Before They Were Famous: Jude Law in '$hopping'

Jude Law in $hopping
Severin Films

It was 1994, and a gifted young Brit named Jude Law was leaving his stage and television conquests behind him for a stab at the silver screen. And it was the perfect moment.

The machismo trends of the '80s were dying down (Stallone, Schwarzenegger, etc.) and audiences seemed ready again to embrace a star whose chief virtue wasn't bench pressing 400 pounds. But, of course, Jude had no way of knowing he'd one day conquer Hollywood and perhaps even play a robot prostitute opposite a talking teddy bear (that was just a confusing premonition he had from time to time).

At that moment, Law was just another struggling thespian with a sparkle in his eye and a face chiseled out of... whatever model's faces are chiseled out of…

Then he scored the leading role in "$hopping." The gritty action flick took place in the near future -- and it's not a nice future: wild, cherub-faced teens have taken to the streets in stolen automobiles! The reason: to crash those hot wheels through shop windows and loot the boutique's shiny merchandise.

Billy (Law) along with his girlfriend, Jo (future wife Sadie Frost) can't get enough of this hardcore window shopping, even though Billy's fresh out of the big house and in danger of going back in forever (man, if there's one guy who wouldn't make it in prison...).

Now, if you haven't heard of "$hopping," maybe it's because this low-budget indie just couldn't compete with the home-spun morality tales of 1994's "Pulp Fiction," or the brutal scenes of murder and sodomy in "Forrest Gump" (or do we have those backwards?). Or maybe the world just wasn't ready for the use of a dollar sign not followed by numbers -- it's just too crazy. Well, now's your chance to answer these questions for yourselves. "$hopping" comes to DVD and Blu-ray, for the first time ever, Feb.1.
