Shiloh Fernandez Fights For His Soul in 'Evil Dead'

Shiloh Fernandez is about to get his soul swallowed, and not just by Hollywood. This time, it's evil.

The "Red Riding Hood" star has been tapped to play the protagonist in Fede Alvarez's remake of the 1981 horror classic "Evil Dead."

In the latest adaptation, penned and directed by Alvarez, the plot remains much the same – a bunch of kids decide to spend a idyllic vacation together in an isolated cabin in the woods, unwittingly unleash a bunch of demons, and wage an epic battle to keep their souls intact.

While Bruce Campbell has been the iconic chin of the franchise for over three decades as Ash, the chainsaw-wielding anti-hero, Variety reports that Alvarez's take on the film will not include that particular role. Despite this devastating oversight, Campbell fans can rest easy knowing that the star is producing the movie with "Evil Dead" director Sam Raimi and producer Rob Tapert for the remake, through by Raimi's Ghost House.

Fernandez will play an as-of-yet unnamed male lead, but the search is still on for an actress to play his female counterpart since "Snow White" star Lily Collins dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.

While "Evil Dead" may shoot Fernandez to stardom, he's not resting on his laurels just yet. The 26-year-old star is still hard at work, having scored a lead in Killer Films' upcoming "Deep Powder," in addition to wrapping parts in indie thriller "The East" with Alexander Skarsgard, Ellen Page and Brit Marling, and "Syrup" with Amber Heard.

Now that's groovy.
