The race to find a visionary helmer to wrangle "Star Wars Episode VII" together for a summer 2015 release is getting narrower by the day, with only a few prominent names left standing, including Jon Favreau and Matthew Vaughn.
In fact, the latter's chances just shot up tenfold when Vaughn's longtime collaborator Jason Flemyng, who most recently played red-skinned Azazel in "X-Men: First Class," had his face turned red again when HeyUGuys interviewed him outside the UK premiere of "Seven Psychopaths" and he seemed to all-but confirm it.
What's interesting here, aside from doing a killer C-3PO impression, is Flemyng came around to the "Episode VII" question as if Vaughn's involvement was a done deal. Guess he doesn't keep up with the internet much…
"Me and Matt have done nine films together," he said, "So I'm sure I'll get the call for 'Star Wars' but I'm sure it's going to be literally, 'Flemyng, no, I know on paper it doesn't look like much, but I promise you it's essential to the part.' So we'll see what happens with that."
When the reporter tried to confirm Vaughn's involvement, Flemyng gave a serious egg-on-face expression like he just let a little too much slip, and then slyly said, "Yeah, he's interested, bar the deal."
We don't know what kind of behind-the-scenes shenanigans are going on, most likely with directors whipping up crazy pitch reels and nothing short of wearing their hair in Leia-style buns in order to get the gig. As we reported last week, Vaughn's "First Class" screenwriter Simon Kinberg was brought on board to co-write the 8th and 9th Episodes with Lawrence Kasdan, but as Doris Day sang in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (hey, that's you, Jason Flemyng!), "Que Sera Sera."
