We know it's going to be one of the biggest films of the year, but could it also be one of the best? Now that would truly be an epic transformation.

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2'

The Scoop: We're pretty sure you're familiar with this one, but just in case, here's a rundown: After a decade worth of films and over 15 years of worldwide hype, excitement and fan frenzy, Pottermania finally comes to its climax when "Deathly Hallows Part 2" arrives this summer. Chances are you've probably already read the book, but the fun here is seeing how Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint bring those pages to life as they conclude a journey that they have been on for over half of their own lives. Bring your Kleenex, because this is going to be an emotional ending for everyone. 

'Winnie the Pooh'

Starring: Jim Cummings, Craig Ferguson, John Cleese
The Scoop: America's favorite fat little bear returns more than 30 years after his last feature film and this time he's got one thing on his mind: hunny. OK, so things haven't changed a whole lot in the world of "Winnie the Pooh," but really, why would we want them to? One of the final Disney films to be animated using traditional techniques rather than computers, "Pooh" is a collection of shorts, just as the 1977 hit "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" was. Like Winnie the Pooh himself, some things are just timeless.

'Captain America: The First Avenger'

Starring: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L. Jackson
The Scoop: The Sentinel of Liberty makes his long-awaited film debut (we're going to pretend that low-budget joke from the '80s never happened) as "Captain America: The First Avenger" brings Marvel's star-spangled superhero to life. And coming just two months after the studio's other big release of the year, "Thor," "Captain America" has a lot riding on the line -- not the least of which is the future of 2012's "The Avengers," which is not-so-subtly teased in this one's title. Will audiences buy Chris Evans as yet another superhero (following "The Fantastic Four," "The Losers," "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," hell, he was even in "TMNT")? 'Friends With Benefits'

Starring: Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake, Patricia Clarkson
The Scoop: "Black Swan's" Mila Kunis stars opposite JT in a film about two friends who start having casual sex with each other -- and then things stop being quite so casual. If this sounds familiar, it might be because "Black Swan's" Natalie Portman is also starring in a movie (opposite Ashton Kutcher) this year (called "No Strings Attached") about two friends with the same exact dilemma. So how can you tell them apart? Well, January's "No Strings Attached" didn't make our cut for the 50 films to be included on this list and July's "Friends With Benefits" did, so that pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the potential of the two movies. 'Cowboys and Aliens'

Starring: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde
The Scoop: The premise is so simple and elegant you likely did a massive facepalm as soon as you heard the title. "Cowboys and Aliens." Why the hell hasn't anyone come up with this before? In fact, it's so genius we really don't even need to tell you what the movie is about because, honestly, it's "Cowboys and Aliens." So here's what we can add to the conversation: "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau is behind the camera and international superstars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford are in front of it. 'The Smurfs'

Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria, Katy Perry, Sofia Vergara
The Scoop: You know what this world desperately needs? A live action movie about The Smurfs. And that's just what the world is going to get come August, to which we say, it's about time. OK, so not all of it is live action; the smurfs themselves are, of course, animated. They're also being voiced by a who's who of talent including Katy Perry, Fred Armisen and the legendary Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf. Add in Hank Azaria as the ultimate embodiment of evil, Sauron Gargamel, and there's just one thing left to say: "The Smurfs" is going to be smurfing smurfy. | Watch the trailer 

'The Help'

Starring: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer
The Scoop: Fans getting worn out by the non-stop parade of high-octane blockbusters and 3-D summer tentpoles finally have another option in August when "The Help" arrives. Based on the popular period novel by Kathryn Stockett, "The Help" stars the always-awesome Emma Stone as a young girl learning the strange realities of adulthood in the Deep South of the early 1960s. She's joined by a terrific ensemble cast that includes Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Cicely Tyson. Don't be surprised if you hear more about "The Help" when award season rolls around. 

