Apparently, the universe can't handle a world in which the new "Arthur" and the new Smurfette are married.
Super-short celebrity marriages continue to be all the rage lately with news that Russell Brand and Katy Perry are splitting up after only 14 months of being husband and wife, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The "Get Him to the Greek" star filed for divorce from the pop singer in Los Angeles citing "irreconcilable differences." The report also cites sources who said that the couple had been having marital problems for some time.
"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends," Brand said in a statement to the Associated Press.
So much for Brand's denying that he and Perry were having marital problems on Ellen DeGeneres' show earlier this month. "I'm really happily married," Brand said at the time. "I’m married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge. I’m still alive."
Sigh. We can't say this news is very surprising, but we're saddened by it anyway. They were certainly one of the most entertaining and ... energetic celebrity couples out there.
Russell Brand will next be seen in "Rock of Ages," opening June 1, 2012. If there's a "Smurfs" sequel (and there probably will be), Katy Perry will probably once again provide the voice of Smurfette.
