But while that comparison is apt in terms of the way your eyeballs will melt right out of your head when you see this film on the big screen in 3D, "Life of Pi" does have something "Avatar" didn't: A moving, powerful and heartwarming story.

That's because "Life of Pi" is an adaptation of the award winning international hit novel of the same name by author Yann Martel. Where some complained that "Avatar" was all flash and no substance, "Life of Pi" is all flash and all substance.

First up is "Skyfall," which carries on a long tradition of excellent scores for James Bond films. Seriously, is there any franchise in film history as easily and instantly recognizable by its musical cues than James Bond? And with the "Skyfall" score being composed by Thomas Newman ("Road to Perdition," "The Iron Lady") you know this one is going to live up to the legacy.

But when musical legacies are up for discussion, the talk begins and ends with John Williams, who delivers his latest masterpiece with the soundtrack to "Lincoln." Williams, oh by the way, has received 47 Oscar nominations for his work. Need we say more?

Once again starring the unflappably cool (or is that ice cold) Daniel Craig as James Bond, this latest adventure takes the action to a new, intensely personal level, as 007 has to choose between his duty to his country and his devotion to his mentor, Judi Dench's M.

Or, something like that. Oscar winning director Sam Mendes has been keeping it all very close to the vest in a style that Bond himself would envy. What we do know for sure is this: There will be gadgets. There will be martinis. And there will be Bond girls.

Sorry, Chicken Little, but if this is the "Skyfall" you've been warning us about all these years, all we can say is: Bring it on.

Well, it is real, as "Lincoln" arrives in limited release this week.

Let the Oscar race officially begin.

And as if the combined resumes of Spielberg, Day-Lewis and Lincoln weren't enough, "Lincoln" also features a veritable who's who of top notch acting talent, including Oscar winners Sally Field and Tommy lee Jones, Oscar nominees Jackie Earle Haley and David Strathairn and, of yeah, the hottest movie star alive, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Just to name a few.

There have been a lot of big movies this year and there are still more to come. But they just don't make them any bigger than "Lincoln." It opens wide next weekend, but if you can see it now, take it from us: You won't regret it.

"Arthur Christmas" is last year's winning animated feature from the folks responsible for Wallace and Gromit. That can't be bad, right?

"A Muppet Christmas Carol" gets the 20^th anniversary special treatment, which should appease Miss Piggy at least for one holiday season.

"Kung-Fu Panda Holiday" favors inclusiveness over yultidings, so this short revolves around a holiday called The Winter Feast. Apparently they don't have Festivus in ancient anthropomorphized China.

So forget about Thanksgiving and, well, everything else that takesplace over the next seven weeks or so. Because as of right now, it's Christmas (or… whatever) on your Blu-ray player. Happy holidays!

Well, this week the new soundtrack for the animated feature "Wreck-It Ralph" arrives and while the video games being spoofed in the movies may be old school, the music has definitely come a long, long way.

Want proof? Well, look -- and listen -- no further than Rihanna, Owl City and Skrillex, each of whom contributes new tracks to the "Wreck-It Ralph" soundtrack.

Add in a little dash of old time flavor courtesy of composer Henry Jackman and you have a soundtrack that combines the best of the past and the present, all in one addictive package.

The premise is elegantly simple: Wreck-It Ralph is the bad guy in a classic 80's video game. The result is a great piece of animation that not only features voicework from stars like John C. Reilly, Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman, but also cameos and supporting turns by classic video game characters of yore, from Q*bert to Zangief.

Designed to be played with the Kinect motion sensor, "Avengers: Battle for Earth" literally allows you to become one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, as every swing of your arm and flex of your muscle translates directly into on-screen action.

And if you were disappointed with some of the superheroes who were left out of "The Avengers," don't worry, because with 20 classic Marvel characters to pick from, you can not only play Captain America, Iron Man and Thor, but also as Spider-Man, Wolverine, Giant-Man, Wasp, The Vision, Ms. Marvel , The Black Panther and many other "Avengers" stalwarts.

