This just in: U.N. officials announced today that they are going to go ahead and rename our planet "Melissa McCarthy's Earth," because it's becoming increasingly obvious to everyone that this is her world and the rest of us are just living in it.
The latest proof that the breakout star of "Bridesmaids" is on a clear path of world domination? According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema has just pre-emptively snatched up the rights to the new comedy "Tammy," which McCarthy will co-produce from a script she co-wrote. Plus, she will likely star in it to boot.
Let us be the first to issue a warm welcome to our new benevolent overlord.
The acquisition of "Tammy" is just the most recent career highlight for McCarthy, who has been ascending like a rocket of glorious justice ever since "Bridesmaids" went box office A-bomb back in May; since then, the star of the hit TV sitcom "Mike & Molly" has hosted "Saturday Night Live" to glowing reviews and been attached to seeming every comedy in Hollywood, from her own untitled project about a woman who steals the Stanley Cup to cheer up her husband to the Jason Bateman vehicle "Identity Thief" to the latest Judd Apatow ensemble.
"Tammy," though, may be the brightest feather in her increasingly adorned cap, as the project -- about a woman who is laid off and discovers her husband is having an affair, leading her to embark on a road trip with her elderly, alcoholic mother -- is near and dear to her heart.
"It's about these two women who are not where they thought they would be, and then they kind of band together," McCarthy told The Hollywood Reporter of the project last month. "It's just my perfect tone. It’s so funny, and it also kind of breaks my heart."
We have a feeling her heart will mend, though. After all, becoming an international A-list superstar can cure a lot of ills.
