'Twilight,' 'Hunger Games' Share Popcorn at MTV Movie Awards

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1
Summit

The biggest party of the year took place last night and the biggest winner at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards was "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -Part 1" which beat out fan favorites "The Hunger Games" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" to take home the award for Movie of the Year.

As many predicted, "The Hunger Games" also had a strong showing, winning Best Female Performance for Jennifer Lawrence's take on Katniss Everdeen, Best Male Performance for Josh Hutcherson's Peeta Mellark and Best Fight for the duo's tangle with Alexander Ludwig's malevolent Cato. "The Hunger Games" co-star Elizabeth Banks, meanwhile, won Best On-Screen Transformation for her turn as the flamboyant Effie Trinket.

Despite the dominance of "Hunger Games" in the individual categories, "Twilight" managed to steal one other coveted award, as Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson won for Best Kiss. Stewart, who was forced to accept the award alone since Pattinson wasn't able to attend, had the crowd abuzz after she pretended to make out with herself on stage. Which we're pretty sure is how "Fifty Shades of Grey" got started.

And "Harry Potter" went out in style, winning the Best Hero award as well as Best Cast for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2." Emma Watson, who was on hand to promote her new movie "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," accepted the award on behalf of the "over 200" cast members who worked on the epic series.

The big films didn't take home all the awards, though, as Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants") beat out "The Hunger Games" star Liam Hemsworth for Breakthrough Performance. And in one of the least likely — but totally awesome — career makeovers of all time, Jennifer Aniston took home the award for Best On-Screen Dirtbag for her gonzo performance in last summer's raunchy comedy "Horrible Bosses."

Johnny Depp was also on hand to receive the MTV Generation Award, which is given to stars whose body of work embodies the spirit of the MTV Movie Awards. Depp was presented the award by Aerosmith before being feted with a special performance by The Black Keys, with Depp himself on guitar. The always awesome Emma Stone, meanwhile, took home the first ever MTV Trailblazer Award and delivered a poignant acceptance speech.

As always, the MTV Movie Awards were ground zero for the coolest celebrities and the hottest new films. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman and an emotional Christian Bale were on hand to introduce a sneak peek of "The Dark Knight Rises," for instance, while "Snow White and the Huntsman's" Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth also made an appearance. And fans were especially wowed by Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello's impromptu striptease in support of "Magic Mike."

Host Russell Brand opened the show with an edgy and slightly out of breath monologue that referenced everything from his own failed marriage to Katy Perry to Michael Fassbender's genitals to the possibility of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West filming a sex tape. Luckily, he had a fallback plan if the crowd began to get antsy, shouting "Twilight! Hunger Games!" at random for guaranteed applause. Smart man.
