'A.C.O.D.' Trailer: Adam Scott, Adult Child of Divorce

Imagine you wake up one day and find out there's a whole stinking book devoted to breaking down you and your particular brand of weird.

In "A.C.O.D.," the first trailer for which is now in by way of Yahoo! Movies, that's exactly what happens to Adam Scott's character Carter, who thought things were going well in his life — great job, lovely girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) — until he learned that his supposed childhood therapist (Jane Lynch) was actually just conducting a study on kids whose parents were divorcing and included their little chats in her book, dubbing him "Rick."

Okay, okay, so it's not quite as damaging as, say, that blue-eyed versus brown-eyed sociological experiment from back in the day, but still. Who wants to have their business out there like that, faux moniker or not?

What's more is that her work is not done. Now, the lady's ready to circle back on her subjects and their lives as "Adult Children of Divorce" (hence the film's title), which is perfectly imperfect timing for him because the sh*t is pretty much ready to hit the fan in Carter's familial life all of a sudden, since his brother (Clark Duke) is getting hitched and his parents (Catherine O'Hara and Richard Jenkins) still can't stand each other. As Carter sees it, they "turned a 9 year marriage into a 100 year war."

There are some other casualties of the battle involved, too, including Scott's "Parks and Recreation" co-star Amy Poehler as his stepmom and Jessica Alba as Carter's secondary lover.

"A.C.O.D.," directed by Stu Zicherman and co-written by Ben Karlin, is slated to hit theaters on Oct. 4.
