According to the always reliable British press, Penelope Cruz — only one of the sexiest women in our known galaxy, n.b.d. — will be an oooh la la Bond girl in the upcoming 007 outing, which is scheduled to begin filming next summer.
Two notes: as you might recall, her hubby Javier Bardem played the slippery villain in last year's truly excellent "Skyfall", so there's that, and when production starts next year she will go down in history as the oldest Bond girl ever ... at the tender age of 40.
While Cruz's age probably shouldn't be anything to write home about, especially since it just proliferates a bunch of unnecessarily sexist headlines around the internet (like, um, the one seen above this article), it is still now a thing in the endlessly cataloged Bond universe. The previous record holder for oldest Bond girl was British actress Honor Blackman, who played Pussy Galore in 1962's immortal "Goldfinger" (she was 39).
"Skyfall" was the first film to gross over a billion dollars worldwide and clearly they trust Mendes' vision for the franchise ... and his leading lady selection skillz.
Perhaps the fact that Cruz is a fabulously talented actress and totally fits within the Bond girl archetype of being fierce and brilliant and sexy as hell (picture how amazing she'll look next to the dapper Daniel Craig), will be written about more often than how many cakes she blows out on her next birthday cake.
Cruz can be next* be seen in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in Pedro Almodovar's upcoming, totally wonderful "I'm So Excited."
* Since they play "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" at least once a day on Starz, she's actually probably on your TV right now doing this ...
