Is Maverick coming back to the silver screen, for real? When the first rumblings of "Top Gun 2" began a while back, word on the street was that Tom Cruise would return for a "small role." Let's pause there. When was the last time Cruise did anything "small?"

Not surprisingly, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (who happens to be in the process of directing "One Shot," starring Mr. Cruise) set the record straight, declaring, "There is no 'Top Gun 2' in which Maverick is not the starring role."

However, McQuarrie may have lost some control along the way, as screenwriting team Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (who penned the blockbuster "Thor") took over—and now it's once again unclear if Maverick will be the lead in their version.

Hmm.

Cruise is doing his share of PR for the sequel already—even though it doesn't have a completed script yet. (Does this man ever stop working?) As Collider reports, It sounds like his main motivation is to reunite with director Tony Scott. Cruise recalled, "I said to Tony, I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven't made a film since 'Days of Thunder.'" He continued, "I hope we can figure this out to go do it again. If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot 'Top Gun.'"

Sounds good to us, Maverick. But the real question is, will Iceman return?
