The world premiere of "The Avengers" took place last week, but since the film isn't going to open nationwide until May 4, the folks at Marvel kindly asked the attending media to wait until then to post their reviews.
Guess how well that worked.
The first official reviews are in from Hollywood's leading industry sources and it seems that the critics agree: "The Avengers" is totally awesome. Two weeks never seemed longer.
"Director Joss Whedon pulls off a stunning feat in bringing balance to this superhuman circus, engineered to charm the geek core and non-fans alike," The Hollywood Reporter says. "'The Avengers' is humongous, the film Marvel and its legions of fans have been waiting for. It's hard to imagine that anyone with an appetite for the trademark's patented brand of fantasy, effects, mayhem and strangely dressed he-men will be disappointed; not only does this eye-popping 3-D display of visual effects fireworks feature an enormously high proportion of action scenes, but director Joss Whedon has adroitly balanced the celebrity circus to give every single one of the superstar characters his or her due."
"Marvel's cinematic master plan for its comic book all-stars pays off in extravagant fashion with 'The Avengers,'" Variety says. "Like a superior, state-of-the-art model built from reconstituted parts, Joss Whedon's buoyant, witty and robustly entertaining superhero smash-up is escapism of a sophisticated order, boasting a tonal assurance and rich reserves of humor that offset the potentially lumbering and unavoidably formulaic aspects of this 143-minute team-origin story."
"'The Avengers,'" indieWire adds, "is thrilling, hilarious and brilliantly executed. It's not just the best Marvel movie to date (although it is that), and it's not just in the very top tier of superhero movies (although it is), but it's one of the most all-around satisfying summer blockbusters since God-knows-when."
Cinema Blend, meanwhile, was impressed with the movie's action sequences. "Seemingly taking on a philosophy of 'go big or go home,' the action is not only pure spectacle, but perfectly paced and shot by Whedon, who makes frequent cuts so that we can see everything that's going on with the different heroes. The final battle sequence between the superhero team and Loki's army is better than all of the action in the other Marvel movies combined and multiplied by ten. It earns the buildup from all the preceding films by being the most epic title we’ve seen with these characters yet."
It wasn't all five star reviews, though, as The Guardian found "The Avengers" to only be really good fun instead of the greatest thing ever. Still, they liked Whedon's energy, saying that "the writer-director's confident take on the Avengers series carries the mark of a piece of expensively assembled fan fiction, albeit stitched together with a lightness and wit that will just about carry the casual viewer through two-and-a-half-hours of comic geek nirvana."

And "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau echoed those sentiments with a simple two word review: "Great premiere."
