New on DVD and Blu-ray: 'J. Edgar,' 'Tower Heist' and More

J. Edgar
Warner Bros.

This week: Leonardo DiCaprio plays the FBI's most enigmatic leader in "J. Edgar," Ben Stiller teams up with Eddie Murphy for "Tower Heist," a "Shrek" favorite spins off on his own in the animated "Puss in Boots," and Elizabeth Olsen escapes from a dangerous cult in "Martha Marcy May Marlene."

'J. Edgar'

J. Edgar
Warner Bros.

Box Office: $37 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 44% Rotten
Storyline: This biographical drama directed by Clint Eastwood stars Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover, the head of the FBI for nearly 50 years. Hoover was admired as much as he was reviled, but behind closed doors he held secrets that would have destroyed him if they ever came to public light. Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Judi Dench and Josh Lucas costar in this movie about the price of wanting the world to admire you.
Extras! DiCaprio and Eastwood join forces for the intimate portrait "J. Edgar: The Most Powerful Man in the World," which examines how Hoover's squeaky-clean image was at odds with his carefully concealed private life.
We Say: DiCaprio is utterly convincing as the FBI honcho and history buffs will appreciate the period details, but this ambitious 137-minute movie lacks cohesion and feels almost as long as Hoover's time in office.

'Tower Heist'

Tower Heist
Universal

Box Office: $78 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 68% Fresh
Storyline: When building manager Josh Kovacs (Ben Stiller) discovers that the penthouse tenant (Alan Alda) has plundered the staff's retirement fund, Josh enlists the help of a small-time crook (Eddie Murphy) and assembles a team of rookie thieves (Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Michael Peña and Gabourey Sidibe) to get back what is rightfully theirs in this Brett Ratner-directed comic caper.
Extras! Both the DVD and Blu-ray have two alternate endings and some funny deleted and alternate scenes.
We Say: Even though the action is somewhat Looney Tunes in terms of believability, it's a gas to watch the talented cast -- especially Murphy and Stiller -- hone their individual skills for the outrageous heist.

'Puss in Boots'

Puss in Boots DVD
DreamWorks

Box Office: $149 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 83% Fresh
Storyline: This animated spinoff prequel to the "Shrek" movies has Puss (Antonia Banderas) teaming up with Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) to go after two murderous outlaws in possession of magical beans that, according to legend, lead to a vast fortune.
Extras! "The Cat's Meow" is a six-part interactive featurette that is a purr-fect way to go behind the scenes. The movie is also available on Blu-ray 3-D if you want to take it to the next dimension.
We Say: We're not sure how many lives Puss has on-screen, but this frisky adventure will put a grin on the faces of "Shrek" fans longing for more.

'Martha Marcy May Marlene'

Martha Marcy May Marlene DVD
20th Century Fox

Rotten Tomatoes: 90% Fresh
Storyline: The eponymous character (Elizabeth Olsen) escapes from an abusive cult in the Catskill Mountains and tries to reclaim a normal life with her family in this psychological thriller.
Extras! The Blu-ray's "Psyche of a Cult" offers some insight into how these groups manipulate young minds.
We Say: The haunting performance by Olsen might also have you looking over your shoulder to see if someone is watching your every move.
