... with its own awesomeness.
Guillermo del Toro serves up a heapin' helpin' of giant monsters (called Kaiju, which is Japanese for "strange beast") fightin' giant robots (called Jaegers, which probably reminds you of an alcoholic beverage that its wise to stay far away from) in the first official trailer for "Pacific Rim," next summer's sci-fi action extravaganza in which the "Hellboy" director gets to play with a really big budget ... and make quite a mess while doing so (a taste of which was given by the recent viral teaser featuring San Francisco under siege by one of the beasties).
Really, how could any major metropolitan city hope to remain standing if it's anywhere in the vicinity of one of these gargantuan smackdowns? The trailer alone makes Michael Bay's "Transformers" look like an intimate chamber drama ... with the added bonus of a rousing speech by Idris Elba about "cancelling the apocalypse."
This is the movie del Toro made after Universal wouldn't give him the money to make his screen adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness." If this trailer is any indication, studios shouldn't let him do things more often. (Actually, might the Kaiju represent Universal and the Jaegers represent del Toro? Those in need of thesis topics, take note!)
Anyway, take a gander at this madness, to which there's already a damn sequel in the works. "Pacific Rim" will be unleashed upon us all on July 12, 2013.
