Why 'The Mortal Instruments' Movie Gave Its Author the Weeps

"The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" hits theaters in just over a week, and series author Cassandra Clare has fessed up to getting pretty darn emotional about all the hubbub in adapting her romantical-slash-supernatural story. In fact, at last night's big splashy L.A. premiere for the film she admitted to being absolutely reduced to tears when visiting the set.

But before you say "aw" and do the head tilt (you know you were on your way there), consider this: It was not the on-screen culmination of the epic love of her swoony Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower) and l'artiste Clary Fray (Lily Collins) characters on-screen or the sturdily attentive loyalty of her fanbase sticking through all the film's pre-production hiccups and waiting adoringly at the finish line that got her in a teary tizzy. Nope. It was the props.

Of all things that could make a source material author have to whip out a hankie, it was the selection of props which really tickled Clare's sappy bone on the "Mortal Instruments" set. Just laying finger on what the crew had put together for her gang of stele and whip-wielding shadowhunters even left her blithering enough to scare the filmmakers.

"Harald [Zwart, director] came over and he was like, 'What's wrong? Is it bad? Do you want us to redo it? You're crying!" she recalled to The Hollywood Reporter. But those were tears of joy, you see, so it was all gravy.

"The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" hits theaters on Aug. 21. Production on the second installment of the series, "The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes" is expected to begin this fall.
