Look, up in the sky!
Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" (2006) is, in many ways, a very lovely film. It's a moving homage to both an actor and a series that brought one of the world's all-time favorite comic book characters to life. It's full of love and respect, which goes a long way in forgiving some of its storytelling shortcomings.
But if Superman is going to any kind of relevance (or, indeed, a future) in cinema, we now need a Superman movie that doesn't feel like it's quietly touring the Christopher Reeve museum, afraid to break or — perhaps even worse — rearrange anything. We need a bold new vision and interpretation, one that takes the character in a completely different direction (but one that's still pointed up, as it were).
Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" looks like it might be just the film to bring Superman to the 21st century. The teaser doesn't offer much in terms of footage, though the tone is spot-on: majestic, melancholy, haunted, inspiring. Indeed, like the Last Son of Krypton himself, this could be a film that is destined to change everything.
