"Have you ever felt like you were meant for something more? Something bigger than you?"
That's what aspiring surfer Jay Moriarty (Jonny Weston) intones at the beginning of the new trailer, courtesy of MTV, for "Chasing Mavericks," and as you'll see in the footage they really deliver on the whole "bigger" thing.
Specifically, some super gnarly, mythologically huge waves on the Pacific Ocean that real-life surf god Moriarty conquered with the help of veteran surfer dude Frosty Hesson, played with wild-eyed charm by Gerard Butler. While Moriarty tragically died in a diving accident in 2001, Butler nearly did himself in while shooting the film in December, luckily escaping with his life, abs and Spartan shield intact.
Originally titled "Of Men and Mavericks," "Chasing Mavericks" was directed by the eclectic and often brilliant filmmaker Curtis Hanson ("L.A. Confidential," "Wonder Boys"), who has already tackled choppy water in "The River Wild" and biopics with Eminem's "8 Mile." Butler looks to be putting in one of his most winning performances in years, while newcomer Weston brings his intensity and William Katt-esque looks.
Elisabeth Shue, Leven Rambin ("The Hunger Games") and Abigail Spencer co-star in this inspirational drama which opens on Oct. 26.
