Morgan Freeman Gets Sucked Into 'Oblivion'

Although he lent that famous narration ability of his to 2005's "War of the Worlds," Morgan Freeman has yet to share the screen with Tom Cruise … until now.

According to Deadline, the man who found that hope springs eternal in "The Shawshank Redemption" will now face "Oblivion," the Cruisinator's next big sci-fi vehicle for Universal previously known as "Horizons" (although prior to that was known as "Oblivion").

The plot concerns "the last man on a post-apocalyptic and nearly uninhabitable Earth, who stays behind to repair ships that hunt down and blast a virulent alien species."

No word yet on who Freeman will play or if a computer-generated version of Jessica Tandy will be chauffeured through the wasteland in some kind of nitro-powered vehicle.

"Oblivion" is the brainchild of "Tron: Legacy" director Joseph Kosinski, who originated the concept for this dystopic opus as a graphic novel, but has now had several high-profile screenwriters take a crack at the script. Those plunging the depths of "Oblivion" include Academy Award-winning "Departed" scribe William Monahan and "Little Miss Sunshine" Oscar-winner Michael Arndt, who also did some work on Cruise's "Rock of Ages."

Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough also star in this "Mad Max"-esque futuristic scavenger story, which is intended to drop on July 19, 2013.
