Questions and Answers With Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser is not quite what you would expect. Just trust us: Whatever it is you're expecting from the star of "Dudley Do-Right" and "Blast From the Past," he's decidedly not it. For a guy who has starred in so many family friendly films, Fraser is pleasantly quirky and candid. He's also made a few unexpected moves in his career: Alongside a starring voice role in another one of those mainstream family movies ("Escape From Planet Earth"), Fraser has another decidedly darker, quirkier film coming out this month, "Stand Off."
As Fraser described it to us, "It's a family story about what happens when people put the guns down and actually talk to each other. There's a way forward, peacefully. Open a dialogue, try that. Logical discourse, how bout that. See what happens." Alternately: It's about an Irish fish market robbery gone horribly wrong, with a few familial mishaps along the way (a mobster tries to kidnap a baby, Fraser's character may or may not be the father of the perfect stranger holding up the fish market, etc.).
NextMovie chatted on the phone with Fraser ahead of the release of "Stand Off" and convinced him to tell us his favorite movie title pun, who he wouldn't want in a bomb shelter with him and for which skill you have to "squeeze your buttcheeks together and give it everything you've got." Get More »
Vanessa Hudgens Gets Heavy with Brendan Fraser in 'Gimme Shelter'
"High School Musical" made her career, but as of late, Vanessa Hudgens has been doing everything in her power to wash away the memories of the tween pop phenomenon. That kind of early success can define a young actress and it's obvious from her recent career choices, the last thing Hudgens wants to be is a cute face with a pair of rockin' vocal chords.
Her latest is a step in the right direction: Hudgens will join Brendan Fraser in the indie drama "Gimme Shelter," which Hollywood Reporter notes will start shooting at the end of this month. Directed by Ron Krauss (who has a few low-budget indies under his belt), the film tells the story of a pregnant, homeless teenager (Hudgens) who abandons her abusive mother and finds solace with her biological father (Fraser).
Complications arise when the dad throws her back out on the street when she refuses to abort her child, a grievance derived from his own fling that resulted in Vanessa Hudgens. Whether the film will utilize the 1969 Rolling Stones track has yet to be determined (you know it will). Get More »
The Rock Rolling Into 'Center of the Earth 2'
Seriously this time, can you smell what The Rock is cooking? Because as far as we can tell, it smells a lot like pterodactyl burgers.
This makes sense considering Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has signed on to replace Brendan Fraser in the upcoming big-budget adventure "Journey to the Center of the Earth 2," per the Hollywood Reporter. Get More »
