'Oldboy' Red Band Trailer: Nothing is More Twisted Than the Truth

People always complain about the seemingly never-ending cycle of Hollywood remakes (ourselves included). From the cringeworthy to the just plain stupid, these reboots often make us wonder if there are any original ideas left in Tinseltown.

Yahoo Movies premiered the first trailer for "Oldboy", an American version of the hugely successful Korean thriller. The film's latest poster was also released earlier this week and has already garnered a ton of buzz. Directed by Spike Lee and starring Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley and Samuel L. Jackson, "Oldboy" follows a captivating and bizarre mystery surrounding Brolin's character, advertising executive Joe Doucett.

On October 8, 1993, Doucett is suddenly kidnapped and held hostage for twenty years in solitary confinement. After he is inexplicably released, he goes on a mission to find the reason for his imprisonment and the person who orchestrated it — only to discover (shocker!) that he is still trapped in a web of violence and conspiracy. There's also some twisted romantic subplot with Elizabeth Olsen's character, a young woman who helps Doucett find his long lost daughter.

"Oldboy" is based on Park Chan-wook's 2003 film of the same name (which was itself based on the Japanese manga of the same name). The critically acclaimed Korean thriller won the Grand Prix Award at Cannes and currently holds an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was also awarded 4/4 stars by Roger Ebert and ranked #18 in Empire Magazine's 100 Best Films of World Cinema. Not too shabby.

The American version may be yet another unnecessary remake, but who knows? If the trailer is any indication, we're in for a wild ride of suspense, sex, and violence. Let's see if Spike Lee's version can live up to the hype.

"Oldboy" hits theaters October 25.
