Oscar-winning director Terrence Malick works in mysterious ways. It's pretty much an established fact; after all, we're talking about a guy who once went more than two full decades between movies and who frequently keeps his new projects under such tight security that even the actors he's working with don't always know the plot of their own movie.
So the fact that Malick suddenly showed up at the Austin City Limits music festival over the weekend with Christian Bale and a camera crew in tow has to mean something. But what?
Of course, Malick lives in Austin, Texas, where the music festival in question took place. But as The Film Stage is reporting, this seems to be a little more than Malick and friends jamming to Coldplay.
For example, usually when people go to a concert, they don't have Christian Bale with them, especially since Bale is pretty busy these days filming "The Dark Knight Rises." Plus, there's the fact that Malick had a whole camera crew with him, filming Bale as he did unusual things like creep up on stage with the band and stare morosely at the uncaring sky. Plus, Bale wasn't the only thespian in tow, as actress Haley Bennett ("Marley & Me") was also on hand, joining Bale on camera for occasional vignettes.
All of which adds up to the obvious conclusion that Malick must be filming a movie of some kind starring Bale and Bennet. Malick being Malick, though, there's no word on what it's about, who else is in it, when it will be in theaters or whether, in fact, the entire episode might just be a collective fever dream or perhaps an elaborate stunt for "Punk'd."
It's a head-scratcher, but hey, look on the bright side: At least you won't have to spend the next two years dodging spoiler tags.
