Can anyone do Pixar movies as well as Pixar?
Sure, lots of studios have tried to imitate that patented Pixar magic over the last couple decades, to varying degrees of success. But now we're about to find out first hand whether anyone can really copy Pixar's style and heart, as Disney has released the first teaser trailer for their "Cars" spinoff "Planes." And Pixar pretty much has nothing to do with it.
Depending, of course, on how you look at it. "Planes," you see, was originally planned to be a direct-to-DVD release. As a result, instead of being handled by Pixar, the work was sent off to Disney's direct market folks, DisneyToon Studios.
Before you work yourself up into too much of a righteous fury, though, everything at Disney these days is overseen by Pixar head honcho John Lasseter, who directed both "Cars" films himself. So while Pixar doesn't have a direct hand in the film's production, Lasseter is still technically the mastermind behind "Planes."
Is the result going to live up to Pixar's lofty standards? Or should "Planes," which is scheduled to hit theaters on August 9, have remained a direct-to-DVD release after all? Check out the new teaser, courtesy of YouTube, and see for yourself whether "Planes" is going to fly high or crash and burn.