'Fright Night'

Release Date: Aug. 19
Starring: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
The Scoop: We could not possibly be more stoked for this remake of the 1984 vampire cult classic "Fright Night." Sure, we don't normally get all gooey over remakes -- the originals are usually classics for a reason, you know -- but this time we're making a major exception thanks to the totally rad cast. Anton Yelchin ("Star Trek," "Terminator Salvation") plays a horror buff who, realizing that his neighbor (Colin Farrell!) is a vampire, turns to his friend (Christopher Mintz-Plasse!) and a vampire expert (David Tennant!!!) for help. This a cast we can really sink our teeth into. 

'Moneyball'

Release Date: September 23
Starring: Brad Pitt, Robin Wright, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman
The Scoop: Fans of baseball are already well familiar with the term "moneyball," but for the rest of the world, here's the scoop: Coined for the book of the same name by author Michael Lewis, "moneyball" refers to a specific style of baseball management that favors a statistical approach to organizing a team, which in turn allows small market franchises to compete with bigger spenders. Sounds f**king boring, right? Well, here's what's not boring: Brad Pitt, Robin Wright, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jonah Hill. Oh, and it's being directed by Bennett Miller, the guy who did the critically acclaimed "Capote." With a cast like that, even baseball might be fun to watch on the screen for once. 

'Abduction'

Release Date: Sept. 23
Starring: Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Alfred Molina
The Scoop: This is the moment all Twi-Hards have been waiting for: Taylor Lautner's first real attempt at carrying a movie as leading man. Or, man-child. Whatever you want to call it. Ever since Lautner bulked up for "New Moon," he's been dubbed the next big thing by everyone in Hollywood, already commanding huge paydays for his films even though so far his main success has been in the cocoon of the "Twilight" franchise. In "Abduction," though, the whole thing is on his well-toned shoulders as Lautner plays a kid whose life takes a surreal turn when he sees his own face on a missing persons website. We think by the time "Abduction' is over, Lautner will have found at least one thing: an A-list career. 

'Now'

Release Date: Sept. 30
Starring: Olivia Wilde, Cillian Murphy, Justin Timberlake, Alex Pettyfer, Amanda Seyfried
The Scoop: Olivia Wilde, Justin Timberlake, Alex Pettyfer -- this movie's cast pretty much reads like a who's who of the hottest young stars in 2011, as each of those big names has multiple big movies coming out this year. The biggest, though, may be "Now," a near-future sci-fi epic where immortality has been attained, but only if you're rich enough to afford it -- and where time, therefore, really is money. When a scruffy dude (Timberlake) comes into a fortune in time/money, though, he ends up on the run from evil a-holes (like Cillian Murphy) looking to poach his future. A future that looks increasingly bright for this amazing cast.

'Real Steel'

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand
The Scoop: And then this happened: Hugh Jackman decided to film a movie about robot boxers. Well, why not. After all, when you're Wolverine, you can pretty much do whatever the heck you want, which includes this: "Real Steel" tells the story of a near-future world where boxers have been replaced by robots, who square off in the ring with a savagery their human controllers can't hope to match. It's like "Raging Bull" meets "The Go-Bots." The real reason to tune in, though, may be co-star Kevin Durand, as the menacing character actor gets a chance to renew his battles with both Jackman (he played the Blob in "Wolverine') and Evangeline Lilly (who faced off against Durand on the cult TV hit "Lost"). 'Footloose'

The Scoop: If you like your remakes on the inspiring side, then "Footloose" is the film for you this Oct. 14, as Hollywood attempts to recapture the magic that made the original one of the feel-good hits of the '80s. Kenny Wormald steps into Kevin Bacon's dancing shoes as a kid who moves to a Midwestern town only to discover that the people there are really, really uptight about dancing. Luckily, his infectious spirit energizes everyone and overcomes all odds because, really, who can resist the universal language of dance? Certainly not us; We're already preparing to cut loose. 