So check it out. Because the Earth needs saving and you're just the right person for the job.

Just in time for the presidential election comes this comedic look at everything hilarious -- and hilariously wrong -- with America's democratic process.

And since the two candidates doing battle in this film are played by the two most popular comedians in Hollywood, Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, viewers can be assured that no matter which side of the aisle they are on, there will be plenty to laugh at either way.

So before you head out to the polls, head out to the video store and check out "The Campaign" on Blu-ray. Because a vote for "The Campaign" is a vote for hilarity.

That's the takeaway from "The Man with the Iron Fists," which opens in theaters this week and which is the directorial debut of star RZA.

RZA, of course, first rose to fame as a member of the rap supergroup The Wu-Tang Clan. And The Wu-Tang Clan is renowned for using imagery and even beats derived from the  kung-fu, chop-sockey flicks that were part of the 70's grindhouse scene.

So the fact that RZA is not only starring in, but also directing and writing the music for "The Man with the Iron Fists" is nothing short of awesome. And even better, he's gotten a who's who of Hollywood butt-kickers to join him, including Russell Crowe and the team of Lucy Liu and producer Quentin Tarantino, both of whom worked with RZA on "Kill Bill."

So remember, kids: Dreams can come true, especially if those dreams involve an incredible amount of stylized violence. You go, RZA.

Luckily, what once was true is now a lie and that's thanks in large part to the horror franchise "Silent Hill," which this week offers up its second installment, "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D."

Based on the best selling video game "Silent Hill 3," "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D" tells the tale of a girl (Adelaide Clemens) and her dad ("Silent Hill" star Sean Bean) who end up being transported to the sinister alternate dimension known as Silent Hill.

And not only is Bean back for a second time around, he's brought with him his "Game of Thrones" co-star Kit Harrington, who plays another mysterious figure seemingly trapped in the deadly confines of Silent Hill.

All of which adds up to an on-screen adventure as terrifying as anything you'll see on the big screen this year.

So set down the controller. Because the time for games is over. And the time for "Silent Hill" has begun.

"Blade Runner" has probably been released in more different formats and different editions than just about any film ever. But that shouldn't stop you from checking out the latest, as the 30^th anniversary edition features five different cuts of the film.

Picking up more or less where 2010's "Taken" left off, "Taken 2" finds Neeson's ex black ops agent visiting scenic Istanbul, where he is surprised by his daughter (Maggie grace) and ex-wife (Famke Janssen).

He's even more surprised though, by a group of really angry Albanian crooks, who want revenge for the way that Neeson shot, stabbed and slaughtered his way through their family members in the first movie. Movie thugs that actually have families?! Amazing.

Of course, their plan to get revenge has one major obstacle: Those pesky skills. All we can say is, buckle up, because "Taken 2" is here and this time around, Neeson is taking even fewer prisoners than he did last time.

Fast forward to this week and, oh how times have changed. Burton is a big time director and Disney couldn't be happier to work with him. And that's why fans everywhere now have a chance to see Burton's vision on the big screen thanks to the new feature-length version of "Frankenweenie."

Of course, technology -- and Burton's film budget -- have come a long way since 1984. For one thing, the film is done in lovingly detailed digital animation that only emulates the old-fashioned stop motion of the past. And even better, this "Frankenweenie" is in 3D.

A quarter of a century is a long time to wait. But for Burton, "Frankenweenie" is a dream that just wouldn't die. And now that he's finally brought it back to life, we can't wait to see the result.

And now, 16 years later, the survivors of that incident receive their latest injection thanks to the release of "Resident Evil 6" this week.

Picking up where the events of "Resident Evil 5" left off (naturally)," Resident Evil 6" offers a unique game play experience thanks to three self-contained but intertwining story lines featuring different protagonists.

Of course, none of the protagonists are Milla Jovovich's Alice; you'll just have to wait for the seventh "Resident Evil" movie for that one.But if you have caught the "Resident Evil" bug, then check it out.

