Are You Ready For 'The Desolation of Smaug?'

New Line

Ever since Peter Jackson announced he was finally going to be directing an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy novel "The Hobbit," fans have been wondering one thing: When are we going to see Smaug?

Well, now we know the answer, as according to Deadline, Warner Bros. and MGM have announced that the second movie of the trilogy is officially going to be titled "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" and will hit theaters on December 13, 2013.

Merry Christmas?

Of course, not so long ago the second movie was expected to be the end of the story, as Jackson and company had originally planned to follow "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" — which hits theaters this December 14 — with the conclusion in "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" next year.

Somewhere along the way, however, Jackson decided that he might just be able to turn this bad larry into a trilogy. And that means that not only is the second film now called "The Desolation of Smaug," but "There and Back Again" will be pushed off to July 18, 2014.

Given how long fans have waited for "The Hobbit" to arrive on the big screen, though, a few extra months to wrap up one of the biggest epics ever put to film isn't that big a deal. Plus, it means more hobbits, more Gandalf and much, much more of the deadly dragon Smaug.

Sounds like a good deal to us.
