First thing's first. "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones" is not "Paranormal Activity 5." That's a whole different project which, groan, is also still happening. In fact, "The Marked Ones" is not a continuation of the already fatigued franchise — at least not in the usual sense — but it's also not some bogus rip-off of the series, either. Rather, it's an early spin-off made with a Latino focus.
You got that?
Christopher Landon, who wrote installments 2 through 4 of Paramount's "Paranormal" series, wrote and directed "The Marked Ones" for the studio, a film meant to attract the franchise's Latino fan base.
"This is an off-shoot aimed at the groups who have been the biggest supporters of the property — Latino folks in Latin America — Mexico, Brazil and Argentina," explained a studio source.

As this first trailer for the pic shows, the formula is much the same with the docu-style handy cam cinematography we've come to know and
loathe love about the "Paranormal" series. And while the tone and characters are new, a connection to the previous stories surfaces indeed as the names Katie and Kristi pop up on some creepy video tape stash the new guys come across.
Then come the inexplicable bite marks, people being thrown around in mid-air and creepy loss of self-governance, and then Kristi's stepdaughter Ali (Molly Ephraim) comes along to bridge the divide and, bam, all that's left to do is insert the boo factor. These super creepy girls'll do the trick.
"Paranormal Activity: The Chosen Ones" will hit theaters on Jan. 3, 2014, with "PA 5" following along on Oct. 24.
