UPDATE: Tom Cruise has agreed to star in "All You Need Is Kill," Variety confirms. And, yes, the movie is back to being called "All You Need Is Kill."

------------

A little over a week ago, we reported that Brad Pitt was looking to reunite with his "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" director/Angelina cupid Doug Liman for the adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's manga "All You Need Is Kill," not to be confused with a similarly-titled Beatles song.

Now that Pitt has apparently scrubbed the project, it seems like Liman needs more than kill, he needs a new leading man… and a new title.

According to The Hollywood Reporter he's got both in the form of Tom Cruise, who is in negotiations to star in the sci-fi actioner now going under the less aggressive moniker "We Mortals Are."

The article goes to great lengths to point out that the superstar-in-decline has four major projects coming down the pike, including "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," "One Shot," "Rock of Ages," and the untitled Joseph Kosinski sci-fi epic, all of which may add up to a big-time comeback.

Assuming it sticks to the source material, "We Mortals Are" will focus on a future armored soldier who gets killed on the battlefield daily only to be continually revived the next day until he becomes a super-duper unstoppable combat genius.

Could this "Groundhog Day" meets "Star Wars" scenario be the kind of breakthrough concept Cruise needs to take things to the next level, or will it simply be perceived as a Johnny-come-lately "Source Code?"
