Ready For 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' Part 5... And 6... And?

Okay, so we're all in agreement that the latest trailer for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" makes it look like a rollicking good time at the movies, but what manner of pillaging and plundering is there left to do at this stage in the swashbuckling game?

A whole lot, according to super-duper producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

The Bruck broke the news (via USA Today) at CinemaCon, the big convention for theater exhibitors going on in Las Vegas, that he's already churning out a script for a fifth Pirate jaunt if the fourth be seaworthy. This is a smart move, especially after test screenings for Disney's big summer tentpole went so swimmingly.

"The audience told us what they loved about it is that it was fresh, it was new, it was a whole new story," said Bruckheimer of the fourquel. "So that will carry over into the next one, too, to give it something fresh and different. As long as the audience embraces this one, we'll certainly try to make another one. It's really up to Johnny. He loves the character."

Whether series newcomers Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane or director Rob Marshall will return is entirely dependent on how big a demand there is for those elements once audiences get a taste for this new-and-improved revisit to the franchise. Of course, it goes without saying that there would be no franchise without Johnny Depp's beloved Captain Jack Sparrow.

Does Depp still have his sealegs for another go? We shall see, but it's not unprecedented for an actor to turn such a popular character into an institution. William Powell played Nick Charles in six "Thin Man" movies (which Depp and Marshall coincidentally want to remake) and Peter Sellers continued to appear in the "Pink Panther" series even after he was dead (yeah, seriously).
