'Sucker Punch' Soundtrack Punches Up the Classics

WaterTower Music

If you're a fan of director Zack Snyder ("Watchmen," "300"), you know that subtlety isn't exactly his strong suit. Going by the soundtrack to his new action/fantasy/teenage boy fantasy  "Sucker Punch," this extends to every aspect of the process.

The film's soundtrack is comprised exclusively of covers of classic songs, including Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," The Smiths'' "Where Is My Mind" and The Stooges' "Search and Destroy." While no song matches the intensity of the original, Snyder reworked many of the selections to avoid the original sin of copying the source material wholesale.

So we get Eurhythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" turned into a jazzy noir number sung by "Sucker Punch" star herself Emily Browning. The cold, detached singing of Annie Lennox have transformed into the chanteuse vocals favored by singers like Julee Cruise in all those David Lynch films. Browning also appears on a cover of a slowed-down version of The Pixies' "Where Is My Mind," with an orchestral dirge replacing the original's jittery guitar as well as a new version of The Smiths' "Asleep" with soaring strings and emotive timpanis.

While Browning and co-star Carla Gugino moonlight as singers -- the latter on Roxy Music's "Love is the Drug" -- the album is mostly left to the professionals, including UK rock group Skunk Anansie, Dead Weather and The Kills singer Alison Mosshart and Icelandic singer-songwriter Emiliana Torrini. On "White Rabbit," the ominous, foreboding tone of Grace Slick's vocals and Spencer Dryden's funereal marching band snare is now a groove-heavy song you'd find in a club at 4 a.m.

"'Sucker Punch' is a film created with multiple levels of reality, so this same layered construct had to be considered and applied when approaching the music," Snyder recently said. "The selection of songs we chose and the various ways in which they were each re-envisioned had to add depth, dimension and meaning to the sequences they exist within."