And not only does it include material from the classic original novel by William Goldman, it also boasts a foreword by director Rob Reiner and an afterword by producer Norman Lear, who help tell the inside story of how "The Princess bride" became one of the most beloved films of all time.

If there's every been a film worth celebrating, it's "The Princess Bride." So check out "The Princess Bride: A Celebration" and get ready to be enchanted all over again.

Usually, of course, when a hot new Bu-ray comes out, we go into all sorts of details, like the factthat Joss Whendon was the director or that Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth all appear together, reprising their roles from "Iron Man," "Captain America" and "Thor. Or how "The Avengers" is the third highest grossing film in the history of the world.

This time around, though, none of that is really necessary. After all, "The Avengers" is the biggest pop culture phenomenon of the year. You know what it is. You know what it's about. You're already wearing the officially licensed Hawkeye underpants.

So we won't bother talking about how "The Avengers" is the centerpiece of the Marvel universe of movies and a launching pad for their next generation of films. It's needless.

"The Avengers" comes out on Blu-ray this week. Why would anybody need to know more than that?

But there are a few things about "Looper" that aren't quite so obvious. For example, Gordon-Levitt, Willis and co-star Emily Blunt have all been raving about this film, each calling it one of the best films of their respective careers.

And then there's the fact that Gordon-Levitt' last collaboration with director Rian Johnson, 2005's "Brick," was an instant indie classic that rocketed JGL to the superstardom he enjoys today.

It all adds up to one of the must-see movie events of the year. Because you don't need to be a time traveler to know that 2012 belongs to Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

And while most people think of "The Avengers" when they think of this unbeatable duo, there's another film arriving on Blu-ray this week that we think is not only one of their best, but one of the coolest films of the year, period: "The Cabin in the Woods."

Produced and co-written by Whedon, "The Cabin in the Woods" stars Hemsworth as one of a group of fun loving friends who head to the wilderness for some much need rest and relaxation. What they find instead is one of the twistiest, cleverest and most surprising sci-fi horror/films ever made.

Whedon. Hemsworth. Another film, another instant classic. Whether it's to the woods or to stop a supervillain, we'll take a trip with these two any time.

There's really only one thing certain about the future: In "10 Years," Channing Tatum will probably be even hotter than he is right now.

That's one of the big takeaways from the new indie drama "10 years," which opens in select theaters this week. Tatum co-stars alongside a who's who of young actors -- including Ari Graynor, Justin Long, Rosario Dawson, Chris Pratt, Max Minghella, Aubrey Plaza and his own wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum -- as members of a high school class returning for their tenth reunion.

Ten years can bring a lot of changes to your life. And "10 Years" might just be one of the things that changes it. All we can say is, any future that includes Channing Tatum is one we're happy to live in.

And now, the three are coming together once again for the eyepopping new book "The Art of Marvel Studios."

Face it: Your coffee table will never be the same again.

This one truly is for "The Birds."

Presented on the big screen at select theaters on Wednesday night only, "The Birds" brings back all the terror and all the chills of Tippi Hedren's classic battle against a flock of avian killers, as a small town is bombarded with death from above. And here you thought that pigeon crapping on your windshield was bad.

Featuring one of Hitchcock's most frightening screenplays (which is really saying something), "The Birds" has been a classic from the moment in first premiered in 1962. Celebrate that legacy this Wendesday by seeing it on the big screen.

Because this film is flocking awesome.

Finally, "Dredd 3-D" brings some justice for the judge.

Starring "Star Trek" and "Lord of the Rings" hero Karl Urban, this edition of "Dredd" puts the futuristic law enforcement agent up against his most deadly enemy yet: An entire skyscraper filled with dope addled killers.

Unfortunately for them, you can't evade the long arm of the law when that arm is holding up a gigantic machine gun. And with Dredd battling his way up 200 floors one bullet at a time, let's just say this film brings new meaning to the term "laying down the law."
