One of the most surprising, controversial and infamous marriages in Hollywood history apparently has come to an end today as People is reporting that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are officially getting a divorce.
"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe told People. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."
"Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children," Cruise's rep told People. "Please allow them their privacy."
The romance between Cruise, 49, and Holmes, 33, began making headlines from the moment the pair started dating in 2005. Just a month into their relationship, Cruise famously jumped up and down on a couch during an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," a display that many industry insiders blame for his subsequent decline in popularity.
That didn't dissuade the couple, however, with Holmes giving birth to daughter Suri in 2006 following one of the most highly publicized celebrity pregnancies in memory. In November of that year, the pair finally wed in an opulent ceremony held inside a 15th century Italian castle.
Holmes, who took a hiatus from acting following her daughter's birth, is currently filming an as-yet untitled movie co-starring Jean Reno and William Hurt, while Cruise's latest, "Rock of Ages," hit theaters two weeks ago. The marriage was the first for Holmes and the third for Cruise, who previously was married to Nicole Kidman and Mimi Rogers.
