We've gotta admit, we were expecting the divorce proceedings between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes — which began a little more than a week ago when Holmes filed for divorce and sole custody of their daughter Suri Cruise — to be slow and sticky. But TomKat has always had a way of always keeping us on our toes, and what better way to finish it out than to surprise the world with a surprisingly peaceable and quick settlement?
According to Us Weekly, Cruise and Holmes have now settled their divorce with a signed agreement which also addresses the issue of custody over their six-year-old daughter Suri (though no details on that matter are available at this time).
Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe issued a statement on the matter which asserted that counsel for Tom Cruise acted with "professionalism and diligence that helped bring about this speedy resolution."
Also, the former couple released a joint statement preceding the settlement agreement announcement, saying, "We are committed to working together as parents to accomplishing what is in our daughter Suri's best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents."
Also of interest is the fact that, according to the Huffington Post, Holmes has now returned to the Catholic church after five years of practicing Scientology, Cruise's controversial religion of choice. Reportedly, Holmes has committed to the Church of St. Francis Xavier in New York City, and while she hasn't yet attended a service as a returned member, she did register as parishioner for the church.
And that's that. So ends the story that started with Tom Cruise infamously jumping up and down on Oprah's yellow couch and declaring "I love Katie Holmes!"
