Kevin Smith's New NSFW Trailer Will Have You Seeing 'Red State'

Lionsgate

The mini-industry of movies, comics, podcasts, and inflammatory Tweets that is Kevin Smith has become a controversial figure in the film community of late. He's become a pro-marijuana, anti-movie critic writer-director in an extended state of pre-retirement, unafraid to speak his mind whether he's being ejected from a plane for being too fat or premiering his new film at Sundance.

That new film, Smith's take on religious backwoods horror called "Red State," was originally scheduled to be auctioned off, then the director announced he would self-distribute, and finally settled on Lionsgate releasing it on Video-On-Demand and DVD.

Luckily for Smith's rabid fanbase and the core gorehounds out there, the famed New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles will be giving the picture a one-week Academy Award-qualifying run from August 19-25. Along with that announcement comes the new VERY NSFW trailer, which pitches the film more or less the way critics described it: 1/3rd satire, 1/3rd Waco-inspired action, and 1/3rd torture porn, with plenty of FOUL LANGUAGE AND VIOLENCE.

It follows a group of three young dudes looking for some freaky three-way love on the internet and stumbling upon a group of right-wing religious extremists that may or may not resemble folks like Fred Phelps or the Branch Davidians. It stars Quentin Tarantino favorite Michael Parks, recent Oscar-winner Melissa Leo, and good ol' John Goodman as an ATF agent investigating these redneck quacks.

One thing we can tell for sure from the footage is that it will not look or feel like anything Smith has made before, and whether it works or not will be a fascinating study in a filmmaker abandoning his usual safety net to work completely out of his wheelhouse of dick jokes and "Star Wars" references.