'The Thing'

Starring: Joel Edgerton, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen
The Scoop: If you like your remakes on the scary side, then "The Thing" is the film for you this Oct. 14, as Hollywood attempts to recapture the terror that made the original one of the most terrifying hits of the 1980s. But these guys are actually doing something pretty smart; aware that fans consider John Carpenter's 1982 version of "The Thing" to be pretty much untouchable, the new edition is less of a remake and more of a prequel, detailing the events that led up to the arctic terror of original. And the fact that it stars "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World's" totally awesome scene-stealer Mary Elizabeth Winstead is just icing on the cake. No pun intended. 

'Paranormal Activity 3'

Release Date: Oct. 21
Starring: Katie Featherston
The Scoop: The first one was scary. The second one was really dang scary. And the third one? Well, "Paranormal Activity 3" is so scary, the studio doesn't even want you to know what it's about yet, because you might drop dead of terror before you have the chance to pony up the bucks to see it in the theater. Despite the secrecy surrounding "Part 3," though, we can tell you one thing for sure: The film may have a bigger budget, but like its predecessors, it's still going to stick close to the found footage, pseudo-realism that made the first two such a big hit -- and have now made "Paranormal Activity" an annual event. And that's not so scary after all. 

'Puss in Boots'

Starring: Antonio Banderas, Zach Galifianakis, Salma Hayek
The Scoop: Just when you were afraid that "Shrek" was finally over forever after, you know, "Shrek Forever After," here comes the first spin-off: "Puss in Boots," which focuses on the swashbuckling feline voiced by Antonio Banderas. The rest of the usual gang is nowhere to be seen this time around, but don't worry, because a couple new additions are sure to spice things up: megastar comedian Zach Galifianakis and frequent Banderas collaborator Salma Hayek. Is another animation franchise about to be born? We sure hope so. After all, we still have room for some more collectible McDonalds character glasses in our cupboard. 

'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1'

Starring: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner
The Scoop: The gang is back for the penultimate entry in the most popular movie series of all time (at least according to its fans). Team Jacob and Team Edward may have had their issues in the past, but now everyone is on the same side: Team Baby, as the whole world decides to gang up on Bella and Edward's newborn and only the combined powers of vampires and love can save her. What happens next? Well, no doubt you already know from reading the novel by Stephenie Meyer a dozen times, but that's fine; the magic is in seeing how they pull it off onscreen. And bonus points this time if they manage to film the birth scene without causing us to pass out. Eleven months and counting… 

'The Muppets'

Starring: Amy Adams, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt
The Scoop: Jason Segel aims to restore the Muppets to their rightful place in pop culture with their first big-budget, big-screen appearance in years, "The Muppets." The fresh premise: Segel plays a normal guy whose roommate happens to be, well, a muppet. When Walter (that's the mupet's name) happens to catch "The Muppet Show" one day, he realizes there are others like him out there and sets off on a quest to find his felt kinfolk. Rumor has it that everyone from Lady Gaga and Billy Crystal to Donald Glover and Jean-Claude Van Damme will cameo, which is no surprise -- after all, despite their absence, deep down everyone still love "The Muppets." 

'Hugo Cabret'

Release Date: Dec. 9
Starring: Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Sacha Baron Cohen
The Scoop: Martin Scorsese makes the leap into 3-D with this unusual adventure film starring the mostly unknown Asa Butterfield ("The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," for those of you who were forced to watch that in history class) as an orphan who lives in a train station and discovers a magical world as a result -- though not, as you might expect, via Platform 9 and 3/4. Based on the award-winning novel by Brian Selznick, "Hugo Cabret" is sure to please kids from 9 to 90 -- and that's just the cast, which ranges from the youth of Chloe Moretz to the decided non-youth of the legendary Christopher Lee. And hey, anything from Scorsese is worth a look. 

'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol'

Starring: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg
The Scoop: Since earning a Best Actor nomination for his role in 'The Hurt Locker," Jeremy Renner has quickly become the go-to actor for anyone looking to add some intensity and grit to their film -- see "The Town" and 2012's "The Avengers" for exhibits A and B. Now he's tasked with his most difficult assignment yet: convincing weary audiences that they should take Tom Cruise seriously again. We think "M:I 4" has a good chance of doing just that, though, because besides Renner, the franchise has another secret working in its favor: the last film, "M:I:3," was actually really good. We think that if fans come for the Renner, they'll stay for the Cruise -- and maybe be surprised at how cool the experience actually is. 

