What You Need to Know About 'Dark Shadows'

Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer in Dark Shadows
Warner Bros.

Even immortal vampire Barnabas Collins himself would find it a Herculean task to wade through all 1,225 episodes of the original "Dark Shadows" TV series. To put it in perspective, a new complete coffin-shaped DVD box set boasts a runtime of 30,000 hours, and that's without bathroom breaks.

The supernatural soap opera, which ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971, is now getting the full-on feature film treatment. "Dark Shadows" (the movie) has all the big-budget trimmings courtesy of director Tim Burton and his muse Johnny Depp as Barnabas. Before you devour the May 11 release, we've created an easy-breezy introduction to all the things you'll find lurking in the "Shadows." Get More »

'#ASK Tim Burton' and He Shall Answer

Get More: www.mtvu.com

Do any other Cal Arts graduates recall the "naked Halloween parties" that Tim Burton remembers so fondly from his college days?

The "Dark Shadows" director delivers a few unexpected asides in MTV-U's "#ASK Tim Burton," a candid Q&A session with the beloved creator of such fantasy classics as "Edward Scissorhands," "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Beetlejuice." David, a junior at Tim's alma mater and a talented stop-motion animator himself, goes one-on-one with his mentor as Burton reveals which quirky characters he relates to the most, how he tames his crazy hair and more.

"Dark Shadows," the latest bit of cinematic Burton magic, opens May 11.

GALLERY: Ghouls and Gals at the 'Dark Shadows' Premiere

If strange is indeed relative, then we love this premiere like a brother.

Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Chloe Moretz and other members of Tim Burton's weird family stepped out on the red carpet Monday night to celebrate the Hollywood premiere of "Dark Shadows." Despite the film's rather odd premise (it's a supernatural tale and — even more peculiar — one set in the '70s), everyone looked relatively… normal. Well, normal-ish, anyway.

Check out our collection of photos from the premiere and pay a visit to the "Dark Shadows" clan yourself when the film opens on May 11.

Next Factor: 'Dark Shadows' Star Gulliver McGrath

Gulliver McGrath in Dark Shadows
Warner Bros.

Back in his pre-"Alice in Wonderland" days, Tim Burton took a chance by casting Winona Ryder, a relative unknown at the time, in "Beetlejuice." In doing so, he catapulted her career into the stratosphere. More than 20 years later, Burton is taking another chance on a dark-haired, fair-skinned young actor -- an Australian boy named Gulliver McGrathBurton handpicked him out of a slew of hopefuls to join the ensemble in his star-studded vampire comedy "Dark Shadows." While it's pretty early to bet, we have a good feeling this kid will go places like Ryder. And we're not talking about prison.

See the Light With Our Scary Awesome 'Dark Shadows' Giveaway

Warner Bros.

Creatures of the night (or day, if that's your thing), it's time to get down and groovy with our latest giveaway.

"Dark Shadows" stars our favorite human chameleon, Johnny Depp, as Barnabas Collins, an 18th century wealthy playboy who leaves Angelique Bouchard scorned. Turns out Angelique is a witch and doesn't handle rejection very well. She curses Barnabas to live forever as a vampire and buries him alive in a coffin, only to be unearthed in 1972 to an age of Chevys and dysfunctional families. Too bad witches live forever too and this one is set on ruining on the Collins' name.

Sure, it sounds like a grim premise, but judging from Depp and Tim Burton's previous collaborations, this movie will surely be a bloody good time. And your futures will be anything but "dark" if you enter for the chance to win these radical prize packs. Get More »

The 20 Sexiest Men of Summer 2012

Summer isn't just the season for blockbusters. It's also the time of beefcakes. Oh sure, good-looking men abound in movies all year, but there's something about the hottest months that really brings them out, takes off their shirts, and makes them run, leap, and roll in slow motion.

This year seems especially easy on the eyes. We have the usual slate of superheroes (all of whom look fantastic in their capes and codpieces), soldiers and assassins, but with the extra spice of an android, a vampire, a medieval warrior, and a whole stable of male strippers. Any one of those is enough to make the season, but the combination is enough to make you glad theaters are air conditioned.

For now, here's a preview of summer's sexiest men to keep you feeling the heat until May and beyond.

'The Dictator' Avoids Being Eclipsed by 'Dark Shadows'

Paramount

Sacha Baron Cohen has been giving his all to promote his upcoming film, "The Dictator," for months, but it seems that all the Ryan Seacrest ash-bombing in the world still can't outdo Depp.

Cohen's highly anticipated comedic follow-up to 2009's "Brüno" will have its release date pushed back, thanks to Johnny Depp's upcoming "Dark Shadows."

Depp's time-traveling vampire picture, directed by his longtime collaborative partner Tim Burton, was deemed by Paramount as having too much audience overlap with "The Dictator," and, as such, will not hit theaters until May 16, a full five days later than expected. Get More »

Burton & Depp Go '70s Goth in 'Dark Shadows' Trailer

Dark Shadows
Warner Bros.

Well, it's about time! It's not like the movie is coming out in less than two months or anything (May 11, to be exact).

Some movies get trailers a year before they hit theaters, but Warner Bros. has been keeping "Dark Shadows" pretty close to the vest -- until now. The first look at Tim Burton's big-screen adaptation of Dan Curtis' 1960s supernatural soap opera made its debut on "Ellen," and we have to say, it's rather … goofy. Get More »
