Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart to Rejoin 'X-Men'

Marvel

They just couldn't stay away: Like a magnet is drawn to a fridge, Sir Ian McKellen will return to his role as the villainous Magneto in the next "X-Men" film, "X-Men: Days of Future Past." Director Bryan Singer announced the return of McKellen, as well as Sir Patrick Stewart as Professor X, via Twitter today.

"Thrilled to announce @ianmckellen118 & @SirPatStew are joining the cast of #XMEN #DaysOfFuturePast #magneto #professorX More to come..." the director tweeted.

He also confirmed that Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy, who all appeared in the most recent installment of the comic book saga, "X-Men: First Class," would all make appearances in the newest film.

Both Stewart and McKellen last appeared as their mutant alter egos in 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand." Singer himself has also taken a leave of absence from the franchise — after directing "X-Men" and "X2," he took a break from the series for two films, and returns as director and producer of the latest title, due out in 2014.

The film, currently in pre-production, will be a sequel to "X-Men: First Class," and will involve time travel, Singer confirmed to Entertainment Weekly over the summer.

Buckle your seatbelts and sheath your Adamantium claws, folks. It's gonna be a wild ride to 2014.