'Sherlock Holmes 2'

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace
The Scoop: What's one of the most hotly anticipated film of the holiday season? Why, the answer is elementary, my dear Watson: It's "Sherlock Holmes 2," which reunites Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as the legendary 19th century detective team. We're totally jazzed to see what Jared Harris (Lane Pryce on "Mad Men"!) does as Sherlock's evil arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty, and we're equally stoked to see Stephen Fry as Sherlock's weird brother Mycroft. So are we going to be first in line to see "Sherlock Holmes 2?' You don't need to be a detective to figure out that one. 

'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo'

Release Date: Dec. 21
Starring: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Stellan Skarsgard
The Scoop: It's only the first volume of the most popular series of books (for adults) in the entire world, so it's little wonder that Steig Larsson's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" is being made into a big-budget Hollywood epic just a couple short years after it was already turned into a big-budget Swedish epic. No, what's surprising is the cast they've assembled: the always intense Daniel Craig takes on the role of journalist Mikael Blomkvist, while the almost unknown Rooney Mara ("The Social Network") steps into the instantly iconic shoes of goth hacker Lisbeth Salander. It's a big gamble, but we wouldn't have it any other way; after all, the film, like the novel, needs to be dangerous. Consider that requirement fulfilled. 

'The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn'

Starring: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig
The Scoop: The graphic novels of Belgian children's author Hergé and his lead character Tintin have been beloved around the world for generations -- and have also been defying Hollywood attempts to adapt them for just as long. Enter the unbeatable heavyweight team of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, who have whipped up a motion-capture digital CGI 3-D version that is sure to blow your face clean off. And there's a whole heck of a lot more where this came from; if "Secret of the Unicorn" proves to be a hit, Spielberg and Jackson have a whopping 24 books to pick from for the sequels -- which they are already planning. It looks like the adventure is just beginning for all of us. 

'War Horse'

Starring: Jeremy Irvine, David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston
The Scoop: Horses. There's just something about them that gets boys and girls of all ages all gooey inside, which helps explain why there have been so darn many good horse movies over the years -- from "Black Beauty" and "Black Stallion" to "Seabiscuit" and "National Velvet." Now you can add "War Horse" to that esteemed list, but you might want to grab a box of tissues before you even read the premise: When Joey the horse is shipped off to the front lines during World War I, young Albert (Jeremy Irvine) follows him into the trenches to try and save his beloved best friend. And did we mention that Steven Spielberg directed it? It's a good thing computer screens are resistant to tears, otherwise this page would be too smudged for you to read.

Don't front. Everyone loves a good movie dance scene.

So how about dozens of them seamlessly compiled together, moves perfectly matched to one of the great movie dance songs of all time, Kenny Loggins' "Footloose"?

YouTuber Mart138 is a UK resident who has become known for re-editing classic movies into music videos. His "Mody Dick" is called "Dancing at the Movies"; it collects dance clips from nearly 40 different films -- and it's pure bliss. 

Apparently "Dancing at the Movies" has been around since late-August, but has skyrocketed in popularity over the last month, and now has a whopping 4.5 million views.

It's easy to see why. After all, everyone loves a good movie dance scene.

Despite seemingly insurmountable odds, the long in-development "Footloose" remake actually went into production -- and now we have the first pics from the set to prove it.

The production shot the climactic prom scene last week, and director Craig Brewer ("Hustle and Flow") has posted a behind-the-scenes glimpse via Twitter.  The pic features Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough, our Ren and Ariel for the 21st century, filling the Sunday shoes of Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer.

For those of you who have forgotten, "Footloose" is about a city kid that moves to a small town and quickly rebels against its laws against dancing and rock music.  It's awesome, as is the title song performed by Loggins.

"Footloose" will dance its way into theaters on April 1, 2011.
