The Hint of Another 'Saw' Tortures Us

Lionsgate

We know that advertising is often a clever smokescreen for psychological manipulation, but when a movie is called "Saw 3D: The Final Chapter," well, we kind of assume that's the final chapter, right? Yes and no.

Lionsgate's VP Michael Burns stopped by CNBC to chat about "The Hunger Games," but more importantly, Lionsgate's possible merger with Summit. In between other nuggets of info, Burns mentions that, "I'm sure, some day, you'll see 'Saw' back in the picture.'" (You can watch the video here.)

Okay, let's get down to the nitty gritty. Lionsgate makes a lot of money from that sadistic little puppet. It's currently in talks to merge with Summit; these negotiations fell through once before. If you know your "Twilight," you know that Summit is the studio that snapped up rights to the sparklevamp series after MTV Film let its rights lapse.

Behind the scenes of Hollywood, execs have been feverishly searching for "the next 'Twilight,'" a series that would be several movies with gorgeous young stars and tons of tie-ins and spin-offs and stuff. We know now that's the "The Hunger Games," which, surprise, Lionsgate has in its back pocket.

One might say that Lionsgate is in the weaker bargaining position here in its deal with Summit, which fell through once before. What else does Lionsgate have that would be as interesting to Summit's audience than "Saw"? Not enough to keep that damn puppet dead or in two dimensions.

Do you think there's a real possibility of another "Saw," or is that just a bluff? Would you watch another "Saw"? Is there even anyone left besides the puppet?
