Mel Gibson Joining 'The Expendables 3' Cast? Sly's Twitter Hints Maybe

Is Mel Gibson the latest smoldering gent to land a role in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming blow-em-up flick "The Expendables 3?"

Maybe so ... if you can believe the wonderful world of celebrities on Twitter.

The famed "Rocky" actor and all around wiiise guy tweeted this not-so-cryptic message to his account earlier this week, declaring "Max Max vs Barney Ross....."

Dun-dun-dunnnnnn!!

Don't quite get it? Well, for those post-millennial teeny-boppers (kids these days) who don't know about Gibson's career pre-"Signs" — or, erm his uberpublicicized personal issues — "Max Max" is the 1979 film that originally catapulted Gibson to mega-stardom way back when. Gibson played Max Rockatansky, a leather-bound biker who got into so much trouble, his antics spanned two sequels ... three, if you include Tom Hardy's stab at the role.

And Barney Ross just so happens to be Stallone's muscle-bound alter-ego in "The Expendables" films. Using our superior basic logic skills, Stallone pinning his "Expendables" character against Mad Max means Gibson is joining the famed team of Hollywood badasses (also including Bruce Willis, Jason Statham and Chuck Norris alongside rumored newcomers to the Dr. Pepper Zero-esque franchise, Steven Seagal and maybe-maybe not Nicholas Cage). Possibly.

This has been a rumor for quite some time now, so Stallone's little tweet treat could be that confirmation we've been waiting on with such bated breath ... Or, who knows, this all really could be Stallone's fantasy "Celebrity Death Match" (remember THAT gem?).

Indiewire reports Stallone first approached Gibson to direct "The Expendables 3," but the gig ultimately went to Patrick Hughes ("Red Hill"). The allure of elbow grease, bandannas and combat boots may have caused Gibson to play a little movie musical chairs and jump in front of the camera (again, all speculation at this time).

If Mr. Gibson does join the rowdy bunch, he will be part of a brute force which also (yes, there are even more brauny beaus on the call sheet) Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes and Mickey Rourke. So. Much. Manliness.

Gibson's latest film "Machete Kills" is slated for an Oct. 4 release, while you can expect to see "The Expendables 3" in Aug. 2014.
