It was a welcome surprise on Oscar night when Dame Shirley Bassey reminded us that she was, at one point, the queen of the James Bond theme song. Not that Adele has necessarily snatched her crown, per se (sharing is fun!), but she most definitely deserved the golden statue she received for her theme to "Skyfall."
Actually, it's pretty fair to say that anything Adele touches turns to gold (or, to be honest, quadruple platinum), which is why hearing the tune done without instruments or Adele's voice has the potential to be, er, less than good. But don't tell that to a cappella quintet LVL5, whose excellent, lush "Skyfall" cover (and impressive lead solo by Octavia Petrut) would surely be enough to get Adele to call it "bloody brilliant."
Oscar might be the word of the day, but for some folks, their own names were what rung loudest and proudest during this morning's 2013 Academy Award nominations read-out. Sure, some of them were just as baffled by some of the snubs as the vociferous folks of the Twitterverse, but they couldn't complain too much because, hey, they just got a chance at the most elite prize in the biz.
So, in the day's spirit of actors and such talking about actors and such, we've gathered here the nominees' various reactions to this year's nods. You can probably read between the lines on a few of these.
Jennifer Lawrence, "Silver Linings Playbook": "I'm so honored and grateful for this nomination and to be in the company of such talented actresses. Having the fortunate opportunity to work with David O. Russell was an extraordinary gift and I am so thrilled for my fellow cast members Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver who are all nothing short of amazing. This was a labor of love that we all poured our hearts into and could not be more thankful to The Weinstein Company and Harvey Weinstein for their unyielding support of the film" (ET Online). Unless you're curing cancer right now, drop what you're doing and spend a few minutes looking at what is sure to be your new favorite Tumblr, with the straightforward title "What if Adele was Mrs. Doubtfire?"
Imagine Adele saying, "you wicked, wicked monkey!" Mrs. Doubtfire's hairy knuckles clutching a microphone, wearing a sparkly dress. Adele minding the children and barely veiling the love in her eyes!
Forget Halloween and Columbus Day, because October's number one holiday is being celebrated today worldwide: Global James Bond Day, which marks the 50th anniversary of the 1962 release of the first James Bond film, "Dr. No."
And in order to really celebrate in style, not only do we have Adele's new theme song for you, we've also got a brand new clip from next month's "Skyfall" as well.
Hey, it was either that or give everyone a license to kill.
For half a century, the James Bond franchise has been a pop culture centerpiece, with actors, models and musicians all getting their big breaks along the way. But as big as Bond is, some stars are even bigger, which is why this latest news is so exciting: Adele is going to be performing the theme song for "Skyfall."
Sorry, 007, but this time around, it looks like you'll have to settle for second billing. Get More »
