Kids, don't deal drugs. It's truly nothing but damn trouble.
Nicolas Winding Refn's 1996 debut, "Pusher," is a scrappy little crime drama whose familiar premise (a botched deal puts a drug pusher into a lot of debt with a drug lord) somehow seems fresh thanks to the "Drive" director's unique sense of style.
Refn is now executive producing director Luis Prieto's remake of "Pusher," which stars William Coyle as the drug dealer who learns the hard way that he may not have chosen the best career path for himself as he gets on the bad side of his supplier.
Unfortunately, the fact that Refn is directly involved in the remake looks to be the only interesting thing about this new "Pusher," if the trailer courtesy of Yahoo! Movies is any indication. You've heard this story a hundred times before -- and the fast-paced editing, "edgy" camera work, scenes set in super-cool nightclubs and images of a desperate criminal protagonist getting into so much trouble that he's got to sport two guns all seem pretty familiar, too. If director Prieto has a style as unique as his producer's, he's certainly not showing it here.
Still, if the director of "Drive" is the big boss on this project, maybe the best is yet to come -- for now, you can check out the underwhelming trailer below. "Pusher" will hit theaters sometime this year.
