The last big holdout for "The Mortal Instruments" casting has finally been announced!
Alec Lightwood — that soft-spoken Nephilim whose only real fears are spiders and lost love — will be portrayed by "Gossip Girl" star (and frequenter of the horror genre) Kevin Zegers, Just Jared has now confirmed.
Alec, of course, is the older brother of Isabelle Lightwood (who'll be portrayed by Jemima West) in Cassandra Clare's novel "City of Bones," and the character has an eye for his adoptive brother Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower). So, he's not exactly a big fan of the girl who comes into the picture in the story, Clary Fray (Lily Collins).
It's one of the more complicated characters in the book series, so perhaps that's been the cause of delay in announcing the castmate associated with the role.
As Cassandra Clare explained on her blog, "Alec is a huge number of people’s favorite character: I know there’s a huge level of anxiety that he be the gorgeous, sexy, strong guy you know from the books. The casting folks have done a fantastic job so far so all I can say is cross your fingers, quietly repeat 'Alec will be a beautiful sexy blue-eyed BAMF' and lo, perhaps it will come to be!"
Indeed, physically, Kevin Zegers matches the description for Alec, which include a pair of steely blue eyes, a dark head of hair and a wiry build!
Zegers rounds out the cast, which also includes Robert Sheehan, Kevin Durand, Robert Maillet, Lena Headey, Jared Harris, and Godfrey Gao, and shooting is expected to begin in less than a month!
